I pretty much exclusively use BlackRapid's R-strap when I'm roaming around with my camera. But when I was invited to a multi-day hike of the Grand Canyon I didn't think it would be a smart solution because I'd have a 40+ lb pack on my back and I didn't want the camera loose over the steep terrain. So I googled "hiking camera strap reviews" and clicked through a number of products before settling on the Cotton Carrier.

What sold me on the StrapShot was the locking mechanism. I had looked at a few similar products but nothing held the camera in place like the StrapShot. I was a little concerned about how it would attach to my pack because it didn't have a D-ring, but I ordered it.

We did a 3-day hike down to the bottom of the canyon and back and I was extremely pleased with the performance of this strap. It attached to the pack very easily via the shoulder adjustment so that initial concern was erased. The camera sat comfortably on my shoulder and felt like a natural extension of the pack, And it was really simple to stop, twist the camera, pull it out for a shot, and load it back in. I never felt that the camera was at risk of falling out, and when I had the camera in use the tether made me comfortable that if I accidentally dropped it I wouldn't use it (some have complained that the tether is flimsy, I didn't think so - although I admit I didn't put it to use!).

I already had a hand strap. I installed the one that comes with the StrapShot but liked mine better. My only negative comment for the product is that I would have preferred that this strap not be included and the price dropped a few bucks.

The Grand Canyon was a very challenging hike but the StrapShot performed like a champ and allowed me to take my DSLR along with confidence. Great product!

BLUF: Does it work? Yes-with caveats.
I bought it specifically for hanging a D600 - mainly because I often need both hands free to negotiate steep, slippery trails, and it's too much of a hassle to stop and take off my pack and stow it inside. Hanging the D600 around my neck with standard neck straps is also not an option. Waist or belt clip systems are also unusable because I often slip and fall hard on my rear. I don't like chest straps like the Cotton Carrier because it restrict breathing (I'm usually breathing pretty hard going uphill) - so that left the StrapShot. Unfortunately, the D600 with 16-35, 14-24, 24-70, or 105 micro tends to be fairly heavy. The good thing is that I prefer to have my camera in my hand - except for the brief times when I need to negotiate tricky spots on the trail - meaning I tend to use the StrapShot minimally - and StrapShot works well for short durations. In conclusion - if you use a smaller (non-gripped) camera body, the StrapShot works reasonably well for short durations.
Pros: Provides short-duration solution if nothing else works.
Cons: Pricey. You can't use your Arca-Swiss type camera plate, and the camera won't sit level because of the protruding knob. I'm not quite comfortable hanging a D600 plus a heavy f/2.8 lens off a system that screws into the tripod socket.

Comments about Cotton Carrier StrapShot (Black):

I bought this in preparation for a two week trip to Death Valley. The product seems well thought out and built. Unfortunately my day pack has ergonomic shoulder straps that cut away sharply under the arms. I was not able to find a place to attach the StrapShot. I did put it on another pack that my daughter will be using that has more squared shoulder straps. The fit was very good, and thanks to the way the camera side mounting hub attaches to the threaded tripod mount it worked great for the small digital camcorder she is carrying. I would recommend this product but suggest you verify it will work on your selected pack.

Got rid of my camera neck strap. Works as advertised. I use it hiking and day trips. I'm a nature photographer so I need quick access to my camera. This does the trick for me. What I don't like is that you have to buy an accessory if you have a quick release plate.

I bought this carrier to attach my Canon 1Dx to my backpack. I had been apprehensive about ordering it for my heavy Pro camera but to my relief and satisfaction, it works great! The camera locks into place easily and securely, even with my Canon f2.8L lens attached to my 1Dx. The weight is comfortably transferred to my backpack while leaving the camera easily accessible while walking or hiking.

I know there are a lot of different system and straps out there for cameras but I love the fact that I can have my hands free and the camera is not dangling around. Easy to install on my backpack and the safty strap is a good peice of mind. Just an FYI the strap is not adjustable and a little long with it has to be to give you the freedom to move the camera around when shooting. I was just on an all day photo shoot and it was great being able to lock the camera with a 70-300mm lens on my strap as we waited for the models outside where you really did not want to put you equipment on the ground. Goinf hiking in a few weeks and I cant wait to be able to have my camera ready at all times on a 7 mile hike.

I really haven't used this hiking and I will add to the review once I do. (Record cold in Georgia has kept me off the trail). However, I have to say that it fits my pack well and trying it on at home it seems like it will be 100% improvement over wearing around neck. More to come after I actually hike with it. B&H as always is the number one vendor to deal with for camera stuff. ALB

Works just like I thought it would. Instead of carrying my Canon on a camera strap around my neck (what a pain), this allows the camera to be available and secure on my left chest strap on my backpack. As I hike around the hills in the SF Bay Area, I get more shots, as I do not need to stop and pull the camera out of a case.

I have used on my belt and on my pack strap.
Seems a bit akward at first on a pack strap becuase the camera is held close to your face but it makes it so you have full free arm movement and it is readily accessable. Just takes a bit of getting used to having the camera right there.
Quality is good and it holds my Olympus e-410 with a 70-150 zoom just fine.
I like that it came with a safety tether.
The hand strap it comes with will not work on my e-410 as the strap eyelet is positioned in a way that makes the handstrap ride right over the shutter release. Other cameras with the eyelet more to the side of the camera body would not have this issue.

I have D7000 with 18-200 lens and I was concerned that it would feel really heavy hanging from the strap of my pack (LowePro Flipside), but I hardly feel it - great weight distribution. All in all Im very pleased.

While I still haven't had the chance to use the StrapShot on a hike (I will in September), I had the chance to use this around house and found that the quick release base, which was designed to be velcro attached to a backpack strap, also contains a loop which I can put my belt through. The belt loop is positioned so that when you thread a belt through it, it still retains it's vertical position so that the camera must be twisted 90 degrees and pulled upward to disengage. This means I can use it as a belt holster system as well as a backpack system. Very nice! The hand strap is also very awesome. I leave this on the camera all the time. The quick release system that is attached to the camera's tripod mount is metallic and round, which means it is a little awkward when setting the camera down on a hard surface, but it contains a threaded hole for a tripod or quick detach plate. Very cool. I bought two of these for my two camera bodies when my significant other and I hike. I'm glad I did.

As a travel and location photographer the StrapShot fits easly on my backpack. I plan on expanding its versitility with other features soon. This is perfect for the on the go photographer that only wants to cary the minimum in equiptment.

Comments about Cotton Carrier StrapShot (Black):

I am becoming an avid hiker who needs both hands for hiking. I cannot afford to be holding my camera to my body nor can I leave it on a regular neck strap where it will swing in front of me no matter how tight I make it around my head and neck. I also adventure into the snow rather often and cannot risk dropping my camera or have it hanging too low. I am most interested in wildlife photography and therefore need to have the camera fast at hand as well. This product supports all of my needs during hiking and snow adventures. It keeps the camera close at hand and it is quick and easy to remove so I don't miss a shot. I worried that if I tripped, the camera would come loose from the StrapShot, but it has two safety mechanisms that would keep the camera on your chest and save the camera in most any situation. During hiking, I usually carry a Jansport backpack, but sadly I will need to upgrade because these backpacks do not have the proper clips to work with this product. Any hiking or backpacking backpack will work great though.

first of all, solid construction, easy to use.

IT would been better if there was a mechanism to lock the camera on the strap, instead of just sorta hanging.

Not ideal if you have a quick release on your camera, as the quick release base-plate would slide out, unless you wrap a plastic band or something to stop it from turning and sliding.

Comments about Cotton Carrier StrapShot (Black):

I am a Cotton Carrier customer and when I saw thaey had this option for the backpack I was ordering, I jumped on the opportunity to purchase it. It works very well for holding a camera at the ready while carrying the backpack. I trust the system to hold the camera and keep it attached to the harness and the safty line ensures the safety while shooting, especially in awkward spots. I shoot outdoors constantly and having the added security for the camera is a big plus.
If you are into nature shooting, this is one great piece of equipment for your camera backpack.

Comments about Cotton Carrier StrapShot (Black):

I bought two of these; one for my wife and one for me. Each of us put the rig on our backpacks. We both agreed that the camera secured on one backpack strap made the feel of the camera weight lopsided. We had no weight on one strap and about 3 lbs on the other side. Also the fact that the camera was right there, in front of our faces was a little disconcerting.

Backpacking in this manner would drive me crazy.

That being said, the normal cotton carrier looks like a good idea, because the weight is in the middle of the body and is held in place well by a harness.
