The Diskless 2big NAS Server from LaCie is the ultimate approach to a flexible network storage RAID (Redundant Array of Independent / Inexpensive Disks) solution. Since needs differ among all users, the LaCie 2big NAS allows you to choose between faster transfer rates or file mirroring with a simple flip of a switch. For high-speed demanding programs, such as video editing or graphics, you may choose RAID 0 (fast). If data backup is important, RAID 1(safe) will keep a copy of each file on the 2big's two disks (3.5" internal hard drives sold separately). Providing greater integrity and validation than standard hard disk storage, RAID technology is one of the best means to protect your data. With both an eSATA and a USB 2.0 interface, you will experience enhanced transfer rates to complement whatever RAID level you choose.

The LaCie 2big NAS has a blazing fast read speed of up to 100MB/s and a write speed of up to 55MB/s. Authorized users can take full advantage of these speeds through the local network or by remote access using LaCie MyNAS, a web-based interface. A free iOS app with the same name is also available for iPhones and iPads. The LaCie NAS is compatible with Mac, Windows and Linux systems along with their respective client backup software (i.e., Time Machine, Windows Backup, etc.) so users can connect to the LaCie 2big NAS without having to use the same operating system.

RAID Security and Scalability
RAID 1 mode provides hardware-level data protection and secures important files from disk failure. If a single disk fails, you can replace it without having to turn off the LaCie 2big NAS, thanks to its hot-swappable design
Automated NAS Backup
The Dashboard lets you replicate the contents of your LaCie 2big NAS onto an attached USB/eSATA hard drive and vice-versa. You'll be able to create automatic backup jobs tailored to each of your attached devices. Backups can also be configured to start automatically each time a USB hard drive is connected to the LaCie 2big NAS. You can also use your NAS to back up another NAS, whether it's on the local network or through remote access. You can even configure a nightly backup of your NAS onto a backup server in a completely different building
Faster Internal File Sharing
Boost your business productivity with up to a 100MB/s read speed and a 55MB/s write speed. The LaCie 2big NAS is powered by a 2GHz ARM processor and the highly efficient Ext4 file system. This combination optimizes file transfers between users. Everyone on the network can share files quickly and easily, whether they are on a PC, Mac or Linux platform. You'll be able to define whether a folder should be private or public within the network. For private folders, you'll be able to closely control access by setting user- or group-level permissions
Mobile Productivity
LaCie MyNAS revolutionizes NAS remote access, delivering the simplest setup in the industry. Just name your network storage without leaving the Dashboard and it's ready to be accessed from the road. All you need is an Internet connection. From within a browser, authorized users can download, manage and upload files remotely. They can even stream image and audio files. A free iOS app gives them instant access to all the files and storage capacity right on your iPhone or iPad
Seamless Network Integration
The LaCie 2big NAS is compatible with Mac, Linux and Windows. This makes it a viable solution for an entire office, even if your sales department uses PCs and your marketing department uses Macs. And with support for Active Directory, you'll be able to import existing users and groups with a simple click of a mouse
Easy Setup
Even if you're a NAS novice, you'll be able to have the LaCie 2big NAS up and running in 10 minutes. Powered by LaCie NAS OS 2, the Dashboard is a convenient, web-based interface that is user-friendly and provides easy access to powerful features. Setup wizards with presets make advanced tasks such as RAID management, user authorization and NAS-to-NAS backups much more manageable
Energy Efficient
The LaCie 2big NAS helps you reduce power consumption by letting you control its energy usage. In eco mode, it uses one-tenth of the energy of its NAS predecessors without reducing user access to the stored data. You will also be able to schedule shut down and restart times for your LaCie 2big NAS. It also supports wake on LAN protocol, so if your NAS is asleep and using zero electricity, you can easily wake it up from your computer without needing to be physically next to the LaCie 2big NAS
Dual-Cooling for Long-Term Reliability
The LaCie 2big NAS has an advanced dual cooling system that ensures long-term reliability by preventing overheating. Its solid aluminum casing provides 60% more surface area, which diverts and dissipates heat more efficiently. In addition, its thermo-regulated fan turns on and off according to internal temperature. It cools the components while reducing electricity usage
Centralized Printing
Simplify printing by connecting a compatible printer to the USB 2.0 port on the LaCie 2big NAS. Now any authorized user will be able to print from any computer on the network

Comments about LaCie Diskless 2big NAS Server:

I have a 4 year old BIG NAS drive. The Fan stopped working. Not a big deal but when inquiring about repair, I learned that since it is an out of warranty repair, it would be a min charge of $149.00. It is the fan that broke which is a $7.99 - $12.99 item but since Lacie customizes the 2 wire lead, I can't get it from the manufacture of the fan. Have to get it from Lacie. They will not fix it but replace the whole unit. I would also need to send in my drives with my 2gb data on them which would be lost, so I would need to back up all the data on another drive 1st. Then move it back to the new Lacie Drive. Might as well just get another drive from a company that actually has customer service and repair capabilities. This is only a unit that is 4 years old.

Strong suggestion to all not to buy Lacie if you ever think the unit will go down!!

Comments about LaCie Diskless 2big NAS Server:

Bought 2 x 3TB Deskstars as part of a package deal with this Lacie 2Big NAS. Setup was very simple, and I have no experience with NASs in the past. Very MAC-friendly. Would definitely recommend. Only downside is that I haven't figured out how to partition out the 3TB total storage I now have (RAID-1). I was able to find a work-around solution to limit the size of the Time Machine sparse bundle, though. Look on You Tube. Fairly straight-forward.

Comments about LaCie Diskless 2big NAS Server:

After searching in the right time and at various stores for a computer to save my files off-line and have the function of media server, I found this LaCie the best option and in B & H the best price (now even cheaper than when I bought it). Excellent manufacture, easy setup and multiple functions such as downloading files directly and Auto turning. As an aside, at the moment I have just installed a 500GB HDD a laptop that I just bought, obviously I had to buy an adapter that B & H sells right here. I recommend this server for those who want to have your files safer and have a home media server independently of the operating system being used.

Comments about LaCie Diskless 2big NAS Server:

After paying almost $[$] for this thing, I expected to receive a no-assembly-required NAS drive. Instead, I got an enclosure, two SATA3 drives, and a hex screwdriver, which didn't match the Philips screws. One of the screws did not even fit into the housing, so I have some loose parts left over.Once I put the drive together, it took a long time to get it to show up on the network. It would go into alarming blinking mode at random intervals. I spent about a day looking for help online, and after much finagling, now it's finally working. In short, do not order this unless you like tinkering and have ample time.

I use this product to store my photographs and videos. It performs well under normal conditions. The RAID 1 single-disk redundancy gives me enough peace-of-mind for my home environment. If I were a small business user, I'd probably opt for configuration with more redundancy. The machine performs are specified, and I have no complaints thus far. My only gripe relates to the NAS's performance as a media server; but I'm not entirely sure if this can be directly attributed to the hardware or to my home network configuration.
