Comments about 800mm f/8.0 Mirror T-Mount Lens (White):

This lens is not as sharp as a Canon or Nikon lens of comparable focal length. It also is a manual focus lens. However, for the price, this telephoto solution can't be beat.First, the manual focus is touchy because this is an extreme telephoto lens and that is typical for this focal length. When focused properly, the image is reasonably sharp. The depth of field is small, so it is critical to focus accurately; again this is typical for this focal length. Some photographers don't like the bokeh where bright out of focus highlights look like tiny donuts. Personally, I like this look.If you must have an extremely sharp photo, then you must pay thousands of dollars to obtain it. But if getting a very good (tele)photo is most important, than the slight softness should be very acceptable. And... the lens is very light and compact compared to non-catadioptric lenses. You will require a very stable tripod and may need to lock up your DSLR mirror. Any vibration with any 800mm lens will degrade your image. So photographing on a very windy day can be difficult. (There is no image stabilization on this lens.) In the summer, shimmering heat waves affect ALL extreme telephotos. Be aware of this naturally occurring phenomenon as well.Overall, for the money, this is an excellent solution.

Comments about 800mm f/8.0 Mirror T-Mount Lens (White):

rear filter is about half an inch inside a tight (1/8 inch or so) rear lens assembly. Can't be used. Nikon cat lenses have rear filter as last point on lens and easy to screw on.

Comments about 800mm f/8.0 Mirror T-Mount Lens (Black):

This was the only 800mm mirror lens with both front and rear filters and low dispersion glass, making it great for not only telephoto, but (with use of close-up filters) macro photos as well.

The lens has performed as expected based on reviews. Focus is sensitive - I've found best to use preview zoom of the camera and practice delicate adjustments.

I think this has been a great experience in ultra-telephoto photography - the sensitivities of to wind, gentle breezes, slight vibrations in the ground, and heat distortion. Even the earth rotation when photographing the moon was more than expected. This experience will be of value when considering much more expensive telephoto lenses and determining your exact telephoto needs.

I'm giving it one star because I can't achieve focus. If a lens doesn't focus, it's not a lens, it's just a piece of glass. On a tripod, but am unable to get a good focus. I don't expect tack sharp, but I didn't expect ghost images either. Might be the one off that has a problem, not sure. Am returning the lens after I get home and see if a replacement works.

I just bought this lens and was hesitant after I read some of the reviews of manual focus mirror lenses of this type. It has exceeded all my expectations. I have been able to get some extremely sharp pictures of great blue herons in flight. I had one image where the out of focus donuts were a problem but I think this lens is every bit as sharp as a high end lens from Canon or Nikon.

Comments about 800mm f/8.0 Mirror T-Mount Lens (White):

800mm for [$]? Yeah right. That's what I was thinking. I purchased this, along with the appropriate adapter for my Canon T3i, and the available 2x teleconverter. My intention was some amateur moon photography. Two things I noticed quickly: focusing accurately is difficult, and, with the 2x converter installed, star photography produces trails regardless of the ISO due to the f/16 aperture. Image quality turned out to be better than I thought it would be. The addition of a focusing aid (basically a long rod attached to the focus ring) allowed for much finer focus control, which helped greatly. Of course there's all sorts of chromatic aberration visible, but much less than I was expecting, and far less than most cheap telescopes. It's certainly not a substitute for a good super-telephoto, nor will it replace even a moderately priced telescope, but for the price, this lens (and other similar mirror lenses) are a huge bang for your buck.
