The black HandsFree-495 DL Waist Pack from Kata is larger than the 493 version of this bag. It remains a viable shooter's bag for anyone doesn't want to be encumbered with a traditional shoulder bag or backpack. This waist pack leaves your hands free to pursue your photography without the worry of a bag dragging down your shoulder or back. It's rated to hold your DSLR with a mid-range zoom plus two additional lenses such as a 24-70mm f/2.8. Your camera is held in top grip shooting position so that when you unzip the bag, simply grab the camera, shoot, replace it and move on. This bag is the way to go when you want a lightweight bag that holds enough gear to get you through a gig.

The ripstop and nylon bag opens away from your body so that only you will be able to see inside. That's a big plus when you're in the middle of a crowd. Inside, your camera is stored in top shooting position so that when you open the bag, you're ready to shoot. The internal dividers can be configured to suit your gear needs. The inside lid has a storage pocket for media cards or batteries while outside there are two larger zippered pockets that are sufficient to hold your flash, two more medium range zooms or a water bottle.

When the weather is wet, simply deploy the built-in rain cover. Additionally, this bag will accept optional Kata Modi-Vers dividers that will permit you to customize the bag even more by cutting the dividers to exact shape to accommodate specific gear. The Modi-Vers are yellow and will make locating your gear easier in marginal lighting conditions. In addition to the snap coupled waist belt, a top carry handle is provided for quick grab moments. The bag is backed by Kata's five-year warranty.

I almost bought one of these from another manufacturer, but several reviews warned that that bag tipped down when loaded. I'm glad I found this one instead. It's perfect for my needs, and is very comfortable when worn for long periods of time.

Comments about Kata HandsFree-495 DL Waist Pack (Black):

I bought this waist pack a year ago, after trying so many different systems that just didn't do what I wanted them to do. This is one piece of gear I can't live without. I carry my Sony A77 camera with a 16-80 lens, a large Sony P & S and my Canon G-11 infrared camera, plus assorted extra batteries and filters. If I leave the P & S at home I can load a rain poncho or a water bottle plus everything else. Sometimes I need to carry a small, lightweight backpack with another camera body but for hiking, this is perfect. I don't have a lot of weight on my back and my gear is immediately available.

Comments about Kata HandsFree-495 DL Waist Pack (Black):

After browsing the web for a long time, I found this was the best option for me and my budget. Backpacks weren't very practical for me cause I change lenses a lot, and I simply don't like camera bags that look like male purses.

My d800 fits very nice with my 85mm 1.8g or my samyang 14mm 2.8 in the central pocket.
In my left pocket I put my sb700 or a medium size lens like the samyang and in the other pocket I put my 50mm 1.4 and 28mm 2.8, and I think I could fit a 3rd one of a similar size.
I can even put some extra batteries and stuff in the main pocket.
And with all that, it doesn't feel that heavy.
