  • White Diffusion Material
  • Bounce or Shoot Through
  • Long Throw Capability
  • Reinforced Shaft
  • Carrying Case

If you had to choose a single light shaping tool, you might do well to pick the Impact 7' Parabolic Umbrella (Translucent White).

First of all it's a really huge, broad light source that wraps light around your subject yielding clean highlights and rich open shadows. But due to the special shape of the umbrella there's a unique mix of soft enveloping light with the kind of crisp detail you only get from reflectors. This umbrella has a unique design structurally as well. The shaft is reinforced for strength and instead of bendable metal, the 16 inner ribs are made of durable fiberglass.

The white translucent version of this umbrella yields the softest light. Used in standard bounce mode, some of the light escapes through the material, slightly raising the ambient light level and lowering contrast while most of it is directed towards your subject. If you want a harder light, turn the umbrella around and aim the convex side at your subject and punch your light source through it. In both modes you can vary the light quality and output by changing the light-to-umbrella distance along the shaft.

You can also use this umbrella as a scrim over your subject to diffuse harsh light sources like the sun in situations like fashion catalog work outdoors or at the beach. Any way you use it, with the Impact 7' Parabolic Umbrella less is definitely more.

Measures 7' (2.1 m) in diameter

You can use this umbrella as shoot through or direct and get great light but the price you pay for lighter weight is that you have to treat it with care.

Comments about Impact 7' Parabolic Umbrella (White Diffusion):

Well made. Comes with a case (a valuable accessory, especially when you don't have it). Even though lightweight, the size creates a lot of weight for the central shaft. Some flexing occurs. Not a deal breaker if you understand that and work with it. matching quality to the Westcott line of umbrellas.

Comments about Impact 7' Parabolic Umbrella (White Diffusion):

It is an awesome size for a translucent umbrella, but you had better have a strong enough stand to hold it up , or it will pull your lights over. Even at 3 pounds

I shot a family of 7 with this umbrella. It was a sunny day and it worked perfect to difuse the light.
FYI- if nobody is there to hold, get sandbags. It is an umbrella...it does not take much wind to start tipping.

I must say I haven't used it yet but initial impressions are positive. I was debating between this one and Westcott's more expensive alternative. The material is thick enough, not almost translucent like some of my cheap white umbrellas. The fiberglass connecting rods look solid and the umbrella is heavier than I expected. In use, I don't know if the weight will be an issue. It will surely need a very solid support. On windless days I think this umbrella will be very practical in many ways.
