The Axis Communications Q1604 Day/Night Indoor Network Camera is equipped with a 1/3" RGB CMOS sensor, and delivers clear and crisp images in a 1 MP/HDTV 720p resolution. Featuring progressive scan technology, rest assured that you will get smooth image capture for scenes with fast moving objects. For video compression, this network camera transmits multiple streams in H.264 and MJPEG video formats at either full frame rates or individually optimized for different quality needs and bandwidth constraints. Defined by its Day/Night ICR (infrared cut filter removal) function, the network camera switches between color and B&W as per changes in ambient lighting, ensuring accurate color reproduction in daylight and enhanced B&W images at night.

With the Remote Back Focus function, you can easily fine tune the focus from a computer. Focus Assistant enables you to set the focus, and a flashing green LED indicates that the image is in focus. A unique feature of this camera is its pixel counter function, which calculates the number of pixels contained in a given part of the image, for example a person's face. This is an important feature for satisfying certain jurisdictions requiring proof of resolution before an image can be submitted for evidence.

Intelligent video capabilities include video motion detection, audio detection, and active tampering alarm. The camera supports an open API (Application Programming Interface) for software integration, including the ONVIF specification for interoperability between network video products. Installation is made easy with Power over Ethernet (PoE, IEEE 802.3af), which eliminates the need for power cables. Additionally, it has an SD slot for on-board storage of the recorded footage.

Excellent Image Quality
  • 1/3" RGB CMOS sensor along with 2.8 - 8mm varifocal DC-iris lens, delivers clear and crisp images in a 1 MP/HDTV 720p resolution
  • Progressive scan technology delivers blur free images at 30 fps
  • Wide Dynamic Range technology with dynamic capture enables homogeneous images, without too dark or too bright parts
  • Backlight compensation adjusts video gain to correct the exposure when the object is in front of a bright light source
  • White balance feature adjusts the red, green, and blue colors taking a standard white reference to get clear images
  • Day & Night ICR Function: Switches between color and B&W as per changes in ambient lighting, ensuring accurate color reproduction in daylight and enhanced B&W images at night
Remote Back Focus and Pixel Counter
  • Focus Assistant enables you to set the focus; flashing green LED indicates that the image is in focus
  • Remote Back Focus function allows you to easily fine-tune the focus from a computer
  • Helps the installer ensure the pixel resolution of an object meets the regulatory or specific customer requirements
Optimized Use of Bandwidth and Storage
  • Multiple H.264 and MPEG streams can be provided simultaneously either in full frame rate or individually optimized for different quality needs and bandwidth constraints
  • SD/SDHC card slot for on-board storage for recording images or small video clips
Intelligent Features
  • Video motion detection feature compares the current frame with a pre-determined standard frame to accurately trigger an alarm if motion is detected
  • API (Application Program Interface) supports an open API for software integration, including the ONVIF specification and the VAPIX and Axis Camera Application Platform from Axis Communications
  • Includes features such as privacy masking, text and image overlay, exposure control, and mirroring of images
  • Text and Image Overlay: A static image superimposed on video image can be used to provide extra information or for masking part of video image
2-Way Audio
  • Supports two-way communication with visitors or potential intruders from the operator's base station using a microphone and speaker
  • Password Protection restricts access to unauthorized persons
  • IP Filtering restricts access to one or more user groups; user groups can be created with an IP address range being defined for each group
  • Digest Authentication uses a system where the network server authenticates a user request through a domain controller and then grants access to authorized users only
  • User Access Log consists of those who accessed the images on the network
  • HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol over SSL) protects streaming data transmission across the network
Power over Ethernet
  • Built-in 802.3af compliant PoE allows the camera to receive power directly from its network interface, making installation possible without the need for additional wiring and cables

Comments about Axis Communications Q1604 Day/Night Indoor Network Camera:

PROS: Perfect visibility of static objects outside at night; improved detail on moving ones at night with limited artificial light; great for SD card recording. Has dark magnesium body - not standing out (good). CONS: When continuously connected to browser (IE) or Ipad app (on 100 Mbp/s PoE line) causes image being out of sync (flickering after >30 min) - reconnecting fixes it temporally. I doubt it is because of not using a gigabyte connection - might be some stability issue. There is also described (in other review) artifact when strong light is seen at night. I see sodium lamp (yellowish light) reflection on car bodies as pink 'walking' cloud which changes shape and location slightly - it cycles within 10-15 seconds: fading in and out. Also SD card recorded image seams to have ca. 80-100 lines at the bottom of the recording blurred: intermittent problem (not on every recording). SD card used is the 90 MB/s 32GB brand name card. All cons are really minor - but might be important when using footage in a court etc. Also could not see Live View in browser when a custom program (trip line detection demo) was running - I wonder if LPR (much complex program) would run on it. OTHER: Runs rather hot even on cold days behind a window and in a shade of upper window frame outlooking parking lot. I would not trust it into enclosure at high summer temperatures. It is also known that heat creates noise in image. I would like that cam to capture bursts of still images - that is either obscured or non-existent option. Overall satisfied with excellent day time shutter speed. When streaming SD card recording from this camera over 100 MBps line - it plays it at 1/2-1/3 speed rate, which is caused (I assume) by the low throughput of my switch - but also interesting analytical option. Unfortunately there is no FAST FORWARD or adaptive NORMAL playback (live re-compression of recorded video) - that would be very welcome improvement. I wonder how this line of cams (e.g. Q1602) compares to Ikegami analog B&W camera at TV resolution in terms of shutter speed at night (sharpness of moving objects).
