    Vanguard #PH-113V 2/way - Pan/tilt head.

Comments about Vanguard PH-113V Two-Way Pan Head:

This pan/tilt head was purchased as a Christmas gift for my sister for her new Induro carbon fiber tripod to be used with a Minox MD-62w-ED Angled spotting scope for her Birding. It appears well made, has an excellent QR plate release system, and will work out well for it's intended purpose. EXCEPT; the handle is FAR TO LONG for use with a spotting scope, especially a rather short angled one!
I tried to no avail to pry & slide off the rubber grip on the handle (It is glued in place from the factory) so that I could cut down the aluminum handle, making it shorter in length. Then reinstalling the rubber grip.
[I have done this multiple times with Manfrotto & Gitzo pan/tilt heads with excellent results!]
So, I ordered a Gitzo replacement handle to use in it's place. Unfortunately the Gitzo handle is a tiny bit larger in diameter! So I had to round over the edge of the plastic end cap of the Gitzo handle. Pry open a small amount with a wedge the handle fitting from Vanguard, to force into place the Gitzo shortened handle. (It was an additional cost: and a long, taxing, frustrating modification that had to be done.). The original handle was far to long for spotting scope use that just polkaed you in the shoulder, and was awkward to use & control the movement of the spotting scope while looking into the eyepiece of the scope! [I originally called Vanguard to see if a shorter handle was available: NO. Then asked them how the rubber grip was affixed to the aluminum handle? Explaining to them what I was trying to do. I was told it was affixed with some kind if special epoxy & could not be removed! I suggested that possibly in the future that they ship the pan&tilt heads with the rubber grip NOT attached to the aluminum handles so that the customer could determine the length of the handle for THEIR intended use of the head?
They seemed not interested in this suggestion what-so-ever!].Too bad! Otherwise this pan/tilt head is reasonably priced & a nice product.

Comments about Vanguard PH-113V Two-Way Pan Head:

I attached this head onto a car mount that I made out of some 2x3's, 2x4's and flat wood. The mount is stable but it's a bit tight and difficult to adjust when needed. Maybe after more use it will loosen up.

Comments about Vanguard PH-113V Two-Way Pan Head:

I was looking for simplicity of use and a lot of rigidity. The two degrees of freedom (up-down rotation, and pan left-right rotation) are individually lockable. The quick-release puts 1 inch by 3 inches against the camera, and has a square base for versatility. It is easy to put the camera away without removing this plate. On the head there is a safety latch to keep the camera from falling off if the quick-release lock lever loosens for any reason. The quick-release lock lever provides a very secure and rigid clamp onto the quick-release plate, and I expect it will work just as well after many years of wear and tear. The arm, shown sticking way back in the catalog photo, is adjustable with an allen wrench, so you can rotate it to taste, or simply leave it off completely.
I like the up-down rotation range of more than 90 degrees, so I can set up for portrait or landscape simply by rotating it. No camera L bracket needed.
The motion damping is very heavy so you can get acceptable support for smaller cameras (such as my Fuji X-E1) without having to lock the swivel joints, if you are in a big hurry. The two lock levers are a bit stiff, which is why I gave it only 4 stars. Maybe they will limber up with more use, we'll see.
Overall, it is very smooth, very sturdy, and very simple.
I use it with a Berlebach 3032 wood tripod. This tripod has a ball level built in, so I just level that, and the two degrees of freedom in this pan head are plenty for me.
