Bringing the new digital age of photography back to its roots, Leica has finally made it possible to capture authentic 'true' black and white digital photographs with the creation of the black M Monochrom Digital Camera. For years Leica fans had sought such a combination of modern digital technology and traditional Leica black and white photography. Well, they will be happy to finally see a dedicated 35mm black and white digital camera released by the pioneering manufacturer. Its CCD sensor makes no compromises and ignores all color data whatsoever--every pixel records pure luminance values. As a result, it delivers authentic black-and-white images that do not need to be converted or processed in order to achieve sharp monochrome photographs.

In order to allow precise control of the monochromatic tonal values, the M Monochrom offers a raw data histogram, shown on its 2.5" display, which presents you with the original, unprocessed and unmodified RAW image data. This, when combined with the configurable clipping display, allows precise correction of your potential exposures in-camera, before you've even captured the image.

Once you've captured your genuine black and white image, at just the touch of a button they can be converted with characteristic toning effects from black-and-white film photography, including: sepia, cold, or selenium toning. All you need to do is save the image in JPEG format and select the desired effect. You can simply convert your images with no need for post-processing, another convenient in-camera feature that allows you to stay in the field shooting, rather than at the computer editing--and who wouldn't enjoy that?

Continuing to embody the classic themes of traditional black and white photography, the iconic design of Leica M-cameras is carried forward by the Leica M Monochrom. With a matte-black finish on the chromed top deck, it allows the camera to be an unobtrusive tool--so you can capture candid moments discreetly. Even the red Leica logo is missing, and only an engraved script on the accessory shoe reveals the product name at all. The camera features a particularly soft leather trim that provides an ideal grip, perfectly complementing the camera's understated character. The camera package also includes a genuine leather carrying strap in premium full-grain cowhide.

Although the camera offers plenty of in-camera adjustments and alterations, the M Monochrom is supplied complete with a professional digital workflow solution: Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and a full-version of NIK Silver Efex Pro, the world's leading black-and-white image processing software. This software bundle is available to customers as an online download after product registration with Leica. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom offers a wide range of functions for the management, processing and presentation of digital images. For example, this software allows for the creation of simple print layouts, slide shows and photo books. Silver Efex Pro offers an impressive collection of unique and powerful, darkroom-inspired tools for the creation of high quality black-and-white images.

Keeping in line with their renowned commitment to extreme system compatibility, almost all lenses of the Leica M range can still be used on the M Monochrom digital camera. From photojournalism and available light photography to discreet, artistically aesthetic, creative compositions, the Leica M Monochrom adapts to every application and enables the expression of your personal photographic style. The enormous potential performance of the current M-Lens portfolio, with focal lengths from 16 to 135mm, is also fully accessible.

The M Monochrom also utilizes the popular M system's intuitive and discreet handling. Its manual and aperture priority exposure modes are built-in to aid photographers and their creative freedom. In combination with the 2.5" monitor display on the back of the camera, rapid access to the entire range of camera functions is achieved via simple menu navigation, and everything is just a few clicks away. The camera's almost silent shutter, together with its compact construction, benefits discreet and unobtrusive photographers who seek to capture natural, candid moments without interfering. Photographers even have the option to select the appropriate moment for re-cocking the shutter. When longer exposure times require an extremely steady camera stance, a slight press on the shutter release button in 'soft release' mode is all that is required.

All functions of the Leica M Monochrom are constructed with durability and long life in mind. Its full-metal housing, constructed from a single piece of high-strength magnesium alloy, and the top deck and bottom plate machined from solid brass blanks, both combine to provide perfect protection for its precious inner mechanisms. The digital components and shutter assembly of the M Monochrom are similarly constructed for a lifetime of endurance. This provides you with solid reliability over decades of use.

Newly Developed Monochrome CCD Sensor
With its full, native resolution of 18 megapixels, the Leica M Monochrom delivers sharper images than is made by color sensors. The fact that its sensor does not "see" color means only real brightness values are available for each individual pixel, and they record a black-and-white image directly. In combination with the brilliant imaging performance of Leica lenses and the perfect matching of the sensor to the M system, this creates pictures of outstanding sharpness and natural brilliance. The impressively low noise level of the monochrome CCD sensor also delivers an extremely fine-grained image, which is quite usable even at the highest ISO settings without disturbing noise levels.
Raw Data Histogram and Parameter Clipping Warning
For discerning users and fine-art photographers, a raw data histogram for exact control of tonal values is available on the digital LCD display. In contrast to standard histograms, it depicts the actual raw data, unprocessed or compressed. This, in combination with the parameter clipping view, enables exposures to be optimized with great precision in order to accurately utilize the available dynamic range.
In-Camera Tone Changes
With the M Monochrom images can be adjusted to the characteristic tones of analog black-and-white photography at the press of a button--whether sepia, cool or selenium.
Classic Leica Design
The classic, iconic Leica M camera design is carried through in the Leica M Monochrom. The matte black chrome-finish of the top cover leaves the camera discrete and unassuming, while an engraving on the black accessory shoe reveals the product name. The soft, tactile leatherette body covering also keeps with the overall discrete look. The camera also comes with a real-leather carrying strap made of high-grade cowhide, and additionally there is a new handgrip available, featured with the same black chrome finish and leather trim as the camera.
Silver Efex Pro and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
After registration of the camera, a full version of the world's leading black-and-white image processing software, NIK Silver Efex Pro, is supplied as a free download along with a copy of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. Silver Efex Pro incorporates a unique and powerful set of darkroom-inspired tools to maximize the quality of monochrome prints produced by the M Monochrom. Silver Efex Pro emulates over 20 different black and white film types to recreate the classic monochrome look of film. The emulation is based on detailed analysis of multiple rolls of each film type. This results in accurate reproductions of popular film from ISO 32 to ISO 3200.

Comments about M Monochrom Digital Camera (Black):

I have being a big fan of Leica for years, I have been shooting with a M3, then a M6 and this was the right to do: move to digital (Leica) format. I'm really pleased the way this camera handles light (Like all Leica cameras and lenses) I paired it with a Summilux 50/1.4 and of course the results are amazing. I feel more inspired to go out and shoot everyday. In a nutshell, I love this camera, I couldn't have bought another one, I was also in the market for a M240 but definitely b/w was what I was looking for, I'm so happy with this camera.

Comments about M Monochrom Digital Camera (Black):

When almost all photos are being taken with 13mp cel phone cameras, it's likely that most of us are accustomed to that look. The M Monochrom is a wonderful relief. Images rival my M6 with Panatomic X film, using either 35mm or 75mm lenses. During my early learning curve, I was surprised several times by dead batteries. Carrying an extra is worth the cost.

Comments about M Monochrom Digital Camera (Black):

I have a few digital Leicas (M240 and Monochrom) that I shoot with along side an extensive Fuji X system. I will compare these cameras in this review. If your on a budget the Fuji X is another good choice. The Fuji-X's image will rival the Leica M240. But when it comes to the Monochrom, the Fuji -X image is not as sharp. Now, the Monochrom is not worth $[$]more in sharpness, but you can still see a big difference on large prints. Maybe the Monochrom is 20% sharper. What led me to both systems was the option of manual controls. If Fuji had not put a shutter dial on the X cams I never would have bought one. I do a lot of zone focus shooting in dim light as well as fast street shots. In dim light or fast shooting, the Fuji AF does not work well. I don't have time to figure out the push button controls on the new school cameras created by the young gun, camera fondling engineers. The engineers keep making things more complex with more buttons and menus to screw with. By the time you screw with the buttons, the shot is gone. I am an old time film photographer and I like old school controls. Shutter speed dial, aperture ring and a focus scale on a lens. Is that asking for too much??What I like about the Monochrom is that I don't have to fool with BW conversions. The Monochrom has helped me get back to enjoying BW...less time with PP and more time shooting. Shooting with the Monochrom also reminds one to think in BW and look for appropriate shots. The Monochrom images will still require some PP work if you want to perfect them. If you don't like PP, I would not recommend a Monochrom. The Monochrom has beautiful film like grain at ISO 2000 - 2500. Much above this ISO and I don't like the grain / noise. Same with the M240. If you think by buying a Monochrom you will suddenly be a BW genius and be able to make better BW images than with a comparable digital color cam, you will most likely be disappointed. The current conversion software can produce very good BW images from digital color. And you also have the option of using the software's filters to enhance the color conversion. Something the Monochrom is not able to do. You must use lens filters on the Monochrom. The buffer on the Monochrom is decent and is not as slow as the M240. I've lost a few shots with the slow Leica buffering on the M240. But I've also lost shots with the Fuji X and all their screwy buttons and controls. Fuji seems to be trending to taking manual controls away from the photographer. They removed the focus scale from their new super wide zoom. The aperture rings have been redesigned into a useless unmarked ring. And the 'focus by wire' is one of the worst inventions any camera company has come up with. The Fuji lenses that do have a marked aperture ring are poorly designed. They are such a loose goose affair that I have to use gaffers tape on mine to keep them from constantly moving. Fuji's AF is terrible for low light and problem conditions. Even with these shortcomings...Fuji must be commended for their superb X sensor. The Leica is a joy to shoot with. The focus is positive and the manual controls straight forward. Simplicity is the hallmark of the Leica. I don't have to use gaffers tape on my Leicas. The Fuji has a quieter shutter than the Leica. The Monochrom does have the drop on the M240 with shutter sound. You can set the shutter for 'discreet' on the Monochrom and it allows the noisy cocking of the shutter to be done when you release the shutter button. What needs to be done to make things right on the rangefinder world is this… Fuji needs to make an affordable $3000 - $3500 24mp FF rangefinder that takes Leica lenses. They need to copy the Leica and drop one of their superb sensors in it. If Fuji uses one of their sensors a FF 24 mp Fuji would probably equal a 36 mp Nikon D800. As it is, the little Fuji X 16mp crop sensor about equals Leica M240 FF 24mp sensor. See:http://photographycompared.tumblr.com/BUT… Fuji must refrain from trying to reinvent the wheel into a square as they have done with their X system. Leica perfected eons ago what is needed in a good documentary camera. Fuji, Canon or Nikon could only improve on a Leica by making their Leica rangefinder copy affordable to more people and putting a better sensor in it. While the sensors in the Leica's are good, they are not stupendous. And if this never happens...we can still all be grateful that 'for a price' one can buy such a beautiful camera as a Leica.

Comments about M Monochrom Digital Camera (Black):

Great image quality with excellent dynamic range and contrast. With a base ISO of 320 the sensitivity is good in low light and the noise is not objectionable even at the max ISO of 10,000 (maybe because it is finer grain without the bright color spots).

This is the type of photography I started with. Using this camera requires thought and patience. It is not a point and shoot. I love the pictures and it helps me see luminosity rather than color.
The LCD is small, but that has not been an issue, but live-view would really help with composition on a tripod.
The size and weight make it the perfect choice for travel.
It is outstanding for portraits if the model is not moving.
I rated it 4Stars because it is extremely over priced.

I have owned this camera for 5-6 weeks now. This camera reinvigorated my enthusiasm for going out and just shooting candid street images during the evenings. It is a fun and exciting camera to use in low light situations when flash photography is unwelcomed by the subjects. The dynamic range of the black and white images continue to impress me. The digital files contain a great deal of information that blooms with manipulation by Silver Effex and Photoshop software.

Comments about M Monochrom Digital Camera (Black):

The Leica Monochrom is truly a masterpiece! The resolution is something very special. It holds up quite well against the Nikon D800E, or as one reviewer stated, the D800E holds up against the Monochrom. The tones are beautiful, which is something one really must take into account when purchasing a monochrome only camera. But the latitude in the RAW files is where it is at with this machine. Used well, one has an enormous amount of flexibility working with the files. And that is something I haven't found with any other digital camera, albeit I haven't used a Phase One before.
I find the files a breeze to process, particularly since many elements aren't there to worry about...i.e. white balance and color channels. And with Leica glass, the rendering is just superb!
All in all, this camera costs as much as a used Honda. So would I recommend buying it? If you can afford it and love monochrome images, than absolutely! It truly is the best camera I've ever owned.

Comments about M Monochrom Digital Camera (Black):

M Monochrom goes everywhere with me. The images are unbelievable. This camera makes photography a cerebral experience and it rewards you every time you snap a picture. When you take a picture with this camera you are not seeing the color of a person's clothes, you are seeing the colors of their soul. All of the reviews you read about the camera are true, the amount of detail contained in the .DNG files will amaze you. I love the fact that the images are displayed flat on the rear LCD, it gives you an element of surprise when you get home and start to process the images. Only then do you realize what you have. Spend more time shooting and enjoying the process, look at your photos later. This camera is sexy, people will want to talk to you about it, more importantly people will want you to take their picture with it. Underexpose and pull the data from the shadows, avoid blown highlights, everything else is in the minds eye. This camera will fuel your desire to capture life's moments no matter what level you are in you photography career. M Monochrom will make you fall in love with snapping all over again.

Comments about M Monochrom Digital Camera (Black):

I was hesitant at first to throw down the cost of the Monochrom, since it only shoots in black and white. The heck with that...as soon as I began shooting with it, and seeing the results, I felt lucky to be able to have one. This camera produces the sharpest images I've ever seen rendered from a digital camera body...this camera definitely gets the most out of the long line of amazing Leica lenses. The M9 is no slouch, but the Monochrom gives an image a sharper rendering of that "Leica look". And, since it's only black and white, it shoots in low light situations superbly...I've never seen a camera work at such high ISOs without noise being an issue. You can shoot all day long indoors without a flash at high ISOs and get picture perfect sharp images.

If you compose correctly and know how to focus a rangefinder well, you will be rewarded with images that will give you a 3D look, and a subject thats cleanly leaps out of the photo in front of the creamy out of focus background.

Within minutes, this because my favorite camera I've ever used. Contrast and clarity are unmatched by any other camera body I've seen.

My only gripe is that the LCD is useless in reviewing images (it's too small and the images just look terrible)...but if you're looking for a true camera and know how to shoot, you don't have a need to see your images in a small screen anyway. If you absolutely need to see your images via the LCD, you will feel uncomfortable using this camera until you get used to not seeing what you just shot. Once you get used to the camera, an LCD screen becomes irrelevant.

Far exceeds the M9 in low light. 3200 ISO is beautiful and for B&W there is nothing in full frame 135 format that can touch it. The ability to obtain very clean images at 3200 ISO allows me to shoot fast moving subjects at f/8 or f/11 at 1/500 of a second something I never had with the M9. If you shoot B&W street photographs there is not a better digital camera for this at this point in time.

Comments about M Monochrom Digital Camera (Black):

I am a very active and serious amateur photographer. I am a long-time user and (in general) a lover of Leica products. For years I have used the M6 and M7, and now the M9;almost all my work is in B&W. I was excited to hear about the Monochrom and ordered one many months ago; I just recently received mine.

The Monochrom is a marvelous camera. It gives stunning B&W images with all the good qualities we have come to expect from Leica. The M9 is also a marvelous camera and gives stunning B&W and color images. The issue for me was simply this: Are the images from the Monochrom significantly better than those I get from the M9?

The answer, alas, is no. I carefully tested both cameras, hand-held and tripod-mounted,each with the same Leica lens. I then opened side-by-side images on my large monitor and made 16x20 prints of each on a high-quality printer.

While there were some very small differences, there were none that could not be dealt with in any high-quality image-handling program.

Would I recommend this camera to friend? In general, yes, but not over an M9.

Comments about M Monochrom Digital Camera (Black):

I bought this camera for I now find 99 percent of all color photography boring. In my opinion black and white photography is photography in it's purest form.
Composition, shape, and texture are more emphasized with the element of color removed. I feel the rich tones with this camera are the closest you can get to B/W film "digitally".

Like the M9, The quality workmanship of this camera is magnificent and when combined with some of the world's sharpest lenses, the combination is unbeatable.

Two of the world's greatest digital photography software programs are included: Adobe Lightroom and NIK Silver Efex Pro 2.
