Fast spinning, easily readable, external hard drive solution.

I was looking for a thunderbolt option for my new (late) 2013 27" iMac. I have 256GB of Flash storage, but I don't trust SSD to hold important data when it could be easily lost if the drive failed. Spinning disk drives, like the G-RAID, could still potentially have data saved off the platters.

My 1st project used the 8TB G-RAID drive as an on-location, portable, video editing drive. Using the thunderbolt cable (supplied), the offloading, editing and overall speed of the drive were nothing short of FAST!! Very glad I didn't listen to reviews saying Thunderbolt wasn't worth the extra expense. Don't listen to them...it is noticeably effective.

It does stop spinning every once and while if not in use, but will re-spin when I access finder or any files off the drive. It only takes about 5 seconds to get back up and running. The motor is slightly noticeable, but can easily tuned out when focusing on work. I have it 2 feet from my computer.

The supplied Thunderbolt cable is short, but I spent the extra $30 for the longer version just to have the option in the field. Everything you need comes in the box. Its beautifully made and compliments the iMac well. In the future, I will buy more of these and daisy chain.

I use the drive for back-up -- mostly photo and video files. The write speed over thunderbolt is impressive. This is the loudest running drive in my collection. I run it sitting on my desk top, but will likely get a longer firewire cable so I can move it under my desk.

Comments about G-Technology 8TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array with Thunderbolt:

I've always had good success with G- Tech products and it appears as if the 8 TB G-RAID is no exception. Working with a MAC - it's basically plug and play. It's fast - very fast - with Thunderbolt - and as of this moment in time - seamless, reliable, and durable. I'm very satisfied with it.

I own the 4TB version at work, but this seems a bit more noisy. Really it's not terribly loud, but it definitely makes some noise when compared to the relative silence of my iMac.

I bought a few of the 4TB versions of this raid last year and ran out of space and I was going to purchase another 4TB but after comparing the prices it was a no brainer going with the 8TB G-raid. I have no complaints, the throughput is amazing. When I purchased the 4TB the thunderbolt cable wasn't included and now the Thunderbolt cable IS INCLUDED. Can't beat $0.08/GB at thunderbolt speeds.

Worked perfectly right out if the box on my new Mac Pro.

Loud when backing up, but silent when not.

Light on front is to darn bright! I put a sticker on it.

The switch is on the back! Really??? Why? Annoying!!!

Overall I'm satisfied and would buy it again. It is very fast! Seems instant on Thunderbolt with Mac Pro.

I use it mainly to edit videos in Final Cut Pro X via my iMac and it flies!

Before this drive I had another G-Drive 4TB drive that connected via USB 3 and it was good too but I have to say this is by far the best external drive I've ever owned.

                      This is my 3rd G-Technology drive. Had one other G-Raid 6(non-Thunderbolt) and a G-Drive 3.
                      This Thunderbolt G-Raid is FAST.
Thunderbolt plus Raid 0 works extremely well together.
I used the Blackmagic disk speed test and it averages at 320MB/s write and 330MB/s read. This is beneficial to me as i work mainly in Video editing.
This is a speed i was never able to achieve before. My internal drive and my old G-raid(limited to FW800) was only able to get to 90MB/s

One thing to keep note is I heard with Raid 0, there is no/low chance of data recovery.

Video editing at Thunderbolt speed is a noticeable improvement. Not an inexpensive drive, but I've had good luck with G-Tech before so I'm hoping this drive will prove just as reliable.

I use this drive for amateur video editing on FCPX. I'm moving up from a G-Speed Q on FW 800 (because my 2011 iMac doesn't have an eSATA port) and this is a vast improvement. I haven't done any formal tests but just watching Activity Monitor I'm getting about a 3-4x the speed bump. This new drive is also much quieter than my old drive. My only one complaint is the light in the front is bright.
