Questions? Ask our experts:

The smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens from Pentax is a fast f/1.8 lens for cameras with a Pentax K mount. Mounted to a camera with an APS-C sensor, this lens gives an angle of view equivalent to a 76.5mm telephoto lens--ideal for portraits. The wide f/1.8 aperture makes this an essential lens for working in low light, and it also delivers beautiful bokeh (the out-of-focus portion of a photograph). This lightweight (4.3 oz) lens is very compact--just 1.5" (3.8 cm) long. The addition of Pentax Super Protect (SP) coating to the lens helps prevent dust, water, grease and other substances from attaching themselves to a lens and degrading image quality.

Very fast f/1.8 maximum aperture is ideal for low light situations and produces pleasing bokeh in the out-of-focus areas of a photograph
76.5mm telephoto equivalent in APS-C format
The lens is treated with the Pentax's original SP (Super Protect) coating, which repels dust, water, grease, and other substances that may adhere to the surface of the lens. The protective coating promotes trouble-free use in all kinds of shooting situations.

Bought this as the first prime lens for my new Pentax K-5 system. The first thing that struck me when I used it was how noisy the auto focus was. Guess years of Canon USM has spoiled me. After that auditory shock though, it was all uphill. The focusing is spot on on my K-5, and it is sharp from wide-open as far as I can tell. The Bokeh is nice too - much better than the Canon EF 50 F/1.8. But then that lens is half the price!I like the build and the design of the lens... solid plastic and compact. The plastic mount doesn't bother me... but yeah for $ + one could expect a metal mount. But we are paying for the Pentax clarity and contrast...both of which are there in loads. I think the bigger decision for potential buyers should be this against the trusty Pentax FA 50 F/1.4. You can get used copies of the same for the cost of a new 50 F/1.8. I decided for the new 1.8 because I believe that technology becomes better with time. Why buy old when one can buy new? ;) So far - haven't been disappointed.

It is noticably soft wide open, so don't buy it for the speed. It's decent when stopped down to f2.8; by f5.6 it's as sharp as anything. Auto focus is VERY loud but quick.

The lens mount is plastic so I doubt it would stand up to heavy use. I honestly don't have a problem with the rest of the plastic. Structurally it seems sturdy enough, and plastic is probably more thermally stable than metal anyway. The mount though, should be a little tougher, in my opinion.

This one was included with the K-3 by B&H, so I'm grateful to have it and it will see some use, but overall it isn't as good as other normal primes. I'd say it's worth having in the bag just because it weighs next to nothing.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

I love this lens! I have 4 Pentax DSLR's, an ist DL, a K20D, a K7 and a K5iis. This lens operates equally well on each one as it should, and gives vey clear pictures with zero vignetting. Capable of low light photography without having to crank the ISO or use such a slow shutter speed that you need a tripod. The 52mm filter size is common enough that finding an array of filter for this lens is not difficult. This lens renders a wonderful geometric bokeh. If you use manual focus the focus ring is wide with positive texturing that allows for precise adjustment with no creep. This is not a toy lens, this lens has the potential to be a serious piece of gear in your photographic kit. The only thing negative I have found is the lens can be, at times, slow to focus. However, this may simply be part of an inherent problem with all Pentax DSLR's.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

Great for lower light situations and creating bokeh.

At wider apertures (F1.8, F2.0) the subject can appear blurry, but I felt this was due to the nature of a shallow depth of field and not the lens itself. It may be prudent to set to manual focus to obtain peak sharpness. I took a few photos of garden flowers at F1.8 (with auto focus) and was pleased with the quality and end result. Please note, I only noticed the slight blurriness with the lowest F-stops.

This lens is quite lightweight compared to the 18-135 zoom lens that is usually attached to my Pentax K30. My neck and shoulders will appreciate the lightened load.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

It was meant to be a part of the Pentax K-50 family and it is. Although I wish I could have afforded the f/1.4 lens, this lens works fine and is well made and a perfect addition to the Pentax K-50 family of DSLR cameras. Highly recommend it. Am waiting for the 50-200mm lens and feel certain it will live up to the rest of the Pentax K-50 family of lenses and accessories. No complaints. Highly recommend it.

Noisy as all of the screw-drive lenses, but I expected it.
For the amount I spent, I couldn't be more pleased.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

I love what this lens produces. Great resolve given the format, pleasing Bokeh, very lightweight, manual focus is nice and smooth (which it should be of course). As others have mentioned, and I'm not yet sure if it's a gripe, but the bayonet mount is a composite material (read not metal), and I'm not sure how it'll do in the long run. Only time will tell there, but my skepticism grants four stars only.

This is the first lens I used with my K-3. I was entirely prepared to sell it off for the DA* 55, but I've been so pleasantly surprised by the output that I'm absolutely keeping it.

I understand why some would complain about the somewhat loud AF and the plastic casing, but neither of those aspects are concerning to me.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

This lens will improve your photography capacity in a low light environment. But don't get too excited. If you like portrait photography, then I would say this is a good choice. but if you want to shoot in a room, you would not have much space to cover a large area.
Overall, with the price you pay for this lens, I evaluate it as a good choice. It is small and and light.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

The Pentax 50mm lens is used for taking pictures for sketches drawings.
I like it because there is no distortion and everything looks normal.
The drive motor on the lens is a little noisy but it doesn't matter for what it's being used for.
