I used mirror reflex lens 20 years ago with film because of their size and wieght. They are a lens you have to know how to use. I ordered a vivitar 500mm f6.3 and it was horrable. BHphoto did a switch for this Samyang (which came as an ProOptic --Samyang make the same lens for Bower, phoenix, etc). I have used it for several birding outing and it has proved to be a very good lens.
I attached a couple of images to show this a very capable lens. the first shot was taken of a bird house from about 50 feet on a tripod. The second is our dog from about 80 feet on a sunny day hand held.
For a 500mm lens I can throw in the backpack for hiking and not have to worry about too much weight and it didn't break the bank I have no complaints.

Using this lens without a tripod is nearly impossible. Shutter speed really needs to be jacked up. Best used in full daylight to compensate for the fixed aperture. Although it is very lightweight for it's focal length, a tripod collar would make it easier to handle. On a small camera, like the sony nex 6, it is just heavy enough to make we worry about damaging the camera when it is on a tripod.

Comments about 500mm f/6.3 Mirror Lens (Black):

I've had the Nikkor F5 and F8 mirror lenses ... very useable back in the day. But THIS lenses focus is way too short, ie. you can barely move it to make a change ... so that even on a tripod, using the magnifier, it very difficult to achieve proper focus.

Nice lens for the price, like the donut bokeh. Take nice picture. Handheld with this lens is hard, but with pratice you take great photo, search on the net, need tripod with the 2x converter.

Very good for the price and weight!

Comments about 500mm f/6.3 Mirror Lens (White):

I set this up on a carbon fiber tripod with a decent-ish ball head, used a D7000 with base ISO and mirror lock-up and compared it to a Nikkor AFS 70-200 f/2.8 VR with the TC20e 2x teleconverter. I shot indoors at a target about 30 feet away, maybe a bit less, and shot in manual for proper exposure.Overall, I found the 500mm mirror lens to have a really nice smooth focus ring, but that's hardly a selling point- you will absolutely need it. The focal plane is paper thin, and you won't be able to tell that you have perfectly nailed focus until you can blow up the image. A good tripod was essential for taking shots and iteratively tweaking focus. This may sound like a major drawback, but you could also use it to your advantage if it fits what you want to do creatively. A tripod is key though, since it's not a fast lens and focus needs to be perfect. It's light enough to hand hold, but it would have to be broad daylight, and subjects that are far away. Compared to the Nikkor setup, it is slightly less sharp. You can definitely notice the lack of sharpness, but this lens is almost $2K less than that combo, and weighs considerably less.Another functional drawback is that without a tripod collar you're relying on your camera's tripod mount. It's not a heavy lens, but it is enough that you will notice some droop when you are tightening a ball head. Maybe a different (better) ball head would do a better job here, but then you're in the range of ball heads that cost considerably more than the lens.I'm happy I got it, but I don't think I'll get a ton of use out of it. It's kind of a specialty thing.

Comments about 500mm f/6.3 Mirror Lens (Black):

I was looking for a long lens for shooting wildlife on the lake behind our house (mainly Redhead ducks which tend to shy away from humans). I had owned mirror lenses in the past so, the Samyang seemed like a good choice. A lot of other 500mm mirror lenses are f/8. The Samyang is f/6.3 about 2/3 of an f/stop faster. It is small enough & light enough that it doesn't need a tripod mount of it's own. The T mount makes it adaptable to almost any camera that allows release without a lens mounted. The only negative comment is a lot of digital cameras don't offer that feature. The focus ring is wide & very smooth. Pictures are sharp & the colors clear.

I took some shots of Moon, Stars and Nebula.
I found that the pictures quality from this lens are very good for Moon or larger-brighter object shots with Tripod at night. Focusing is very challenging for stars and nebula shot. Especially, I experience less contrast on nebula picture compared to the picture taken from 200mm Nikkor lens. Note that super shallow depth of field makes you take time to focus on the subject in the beginning. Practice on focusing is a must with this mirror lens. For the given price, this lens is not bad.

This lens replaced a Vivitar 500mm I got from BHphoto. A 100% improvement. I have had it now for a week and have tested it indoors and outdoor with very satifactory results. You need to know this is not a $4k L lens so you need to know its limitations and work around them but to me that is what photography is all about. I am having fun with this lens and having used Mirror lenses 20 years ago with film I still enjoy finding the best way to use them.

Comments about 500mm f/6.3 Mirror Lens (White):

First of all, there is a correlation between cost of a product and the value of a product. I had read all the reviews prior to purchasing this lens (As all people should do), so, I was aware of its limitations. Having said that, I can say that I am very pleases for the purpose of the purchase. I wanted to shoot videos of retails; lizards To be exact) in their natural habitat without interfering. This lens performed beyond expectations. Keeping in mind the cost of the lens its value supersedes its cost. Being a fixed aperture lens (F6.3) is of no consequence since the Depth of field (DOF) is exactly what I wanted to separate the subject from the background. Its clarity is very good for the Internet. Being greedy and wanting more of the lens than advertised, I wish it was sharper at distances greater than 50 yards. Yes. This lens outperformed its expectations.
