Once again proving their excellence in the realm of home theater equipment, the TX-NR717 7.2 Channel Network A/V Receiver from Onkyo is a receiver that easily provides both high performance and versatility. The TX-NR717 offers premium A/V processing, Blu-ray and 3D content compatibility and an array of connections to accommodate both legacy and advanced equipment.

This receiver employs a Marvell Qdeo video processor that handles upscaling of your analog content to 1080p. And it's also capable of upscaling full HD content to digital theater-level 4K resolution. So no matter what video quality you're working with, this receiver ensures superior quality and smooth, accurate picture quality.

Possessing a THX Select2 Plus certification, this receiver offers superb audio processing as well. It has 3-stage inverted Darlington circuitry with 192kHz/24-bit DACs. Of course, it has a bevy of interfaces to incorporate all your devices into your home theater setup. These include eight HDMI version 1.4a, which supports 3D content and an Audio Return Channel for convenience. These HDMI inputs have what's called Mobile High Definition Link, so if you have a compatible smartphone you can connect it to enjoy 1080p video on your HDTV. Two HDMI outputs allow you to output video to an external monitor. Equipped with two USB ports, the receiver lets you connect your iPod or iPhone for additional choices. It's able to connect to a home network, either through a wired connection or wirelessly with the purchase of Onkyo's LAN adapter.

Rounding out its excellent feature set is support for advanced audio formats Audyssey DSX and Dolby Pro Logic IIz to take your home theater experience to new heights. Audyssey 2EQ room correction ensures customized audio tailored to the unique characteristics of your listening space. Onkyo has also included InstaPrevue technology, which lets you see your inputs in a picture-in-picture scenario for easy switching of sources. Additional features include digital crossover processing, front channel bi-amping capability, and three-zone audio distribution. In so many ways, this A/V receiver rises above its competition to deliver some of the best sights and sounds available for your home theater.

7.2 Channel Surround Sound
A realistic, cinematic experience is yours with the 110-watts per channel TX-NR717 that offers support for a 7.2-channel system. It can provide enveloping surround sound with high fidelity audio for your favorite movies, music and games. Since it is also armed with dual subwoofer pre-outs, you can enjoy additional heart-pumping bass to support your movies and music
8 HDMI 1.4a Inputs With 3D and ARC
An array of connectivity options includes 8 HDMI 1.4a inputs (one on the front panel), 2 component video, one PC hookup, and 5 composite video inputs. If you're connecting by HDMI, the 1.4a specification means this receiver can carry 3D video and an Audio Return Channel (ARC). If you also have a 3D-ready display, 3D-ready cable and 3D glasses, you're on your way to enjoy wraparound visuals with 3D Blu-ray discs and gaming. Support for ARC means you can send audio data from your TV "upstream" to the receiver to eliminate the need for a separate audio connection
Wireless Cloud Streaming, Internet Radio & PC-Based Music
Connect to your home network using a LAN cable (wireless networking is enabled with optional UWF-1 wireless LAN adapter), you can stream audio and Internet radio. Play formats like MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, FLAC, and WMA lossless stored on your PC through your home theater system. This receiver lets you access Internet radio channels from Pandora, Slacker, Sirius XM Internet Radio, Last.fm, and vTuner, plus cloud-based music streaming from Rhapsody, MP3tunes, Spotify and Aupeo
Mobile High Definition Link
The HDMI port on the front panel is designed to accept compatible smartphones and other portable electronic devices using the MHL standard. This lets you display full 1080p video and still images on your HDTV with up to 7.1 channels of surround sound. Use the receiver's remote control playback from your phone as it receives a recharge
InstaPrevue Technology
The TX-NR717 features InstaPrevue visual port management technology, so you can switch input sources seamlessly. This provides a live video thumbnail of the available content on your devices connected via HDMI. Now, you won't have to remember which component is hooked up to which input -- you can see what's playing and choose more quickly
THX Select2 Plus Certified
THX Select2 Plus certification is specified for rooms where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is 10-12 feet and the room volume is around 2000 cubic feet. To achieve THX Select2 Plus certification, the TX-NR717 had to meet the world's most demanding standards for home theater audio quality and performance, and play at reference volume levels with minimal distortion
4K Video Upscaling and Processing via Qdeo Technology
This receiver is capable of upscaling to full 4K (4096 x 2160) of standard video sources like 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i/p. Interlaced to progressive conversion and scaling are handled by Marvell Qdeo video processing technology/ Qdeo uses algorithms to erase video noise and artifacts like "jaggies" and feathering. When played on a compatible widescreen display, Blu-ray discs and DVDs achieve rich detail and cinematic quality 1
Onkyo Remote Apps for iPod touch/iPhone & Android
The Onkyo Remote App 2 for iPod touch/iPhone and Onkyo Remote for Android phone both provide an intuitive way to operate Onkyo network A/V receivers. Control input sources, adjust settings, and play audio stored in a smartphone wirelessly (Android phone only) using the application's interactive graphical display. The two remote apps are available separately as free downloads 2
Multi-Zone Sound
You can assign the front high or front wide channel outputs on this receiver to power speakers in two other rooms of the house. Play music in the main room and zone 2- or zone 3- at the same time, or play a different audio source in either room. Use your stereo amp to power one of the rooms and enjoy any audio source from the receiver in all three zones at once, controllable with Onkyo remote apps for iPhone/Android. This makes it easy to set up and play back your sound, customized to your listening tastes
Direct Digital iPod/iPhone Connection for Cleaner Sound
A USB port on the front panel of the receiver makes it possible to play MP3, AAC, and Apple Lossless stored on your iPod or iPhone, and MP3, WMA, AAC and FLAC audio files stored on a flash memory device using the systems own remote for track selection and playback. Since the audio signal is transported in digital form instead of analog using the direct digital connection, your music will sound extremely clean and clear
Audyssey DSX and Dolby Pro Logic IIz
With surround sound technologies from Audyssey and Dolby, the TX-NR717 affords you a choice of setups. Audyssey DSX is capable of expanding 5.1 sources to incorporate wide or height channels. Dolby Pro Logic IIz can also expand stereo source like music or TV programs. A 7-channel setup offers a more realistic experience, with the high or wide channels carrying subtle directional and ambient effects
Solid Design and Construction
Processing equipment and amplifier circuits are housed separately to limit electrical interference, while PLL (Phase Locked Loop) jitter cleaning preserves signal integrity by eliminating digital clock noise. The amplifier's three-stage inverted Darlington circuitry-an enhancement to the core WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) concept- ensures minimal distortion, and better manages impedance fluctuations. Quality circuitry dovetails with a heavy-duty power supply for instantaneous response to signal gains. The resulting sound is reliably pure, even under heavy loads

I am an Onkyo fan and this device met my preconceived expectations. It provides a centralized connection point for all of my media devices and it was easy to show my family how to operate their desired playback media through the receiver.

Comments about Onkyo TX-NR717 7.2 Channel Network A/V Receiver:

TX-NR717 7.2 gets really good reviews. Set up was much easier than my previous Onkyo (ONKYO TX-NR717). The remote control is so much easier than my previous Onkyo. Sound is great with Yamaha NS-IW280 in-ceiling speakers and with Yamaha 10" sub.

Am leery about owning another Onkyo sine my last one (ONKYO TX-NR717) burned out within about 2 years of operation... which is apparently a VERY common problem with this brand.

Only reason I'm giving this particular model a 4-star instead of 5 is that the sound leveling feature, used to regulate sound for commercials, is a little buggy... many commercials are very loud while movies are often very quiet. Another reason for 4-stars is that you must purchase a separate wifi adapter in order to go wireless. This feature may have been in the fine-print, so buyer beware. The reviews on the Onkyo adapter are terrible, and the adapter is way over-priced. There are alternative adapters on the market, but they are large and stick out from the receiver.

The last reason I give this a 4-star instead of 5 is lack of power outlet on the back side of the receiver. I actually knew this model did not have this feature before I bought it... it's just that I felt like I also needed a component cooler in order to avoid the typical Onkyo over-heating problem. However, the annoying problem with the component cooler is that I now have to physically get up to turn cooler on/off. I would rather have a plug on the back of the receiver that switches on/off with the receiver. I suppose adding an outlet also means a less compact receiver.

I find the ease of use of the Onkyo TX-NR717 a very good plus. The receiver was up and running with in an hour. I use the remote for the initial set up only. I had already programed my Logitech Harmony One (which I would recommend to all).

Comments about Onkyo TX-NR717 7.2 Channel Network A/V Receiver:

I have this receiver powering my 7.1 home theater, a second zone in my home, and a third zone for outdoor use. I replaced the Denon AVR-790 and the differece was amazing. The Onkyo provides excellent sound quality and great function in a very user freindly system. The Onkyo smart phone application increases my use and function, especialy when I am listening to music in my 2nd and 3rd zones. The 11 channels make this a no-brainer when selecting a moderately priced receiver to power multiple zones.

Comments about Onkyo TX-NR717 7.2 Channel Network A/V Receiver:

My Sony A/V Receiver stopped working, so I searched the web for days for a replacement. I finally found this Onkyo receiver. It has all the capabilities that I wanted. First, the video inputs -- it has many HDMI inputs; and it also takes component inputs from cable TV and DVDs, as well as VGA from PCs, and converts them into HDMI output. Second, the audio output is excellent. I went from 5 to 7 channels, using the manual controls to set the level of each speaker. It is, however, important to download and read the user manual BEFORE you buy this (and any other) A/V receiver, so you know exactly what it does, and does not, do. I did my homework, and I am extremely happy with this Onkyo receiver.

Comments about Onkyo TX-NR717 7.2 Channel Network A/V Receiver:

I needed a new receiver that had 3 zones, and this was the newest and most inexpensive model to accomplish this. I had some trouble setting the zones up because the receiver only sends analog to zones 2 and 3. But after calling customer support, I was able to set up the zones using red and white audio wires (in addition to the HDMI digital signals) to my cable box and BD player. The Ipod also works if processed first in zone 1. Only other issue I have is that occasionally the video processing doesn't function perfectly with cable box so I'll see a picture that has horizontal pixelation. It goes away when I change channels - was told it is likely a HDMI "handshake" problem with no obvious solutions. Overall the sound system works great.

Comments about Onkyo TX-NR717 7.2 Channel Network A/V Receiver:

This is my third Onkyo I've owned in the past ten years and I'm very pleased with this purchase. My old Onkyo finally started dropping audio after six years and I needed to expand the number of HDMI input ports anyway.. The setup was quite easy.. I did purchase this with the wireless dongle and connecting into the networks (manual setup option) was quite easy. The only thing I didn't care for was that the rear USB connector on the back does not support the wireless adaptor; thus..you have to go wireless you have to use the front connector..making subsequent USB connections requires you to pull the receiver out to plug in to the rear port. The quality is quite good..I'm driving a 5.1 Definitive speaker solution but getting ready to move to a 7.1 when my new speakers arrive.

Overall an excellent products and a great value...Lot's of options that I'll most likely never use but being an engineer I love technology!

The remote control is better laid-out then my last on (never use this in real life)..only during setup's or configuration changes.
