Considering the price, this lens is a real gem in my opinion. This is the second example of this 14 mm w/a lens from the Korean producer, the previous one was sold under the Rokinon brand, yet those lenses are identical. Both my lenses have been used on full frame DSLR cameras, the 5D MkII an now 5D MkIII, and my evaluation is purely based on its properties when used on FF cameras. Those who like w/a lenses and the effect they can give must like this lens. One has to be aware that this lens does not autofocus, nor does it communicate with the camera in any other way. Both focusing and setting the aperture have to be done manually, the latter by turning an aperture setting ring on the lens.. The most obvious camera setting is thus AV, and the camera will set the correct exposure according to the aperture setting. Everything is manual, and for the inexperienced, this can bebe a problem. However, getting everything in focus when shooting landscape in bright light is almost a no brainer; opting for f/11 and a focus distance of 2 meters brings everything in focus from 0,8 meters to infinity. Focusing on near subjects with the lens wide open can be tricky through the viewfinder, and is best done using Live view, if the camera has got that option. This lens is sharp from corner to corner, and C/A is no more apparent than on more expensive lenses. W/A or perspective distortion is as should be expected with a lens that wide. A "trademark" for this lens is a rather nasty phenomenon, "moustache distortion", not so much a problem in landscape photography, but a real party spoiler when shooting buildings and structures. This effect can be overcome when processing raw files in PS or LR by using a special lens correction profile for this lens. The profile does not work for cameras with APC sensors.Color rendition is generally good, the lens has its own character in this respect, and it takes a bit of practice in PPS to get the most out of it.Having gone through the initial learning curve, this lens is a real joy to use, and opens some exciting opportunities for creative photography. It will deliver fine results when in hands of a photographer that really knows how to work with w/a lenses, and who can master the old trade of operating a fully manual lens.

      Wide advantage

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

Sharp, simple and affordable. Minor lens distortion that can easily be adjusted in post. Giving non landscape or architecture specific photographers the advantage of being able to get those wide angle shots.

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

There are three reasons why I love this lens: Cheap, wide and sharp! :) If you want a fast and super wide lens you should definitely get this piece of glass. Although the vignetting and distortion is massive, this lens is great. I would have given it 5 stars if the distortion wasn't that noticeable.

      Pretty good

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

Overall a pretty good lens. It's good for night photography. I tried to use it in the day time when I went up to Mt Rainer and my pictures were blown out and I couldn't seem to get a good exposure from it during the day. I'm not sure what that was about. Also seemed to have a hard time getting it focused during the day. At night it's easy bc you can put it on infinity. I took some really nice pictures of the Milky Way and they came out really good! For what you're paying it's a nice little lens.

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

I tried four copies of htis lens (2 Sony E-mount, 2 Canon mount). One had a badly decentered lens producing softness along the entire left edge. The other three were more symmetric but all very soft in the corners on an A7R, even when stopped down. I get much better resutls on the same camera using a Nikon 14-24mm (at 14mm).

I got this lense from B&H today and I took it out on a mission to start experimenting, and I am stoked on it. It has a manual aperture ring as well as a manual focus ring so that will take some getting used to, but it feels like the capability of this camera is phenomenal.

As of yet, I would reccomend this camera to anybody wanting to push their photography to the next level.

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

I use this on a Canon 60d and I needed something wide to use on a video stabilizer. On a crop sensor there is very little distortion, but on a 6D it was almost borderline fisheye but it still gave the photos and video a very unique look. When I have it on my stabilizer I set it to f/22 to keep things in focus. If i'm shooting photos Its almost necessary to use live view and magnify in to make sure the focus is set right. Focus ring is very smooth though so I really like it. Its not the perfect lens but for the price that its at compared to the canon, its worth getting!

I bought this lens for astrophotography but have found it excellent for landscapes too. While there is some lens distortion, I have found that the clarity is at least as good as my Sigma 10-20mm zoom and much faster. You need to pay close attention to your histogram when using this lens; it tends to confuse the in-camera metering in my 50D.
While I do wish that this lens was autofocus, you really can't beat the lens being in this price range.

I use this lens on a full frame DSLR for landscape and astro-photography. The lens really does have edge to edge sharpness; some chromatic aberration but is taken care of with software and a lens profile downloaded from Adobe. Sure, auto focus would be ideal for landscapes but considering the option of purchasing Canon's L series auto focus lens at this focal length--for literally six times the price--the SamYang is an absolute bargain.

using this with my 5D and my BMPCC and its great for both - love the super wide on the 5D - there is some image distortion obviously at this wide of a lens - but I really like the look it gives. And its pretty sharp. Definitely a great value - the aperture has clicks - which is not ideal for video but not a big deal. Also it is a 5 or 6 blade aperture (if you care about that) - fun to play with for a different look on the full frame

Only con is the minimum focal distance isnt very close - not really a big deal on the full frame - but I would like to be able to focus closer on a crop sensor - but again at this price point it isnt going to be your only lens

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

This lens blows away the top of the line canon optics when it comes to image quality. I purchased it mainly for low light, nighttime and astrophotography applications. It doesn't exhibit coma when used wide-open and controls aberrations far better than the most expensive L-series glass. No regrets on this purchase. The only reason for 4 stars is that doesn't have electronics to record distance and f-stop, necessitating you add that with an exif editor. But for actual shooting under nighttime circumstances you don't need a lens with auto focus, and I'm almost always shooting wide-open, so no need to elctronically set apertures. So long as you get a good copy of this lens, you can't do wrong with it. Produces extremely sharp images for a super-wide/fish-eye lens.

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

This is a great lens! I use it for indoor videography and photography with a Canon 5d Mark iii.

If you need a great lens for real estate, or other indoor shots, this is a great one that won't break your budget.

There is some darkening of the corners. This has been especially noticeable on some of my long exposure night shots. However, even with this small issue, I would recommend this lens!

Will you improve your skills in image composition with a real teacher-lens? Well, if you don't have a billionaire budget, THIS is your choice. Tick and sharp images, good colors, CA isn't really an issue, acceptably controlled distorsions, really a joy to play whith this glass!! Right, no AF, but at his focal length...

I am very happy with the lens so far and I mainly use it for landscape and night sky pictures. Therefore for me the missing automatic focus is not important. If you want to see a nice video of the lens I liked this one but, there are a lot.I like the sharpness of the lens and for the wide angle it has not a lot distortions. The build quality seems to be very good and the lens itself is not plastic.Summary:Nice sharp wide angle lens for landscape and night sky pictures for not a lot of money. Bargain lens.

I own 2 Canon L lens' a 24 - 105f4 and the 70 -200f4 They are awesome but this little Samyang is so neat I am really glad I got it. Seems built great , gives me that other choice for something different. On my 1D Mark IV with a crop factor of 1.3 this lens shoots at more like 17mm,

I needed a low price superwide and after seeing this here I thought I'd read a little deeper. Looking at DxO this lens was better then the Canon and Nikon with the only lens scoring better was the new Zeiss 15mm. After shooting with it I have to say it's quite nice, very sharp, much sharper then the14mm Tamron. It does have a good amount of distortion that is fixable in post, but know you will have to fix it if you are shooting for an architect or interior designer. Travel and documentary photography is OK. For the money you can't beat it.

For somebody who has a litle experiense with manual focus, this lens is realy wonderful for his price.
It's realy crisp and compared with efs 18-55 has nothing to envy. I look forward to use it in some astronomy photos.
The only disadvantage is that it has'nt elecronic contact for focus beep. I think that it will helps a litle more.
