Panasonic's Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 Asph. Lens for Micro 4/3 (Black) is the first constant-aperture standard zoom for a mirrorless system camera. With an equivalent (in 35mm format) 24-70mm zoom range, this is a close match for a type of zoom lens that's very popular with photographers using full-frame cameras--from a true wide-angle to a short telephoto focal length and a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture through the entire range.

This lens features POWER O.I.S. image stabilization, nearly silent operation when shooting video, and specially treated glass that dramatically reduces ghosting and flare (Nano Surface Coating), minimizes chromatic aberration (Ultra Extra-Low Dispersion glass), and improves descriptive performance from corner to corner (Ultra High Refractive glass). A splash-proof and dust-proof design means you won't need to handle this lens with kid gloves, or put your camera away when a drop of rain falls. This lightweight (10.8 oz) lens is also compact (2.9x2.7") and has a sturdy build quality, with a durable metal mount.

Lens has f/2.8 brightness over the entire zoom range
Nano Surface Coating technology for dramatic reduction of ghost and flare
UED (Ultra Extra-Low Dispersion) lens minimize chromatic aberration while the UHR (Ultra High Refractive) lens realizes high descriptive performance from corner to corner.
POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) that suppresses large, slow movement 2x more effectively
Outstandingly compact and light-weight among the lens with the same level of performance
Capable of using under harsh conditions with its splash / dust proof design
Circular aperture diaphragm
Durable metal mount

I bought this lens as an alternative to the Olympus 12-50 to be used as an all-around lens to use when traveling or going on photo walks. For that purpose it's perfect; it's weather sealed, it's small (compared to the full frame equivalents), it's much sharper and faster than the Olympus 12-50.

Sure, if, a could get everything I would have wanted it a bit faster, say 1.8, to compensate for the greater depth of field you get with a m4/3 camera. f/2.8 on what in reality is a very wide to wide-normal lens isn't really enough to isolate you subject from the background unless you get really close up but then again, if this is your need you should probably not use a crop factor camera at all. And yes, it's expensive for a m4/3 lens but not really when compared to the same type of lens for Canon or Nikon, and consider what you get for the money.

This lens, a longer zoom like the 45-200 (or the 35-100 if you can afford it) and a faster prime such as the Panasonic 25mm 1.4 or the Olympus 45mm 1.8 is really all that you need for taking the 99% of photos you ever going to take (and I say that as a working photographer that use this equipment for paid jobs as well).

Purchased the lens back in August 2012 as a fast wide/standard zoom for nature and travel photography. Construction and image quality are good to very good with minor issues of corner sharpness and vignetting at wide open. Experienced two serious issues though in that quality of individual lenses is not consistent: had to try out three lenses before I found one that performed very well. My biggest complaint is that the lens is NOT dustproof, contrary to their advertising claims. Within ten weeks of normal outdoor use (nothing extreme such as beaches or sand dunes...!) the lens started to accumulate dust inside the rear element. Totally unimpressed and disappointed and definitely do not consider it worth the money!

I bought this lens for a recent trip to farms in eastern WA. What a delightful surprise! It not only worked for the broad expanse of fields of waving wheat, but for close ups of barns and derelict cars. It may become my new "walk around" lens.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 Asph. Lens for Micro 4/3 (Black):

It is lightweight and small. It build well.
The zoom ring is smooth. It is possible to do smooth zoom in and out during video. The focus ring is drived by wire, so it is very hard to do rack focus in video. That is a drawback of m4/3 lens. Focus is fast. It focus pretty close for a standard zoom lens. I was thinking purchase a macro lens. But I find I can get most of close up shot I want with this 12-35 lens.
OIS is better than my 35-100 f2.8.
Lens is sharp wide open. Video look great too.
It is surprising prone to flare. Contrast decline in backlight situation. It is quite obviously when I use this lens. I do not understand since it has special coating that is suppose to reduce flare.
Overall I am more happy with this lens than the 35-100 brother.
        Price is reasonable around $1000.

Sharp, clear and bright in an incredibly useful zoom range. Somewhat pricey, but you certainly get what you pay for. After considering the Olympus EM-1 I invested in a full Lumix GX7 system and couldn't be happier with my decision. I also purchased the 7-14mm variable aperture and the 35-100mm f/2.8 zoom which provides a continuous shooting range of 14-200mm equivalent.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 Asph. Lens for Micro 4/3 (Black):

Recently purchased a Panasonic GH3 and knew I didn't want to go with a kit lens. This is definitely worth the investment to have 28-70mm equilavent with a constant f/2.8 to achieve narrow DOF and low light performance. It's nice and compact compared to Nikon and Canon glass.

The auto focus is amazing especially being completely SILENT. Other pro glass is so noisy when pulling auto-focus. It can change focus even while shooting video which is impressive. Love using it with the GH3 touch screen so you can focus just like you do with iPhones or iPads but with pro glass.

The price only seems high until you see what it does, then you understand the value. I like it better than my old Canon 24-105mm. Well built, and perfectly balanced with the Lumix GH3. Vibration reduction is good for 2 stops. Fast, quiet AF. Compact, unobtrusive size is welcome for shooting documentary style.

Price is worth it. I use it with GH2 and GH3, planning to use it with Cinema Pocket soon, very soon.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 Asph. Lens for Micro 4/3 (Black):

I bought this lens to compliment my other two lenses - the Lumix G 35-100mm f/2.8 and the Lumix G 20mm f/1.7. I own the Panasonic GH3 camera body and these are all great lenses for that camera.

I intended to mostly shoot video but have had a lot of fun working with this lens for still pics, too. I recently took a trip with my gear and the 12-35mm lens stayed on my camera the most. It gave me greater options as the longer lens was too close at times. This one gave me the most versatility.

I haven't used it yet for video except for a few test shot, but it has been fast and sharp. Auto focus has been good and quick.

I don't know if this is a down side but the only "negative" with this lens is that it seems tighter to connect to the camera more than my other two Lumix G series lenses.

So far, I'm pleased with this purchase and would recommend it.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 Asph. Lens for Micro 4/3 (Black):

I only use this lens for video, so still photographers can ignore all of this. This is one of the widest zooms you can get for the BMPCC and if you need image stabilization there are very few options (and the OIS is excellent on this lens). We do a lot of hand held interviews for a web series and this is a great lens for that. The zoom range is ideal with the 2.88 crop factor the speed of the lens is great and works well for interiors with little additional lighting. It is a very sharp lens and has a nice solid feel to the zoom and focus mechanisms. The fact that it can hold the 2.8 aperture through the zoom is a big bonus and doesn't seem to drift as happens with some other lenses I've tried. Though this isn't a true parfocal lens, and all the elements are being adjusted electronically, it is as close as you are going to get with a MFT lens that has stabilization. You can snap the zoom and still have a relatively natural zoom effect without the focus going bonkers. I tested this against the Panasonic 14-140mm and the Panasonic 35-100mm and for video this lens was far superior for our needs. The zoom feels and looks better, the range is great for most of our applications and it is just a fun lens to shoot with. I wish it was a little cheaper and could do all of this with an even longer zoom range, but I do love this lens.

I use this lens primarily for video on Lumix GH2 and GH3. The improved optics and the maximum apperture are noticeable in sharpness compared to the 14-140 especially wide open and in low light.
I did notice that mounting it was not as smooth on my GH3 and felt tight like it was scratching a rough surface but mounted perfectly on my GH2 bodies, I've had no previous problems with any other lenses on either body. The zoom and focus rings are smooth and feel ok, not Canon L but ok, if somewhat plastic. So far other than the mount, the high price, and the plastic look and feel it is working fine for my applications.

This lens is compact and IOS works ok. I use it on the Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera. There is additional crop with the BMPCC, so it looks more like an equivalent 28 mm on a DSLR, instead of the 24 mm wide in the description. So wide is good, but need more.

f/2.8 is nice, but for good bokeh, a wide aperature is needed.

My first package was defective. The lens would not auto-focus with the BMPCC focus button. B&H thought that was normal. I asked for a second package. It worked fine with the BMPCC focus button.
