The adapter boosts specialty adapters like RME's HDSPe ExpressCard and interface cards for the AJA io Express as well as the Matrox MX02 family. Install Sony's latest SxS driver* thus enabling support for Sony SxS memory card. This card is used in Sony's popular XDCAM EX line of professional HD camcorders and the ARRI ALEXA line of digital cameras. With the added capability to read SxS, SxS Pro and SxS-1 cards, it is the high speed SxS memory card reader. I actually have the Sony SxS USB card reader, which is very cumbersome because it requires AC power to operate. I have been using it for years in the field as part of a TV news crew. Every now and then the USB connection drops, or doesn't connect right away, which is frustrating. Otherwise, it's fine. But now with the echo thunderbolt card reader, it's definitely faster, and very convenient because it requires no power source. So you can log video while still out on a shoot or in a car or plane. Perhaps the best way to use it? Dump all footage onto your hard drive, if you have the room, and then disconnect the echo. I have a Mac Book Air, and an hour of logging soundbites used up about 10-20% of battery power. The echo does get very warm, though. And it does not come with a thunderbolt cable. The echo seems very sturdy and well built, made out of metal and hard plastic/rubber type edges.

I was using this device to input video footage from Sony SXS cards recorded with the video camera PMW Ex1. The device did not register on a new MacBook Pro with retina display. It could be that the operating system was the new Maverick. As I have an older Mac Pro and Macbook Pro without interfaces, this device is useless for me.

Fast and Easy as an SxS card reader

      By Greg

Comments about Sonnet Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter:

When I first started using an XDCAM camera with SxS cards I installed the drivers from Sony's website to allow my Mac to import files directly from the camera over USB. I lived without a dedicated memory card reader for a while just because of the expense. After all, Sony's SxS reader is $ and it's just a memory card reader! I bought this Sonnet device and a Thunderbolt cable and then, presto! It was plug-and-play using the drivers which were already on my computer. Transfer speeds are blazing fast (especially compared to USB 2 using the camera as a card reader). Now that I've started using it, I don't mind having spent the money for this. I only use it as an SxS card reader so I can't comment on other functions it can do.Just FYI, I also have an XQD card and adapter to use with my XDCAM camera. When I put that card with its adapter into this Sonnet device it did nothing. That's okay because I have a USB 3 card reader for the XQD card, and it's only a little slower than using this Sonnet reader with an SxS card.

      Compatibility problems

Comments about Sonnet Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter:

Works great for SxS cards but I haven't been able to get it to work with My Sonnet eSata Express Card adaptor, which is primarily why I bought it. I was in touch with Sonnet tech support and ran all the diagnostics and power calibrations they recommended for my MBPr but to no avail. The tech support rep became unresponsive after that. Disappointing.

Using the Sonnet Echo Pro Thunderbolt adapter /reader on a feature film. After 2 weeks of filming, no problems with any of the SxS cards from an Arri Alexa.

I understand this is the preferred reader for DIT's in the industry, and it has not let me down yet.

Had to download a driver, which was a bit convoluted, but works flawlessly.

I like the rubber feet on the bottom- they don't slide when you put a card in. The overall construction is very solid.

I use this to transfer footage from SXS cards. It has really cut down on transfer times. You'll need to download the drivers from Sonnet to make it work with a MacBook Pro, but very simple. I do wish it had 2 Thunderbolt ports for loop through. Also, it does not come with a Thunderbolt cable.

For a long, long, long time, my options for ingesting Sony XDCAM SxS media was always USB 2, so it was slow. Recently Sony came out with a newer USB3 bus-powered SxS card reader, however it is much more expensive than the Sonnet Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt reader. It's super fast; as fast as the SxS media can go, and it's also bus-powered. A perfect solution for editing on my MBPR at a very reasonable price. In order for my MBPR to see the SxS media card, I had to download the Sony XDCAM driver for Mac, and it was easy and solid.

Apple, in their Infinite Loop wisdom has removed a lot of interfaces from Macs and given us Thunderbolt. If you own a lot of legacy drives with no-longer-present interfaces, this device is half of the solution. Pair it with an appropriate Express Card, and you can have eSata, for example.

                It works.

I am a video editor and I have 4 12TB ESATA G Drives that I have been filling up with video and graphic files for the past 3 years. I absolutely had to upgrade my editing rig and these adapters have allowed me to keep editing with my G Drives with no hiccups.

The adapter card that you must pair with these does not sit as tightly and securely as I may have hoped. My advice is to find as permanent a location in your work area as you can, connect everything and then try not to nudge them. ESATA cables are a bit stiff so it may take some time to find the sweet spot as far as positioning.

Also, my iMac only has a few thunderbolt slots on the back, so I do have one of these daisy chained with a Lacie 10TB thunderbolt drive, and I've not had problems with drives being recognized as of yet.

This is the kind of product that we all want but too often, don't get. It is a well designed, solidly built device that does what is says, with the extreme speed of Thunderbolt, thereby working at the effective speed of the card being read, as far as we can tell - and it doesn't even need a power cord!

I've been using this with my UAD-2 Solo Laptop and Windows 8.1 on a late-2013 MacBook Pro Retina. Works great, no special work required (just the drivers, available from the Sonnet website).

The only complaints I could possibly muster I mentioned in the "cons" list.

Comments about Sonnet Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter:

It is as described. I needed something to utilize the thunderbolt on my laptop with eSATA RAIDs and dock to back up footage while in the field. This gives much better throughput than FW800. Uses it with the dual eSATA ExpressCard/34 Expansion Card.
Only one gripe, and not sure if its this adapter or the Expansion Card, but the insertion is a push in to lock, then push in again to unlock and pull out. However, the lock doesn't work very well, and you don't even have to push it in to unlock it, you can very easily just pull it out. Be careful! To be safe, I gaff tape it all together to avoid accidentally ejection of the expansion card.

Comments about Sonnet Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter:
