I bought this because I'd always liked the effect I'd seen from fisheye lenses, and wanted one in my arsenal. I was excited to try it out, and for the most part, am not disappointed. On a DX crop camera, the frame is filled -- there is no annoying outer circle like I've experienced on some faux-fisheye modifiers. With the Nikon Confirm Chip, I can set the camera on A or M or P, and let it go. By moving my position up or down, I can increase the arc, concave or convex, for more or less distortion - or by keeping the horizon level, I get super wide field of vision with a minimum of distortion.

However, although the Auto-Exposure is supposed to work with this chip, it doesn't seem to. I can target a landscape scene, or a close up, and the focus does not change (at least the auto-focus motor does not kick in). Being a fisheye, manual focusing is very difficult on things far away. I leave the aperture ring at f/22 as instructed, and the auto-exposure works just fine-- but the focus is not always very sharp, particularly if I include a close-up object in the frame.

The other worry I have is that attaching it is VERY tight -- frighteningly so. It takes a bit of muscle to attach it and detach it. This makes me a bit nervous.

But . . . for the most part, I'm happy with it. For the price, which is half or less of a name-brand fisheye, it is still more than I expected. It's a fun little lens offering tons of creative potential.

Great cost-benefit. This is a solid lenses, well built, what is good when you make outdoor shots and cannot treat your lenses as a baby.

The results are as you expect of a fisheye. It does have 180º view, very distorted images. And this lenses haver low/none color aberration.

The only problem is to focus. Fisheyes are pretty hard to focus, because on the viewfinder everything looks small and in the same focus distance. "But what about the focus confirm chip?". Unfortunately, on my Nikon D7000 it doesn't work very well; it may have worked in 10% of the cases...

I don't regret of buying it, tough! As i said, the cost-benefit is great; but i would have bought Nikkon`s 10.5mm AF if i had the money.

Comments about Samyang 8mm Ultra Wide Angle f/3.5 Fisheye Lens for Nikon w/Focus Confirm Chip:

Nice high quality glass. Optical performance is excellent. DOF is huge.Only thing need to complain is the distant number from focus ring is off. I focus my lens at the target 1.5ft away using live view. Once I acquire the sharpest focus, I check the printed distance on the focus ring, which is about 2.5ft. So, the offset is about 1ft on the focus ring. This is a minor issue to me. So I give 4 stars to this lens.

Comments about Samyang 8mm Ultra Wide Angle f/3.5 Fisheye Lens for Nikon w/Focus Confirm Chip:

Very good optics, sharp across the field. Near-stereoscopic projection is less exaggerated than other fisheyes. Good flare characteristics.

Solidly built metal construction with smooth focusing, BUT focusing ring has been set wrong on both I have bought, with best infinity focus at about five feet. This can be corrected using a small screwdriver to loosen three small setscrews under the rubber on the ring.

Only other negative is a very poor lens cap which allows dust in. A friction cap would be a much better choice.

Overall an incredible lens at a great price.

For non professional users spending more than $600 for fisheye lens doesn't worth it.On my Nikon D60 confirm chip works properly for aperture, buti t doesn't work for AF.The lens is little dark in inside pics, but it's good in outside pics. It's a funny lens !

Comments about Samyang 8mm Ultra Wide Angle f/3.5 Fisheye Lens for Nikon w/Focus Confirm Chip:

This lens has a very good performance to price ratio. Fisheye lenses have very limited use so paying $600+ is not an option for many enthusiasts like myself. Samyang is filling this spot with a lens thatperforms really nice optically.

Focus confirm is however inconsistent. I'm not sure why my Nikon D300 has problem with this lens evenwhen wide open at f3.5. Anyway this is an issue whic can be worked areound with a fisheye lens since you have to actually focus for anything at 3 meters or less. Considering the price and optical performace of this lens this is comething I can live with and I'm glad I got this lens.

Still learning how to use it through trial and error, but the images so far have been wonderful.

I love this lens! I have gotten back into photography this summer and I was looking for a wide angle that slightly provided that rounded edges effect as opposed to the complete circle. This lens is perfect, it gives just enough distortion. Its so fun to use. The only thing is that it was hard to snap onto my camera. I felt like I was doing something wrong but I guess that is just the way the lens is.
