Product Highlights
  • Very Fast f/1.8 Maximum Aperture
  • Excellent Low-Light Lens
  • Pleasing Bokeh (Out-of-Focus Areas)
  • SP Coating Repels Dust, Water, Grease
  • For APS-C Digital K-Mount Cameras

The smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens from Pentax is a fast f/1.8 lens for cameras with a Pentax K mount. Mounted to a camera with an APS-C sensor, this lens gives an angle of view equivalent to a 76.5mm telephoto lens--ideal for portraits. The wide f/1.8 aperture makes this an essential lens for working in low light, and it also delivers beautiful bokeh (the out-of-focus portion of a photograph). This lightweight (4.3 oz) lens is very compact--just 1.5" (3.8 cm) long. The addition of Pentax Super Protect (SP) coating to the lens helps prevent dust, water, grease and other substances from attaching themselves to a lens and degrading image quality.

Very fast f/1.8 maximum aperture is ideal for low light situations and produces pleasing bokeh in the out-of-focus areas of a photograph
76.5mm telephoto equivalent in APS-C format
The lens is treated with the Pentax's original SP (Super Protect) coating, which repels dust, water, grease, and other substances that may adhere to the surface of the lens. The protective coating promotes trouble-free use in all kinds of shooting situations.

Bought this as the first prime lens for my new Pentax K-5 system. The first thing that struck me when I used it was how noisy the auto focus was. Guess years of Canon USM has spoiled me. After that auditory shock though, it was all uphill. The focusing is spot on on my K-5, and it is sharp from wide-open as far as I can tell. The Bokeh is nice too - much better than the Canon EF 50 F/1.8. But then that lens is half the price!I like the build and the design of the lens... solid plastic and compact. The plastic mount doesn't bother me... but yeah for $ + one could expect a metal mount. But we are paying for the Pentax clarity and contrast...both of which are there in loads. I think the bigger decision for potential buyers should be this against the trusty Pentax FA 50 F/1.4. You can get used copies of the same for the cost of a new 50 F/1.8. I decided for the new 1.8 because I believe that technology becomes better with time. Why buy old when one can buy new? ;) So far - haven't been disappointed.

I just purchased this lens and have only experimented with it twice but at moment I am not so happy. First pictures came out all blue. Second try produced less then very ordinary shots. However I think that I am too new to post anything negative and please allow me a bit more time to experiment some more. I only purchased this lens because I was led to understand that prime lenses produced sharper images but like I say I think I am too early to really post my results for your next customer. Hopefully this coming Thursday I will be able to get out and try again. Supposed to be a nice decent fall day in Chicago and anxious to use this lens.

This is a great fixed lens. I bought it because the aperture goes as large as f1.8 and because it was on sale. I could probably benefit from a wider angle lens but I went for the larger aperture.

Side-by-side with the Canon 1.8/50, the Pentax blows it out of the water. Sharp as a syringe where you need it, creamy bokehliciousness where you don't. Beautiful colour rendition and very difficult to produce any ghosting or flare problems. Perfect for portraits.
Everyone needs one of these in their bag — it won't take up much space.

This small lens weighs little and is bright and sharp. I find this lens a joy to use. Focus makes
just a slight sound and is fairly quick. If you are

this is a plastic lens (except for the glass obviously) but is well made and exudes quality. very sharp, able to render nice out of focus regions, fast AF (if a bit noisy but not objectionable). I'm glad i got it, especially bundled with a K5iis for $[$]which is a screaming bargain.

For the price, this is an excellent lens, though I would've preferred to see an internal motor rather than the screw-drive. The plastic mount shouldn't push you away unless you're planning on ripping it from your camera; in which case I think you have bigger problems to deal with.

It's rare to find values like this lens these days. I spent hours researching which prime lenses I would order along with my K-5iis and K-50. After reading many reviews, I came across the DxO Mark ratings for best lenses for the K-5iis. The DA 50mm 1.8 is in the top 3. The 35mm DA L F2.4 is right up there too. Sold! Yes, they are noisy, and they have a plastic mounting ring, but they feel well made for what they are. The quality of the images they produce, are far and beyond the realm that their price conveys.

This lens is compact and sharp. It's considerably smaller than my old SMC Pentax 50mm f1.4. But then I have a number of f 2.8 zooms that cover that focal length and so don't use a fixed focal length very often. My only complaint, and it doesn't matter that often, is that the focusing motor is noisy.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

It's very difficult to complain about this lens, which came bundled with my k3. In a time when all the manufacturers seem to be relentlessly pushing their lenses up-market and raising prices through the roof (Sigma is now getting [$] for a 50?), it's great to be able to have the option of an affordable 50. Yes, it's plastic and is a little noisy, but the image quality is excellent (one side-by-side comparison on the net shows it to better the Pentax 50 1.4). It's perfect for shooting the kids and anything else--I find the focal length the most useful of any lens. My only grip is that they could have designed in a bayonet-style lens hood mount (52mm thread, no bayonet), but you can always pick up a cheap threaded one. So far, it seems well-made.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

It is noticably soft wide open, so don't buy it for the speed. It's decent when stopped down to f2.8; by f5.6 it's as sharp as anything. Auto focus is VERY loud but quick.

The lens mount is plastic so I doubt it would stand up to heavy use. I honestly don't have a problem with the rest of the plastic. Structurally it seems sturdy enough, and plastic is probably more thermally stable than metal anyway. The mount though, should be a little tougher, in my opinion.

This one was included with the K-3 by B&H, so I'm grateful to have it and it will see some use, but overall it isn't as good as other normal primes. I'd say it's worth having in the bag just because it weighs next to nothing.

This was bundled with a K-3. I didn't need another 50mm lens, but I'm happy with the picture quality from this one. Too bad they didn't equip it with a decent lens hood and a metal mount.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

This lens is so light and portable I love it! I initially purchased the Sigma 50 mm f/1.4 lens which is probably higher quality but so large and heavy I knew it would get left behind. The quality of the Pentax f/1.8 is great and it fits easily in my camera bag with my 18-250mm & 18-50mm f/2.8 lenses
