Comments about Synology DiskStation DS1512+ 5-Bay NAS & 15TB Hitachi Deskstar 3.5" HDD Kit:
A very simple product to install and configure, well-designed, stable, with sustained good performance.
This system is used as a central storage hub in a "home" network which is probably a little more sophisticated than most such networks -- I use a Mac Mini to provide LDAP authentication, and multiple machines runnings Windows 7 and Mac OS (10.7 and 10.8 server, using both Win and Mac laptops and a Mac Pro) as "clients". Files run the gammut from pictures (about 50-60K) to music, to large application files, to code, to archive/storage. To my surprise the Diskstation authenticated right away against the LDAP and worked essentially "right out of the box". I was expecting far more issues. The RAID performance has been fine. I'm very happy with this product. Of course it's only been a couple of weeks at the time of writing so my experience is limited, but so far this is a product I would recommend quite highly.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS1512+ 5-Bay NAS & 15TB Hitachi Deskstar 3.5" HDD Kit:
I have this NAS for 4 months now and I love it. I am a systems engineer and I work devices like this one. I can tell that this is a great product. If you are thinking about "DROBO!!??!!??!!" forget it. Synology is way better. I know that is a weird name and many people don't know it yet, but you are not going to regret. All the different apps, teamed NICs, streaming videos like Netflix to your cell or computer, automatic update with DYNDNS, share files, define rights, users, email notifications if a drive goes bad or any other warnings. The alert was very good for me. I have my NAS setup in RAID6 and I still have 9TB available. It is a peace of mind. Last month, I received an email from my NAS telling that drive number 1 died, and the good thing is that you can configure the Synology to send emails using you google account. After a few days, I got a replacement drive from B&H that has an awesome customer support, put it in and it started rebuilding the raid. Perfect and awesome.
