Most Sonnet ExpressCard/34 cards (with a PCIe interface), such as Sonnet FireWire interfaces, CompactFlash and SDXC card readers, select eSATA controllers, interface cards for Qio CF4 and Qio E3 pro media readers and ExpressCard 2.0 are also supported.

The adapter boosts specialty adapters like RME's HDSPe ExpressCard and interface cards for the AJA io Express as well as the Matrox MX02 family. Install Sony's latest SxS driver* thus enabling support for Sony SxS memory card. This card is used in Sony's popular XDCAM EX line of professional HD camcorders and the ARRI ALEXA line of digital cameras. With the added capability to read SxS, SxS Pro and SxS-1 cards, it is the high speed SxS memory card reader. It enables Thunderbolt technology equipped Mac computers to read SxS cards at over 100 MBps.

Note! * Sony's Thunderbolt technology-compatible SxS driver for Mac OS X may be downloaded from this Sonnet support link.

The Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter enables you to use ExpressCard/34 adapters with Thunderbolt technology equipped computers to expand your computer's connectivity and capabilities.
This adapter ingests footage from SxS memory cards at up to 100 MBps.
It features high-performance 10 Gbps Thunderbolt technology, 5.0 Gbps ExpressCard 2.0 or 2.5 Gbps ExpressCard interface.

I actually have the Sony SxS USB card reader, which is very cumbersome because it requires AC power to operate. I have been using it for years in the field as part of a TV news crew. Every now and then the USB connection drops, or doesn't connect right away, which is frustrating. Otherwise, it's fine. But now with the echo thunderbolt card reader, it's definitely faster, and very convenient because it requires no power source. So you can log video while still out on a shoot or in a car or plane. Perhaps the best way to use it? Dump all footage onto your hard drive, if you have the room, and then disconnect the echo. I have a Mac Book Air, and an hour of logging soundbites used up about 10-20% of battery power. The echo does get very warm, though. And it does not come with a thunderbolt cable. The echo seems very sturdy and well built, made out of metal and hard plastic/rubber type edges.

I was using this device to input video footage from Sony SXS cards recorded with the video camera PMW Ex1. The device did not register on a new MacBook Pro with retina display. It could be that the operating system was the new Maverick. As I have an older Mac Pro and Macbook Pro without interfaces, this device is useless for me.

Comments about Sonnet Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter:

Apple, in their Infinite Loop wisdom has removed a lot of interfaces from Macs and given us Thunderbolt. If you own a lot of legacy drives with no-longer-present interfaces, this device is half of the solution. Pair it with an appropriate Express Card, and you can have eSata, for example.

      It works.

These readers are an absolute must for those of us who deal with digital film here in hollywood. The sonnet echo pro is THE industry standard for DITs, data managers, and digital types who need to be able to quickly load data from SxS cards. B&H has the best price on the unit of anyone else in the market today.

Comments about Sonnet Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter:

I am a video editor and I have 4 12TB ESATA G Drives that I have been filling up with video and graphic files for the past 3 years. I absolutely had to upgrade my editing rig and these adapters have allowed me to keep editing with my G Drives with no hiccups.

The adapter card that you must pair with these does not sit as tightly and securely as I may have hoped. My advice is to find as permanent a location in your work area as you can, connect everything and then try not to nudge them. ESATA cables are a bit stiff so it may take some time to find the sweet spot as far as positioning.

Also, my iMac only has a few thunderbolt slots on the back, so I do have one of these daisy chained with a Lacie 10TB thunderbolt drive, and I've not had problems with drives being recognized as of yet.

This is the kind of product that we all want but too often, don't get. It is a well designed, solidly built device that does what is says, with the extreme speed of Thunderbolt, thereby working at the effective speed of the card being read, as far as we can tell - and it doesn't even need a power cord!

The only complaints I could possibly muster I mentioned in the "cons" list.

It is as described. I needed something to utilize the thunderbolt on my laptop with eSATA RAIDs and dock to back up footage while in the field. This gives much better throughput than FW800. Uses it with the dual eSATA ExpressCard/34 Expansion Card.
Only one gripe, and not sure if its this adapter or the Expansion Card, but the insertion is a push in to lock, then push in again to unlock and pull out. However, the lock doesn't work very well, and you don't even have to push it in to unlock it, you can very easily just pull it out. Be careful! To be safe, I gaff tape it all together to avoid accidentally ejection of the expansion card.

Comments about Sonnet Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter:

This is your starting point for converting your Thunderbolt ports to anything else. Sonnet makes many ExpressCards for FireWire, eSATA, and lots of popular media cards.

We use this in the field for our tv productions. Works Well, faster than the Sony USB3 SxS card reader. Although it's limited to 1.2 Gbps max transfer speed. Only complaint is that it doesn't have easy access to Firmware updates which I needed for the reader (not to be confused with the Apple firmware update ) and no immediate contact information for questions I had.

Needs a plug to cover the slot to keep out dust or dirt.

Amazing speed! I use two of these for offloading Sony SxS cards to RAID drives via my Retina Macbook Pro. My first wish would be a second Thunderbolt port so they can be daisy chained (I'm using Thunderbolt drives too and the MBP has only two ports). My second, more important wish (and the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars), is that there is no cover of any kind for the slot opening. I use these in the field not in an office and am very concerned about the amount of dust that might get into the device. I use paper tape to cover and seal the front of the unit when it's not in use. A spring loaded flap like on laptop ExpressCard slots would be best, but even a manual flap or rubber plug for the front would be helpful.

This adapter works great and as advertised by Sonnet. It works seamlessly with thunderbolt.
I bought the Pro version of this product thinking it is backwards compatible with the non pro versions of eSATA express cards, reading the fine print made me realize it is not compatible with every non pro cards, only some. Not going to ding it a star for my ignorance although would of been nice to make that more noticeable.
