The Optoma TW631-3D Multimedia Projector packs a lot of advanced features backed with strong specs and cutting-edge technology into a surprisingly affordable package. Its 3500 lumens of projection power combined with its 10,000:1 contrast ratio and WXGA (1280 x 768) resolution means it will provide a tack-sharp, vivid image in medium to large rooms, even those with high ambient light challenges.

Another of the TW631-3D's key features is its Texas Instruments DMD DLP chip. This single 0.65" DC3 DMD DLP processes not just the three primary colors that all other chips work on, (red, green and blue), but also their complements: cyan, magenta and yellow. DLP chips increase the brightness of colors by 50 percent versus DLP chips without it. An added advantage of this chip is that it requires no filter that has to be periodically cleaned and replaced, an operation that can be risky in ceiling mounted installations.

The TW631-3D as its name suggests is 3D capable. Thanks to DLP link technology 3D content can be viewed with compatible 3D glasses and a 3D equipped computer. Studies show that viewers retain 3D screened information more than 2D. Imagine adding this immersive element to classes or presentations.

The projector's wide connectivity includes HDMI, two VGA inputs, a RS-232 and a USB for mouse control. An RJ-45 connector is also included for control of the projector or several of them, remotely over a network. As far as audio is concerned, the 7W sound system eliminates the need for external speakers in most cases.

The TW631-3D is world-ready thanks to its auto-switching 100 to 240 V AC power supply and compatibility with NTSC, PAL and SECAM color systems. It's also compatible with PC and Mac resolution and frequency combinations so it's ideal for laptop-based business presentations.

Lastly, once you've gotten used to the TW631-3D's advanced features you wouldn't want it to take an unannounced leave of the premises. There's a control panel lock, password protection and a security bar to prevent that from happening.

This is being used as a mobile projector. It is used in various conference rooms at our company. Setup was easy. Had to change the colors so they displayed better on white walls. Not very noisy as others have commented on various websites. Employees have commented that it looks great and it works well.

I created a pop-up "outdoor theater" in the yard for my 3 kids. We start before it gets too dark and this has the high lumens to see very clearly during dusk. The puicture is great! (can't speak to the 3D since I never plan on using that capability). The fan is noisy but because we use it outside, we don't hear it at all.

Comments about Optoma Technology TW631-3D Multimedia Projector:

I bought the TW631 on behalf of my church. Our primary use for a projector is for support of a contemporary worship service. It is also used for educational presentations that include Power Point slides or movies.Unfortunately, I am returning the projector because it is apparently faulty and otherwise has some operational features that are not compatible with the way our church uses a projector.Whether the DLP circuits have failed or are just not up to the task is hard to say. We use white text on black background Power Point slides for song lyrics and prayers. The black slides are inserted between worship segments to minimize distractions. When advancing to the next slide, the white text initially appears at half brightness. The brightness level increases in 2 or 3 steps to full brightness in about a second or so. This is unacceptable. There are times during the service when we switch the screen off. I was able to do this with our previous Optoma projector with a video switch and scalar that is between our computer and the projector. I could not use that approach because during both the shut-off and turn-on transitions, distracting images and text were flashed on the screen.I then tried the AV Mute button, which does blank and "unblank" the screen. However, I had also set the automatic power off timer to 10 minutes, not realizing - nor is it documented - that blanking the screen invokes the power off timer. We did blank the screen during the service, but could not "unblank" the screen for the next worship segment. The person running the projector pressed the power button and the screen slowly came to life. He decided to keep the projector activated because at the time we didn't know what the problem was. We also had gone to blue background slides to minimize the brightness level change problem. The person who read the Bible lesson for the day was confronted by the projector beam since the lectern is right below the screen.I recommended buying this projector because of its impressive brightness and contract ratio specifications in spite of a bad review regarding fan noise. I tested fan noise by invoking the High Altitude speed. Yes, the fan is fairly loud and we could hear it most anywhere in our relatively small sanctuary.I also did an actual temperature test. I placed the sensor of a digital thermometer at the rear of the projector. I set the heat in the sanctuary to 73 degrees. When the temperature at the projector read 83 degrees the high speed fan came on. After turning the heat off, the temperature gradually dropped and when it passed through 83 degrees the fan did turn off.Our sanctuary has an automatic thermostat that is set to warm the sanctuary to 69 degrees before the first service at 8:30 A.M. If the temperature rises to 73 degrees, air conditioning comes on as the body heat from the congregation warms the sanctuary. This happens quite frequently during the cool season in Glendale, AZ. The high speed fan did not come on during the one worship service (12/16/12) we tried the projector. During the hot season in Glendalethe air conditioning will always be on. I concluded that there was little, but not zero, risk that the high speed fan would come on and disturb the congregation.Concluding remarks:Searching for a projector was a difficult process. There are so many manufacturers and so many projectors! I chose the Optoma because of the manufacturer's reputation and the impressive image specifications. I recognize that no one is perfect and that every once in a while a manufacturer will put out a faulty product. I will not fault Optoma for that. The problem I now have - now that I know what I can run into - is how do I choose the next projector. How a projector functions in actual practice is not necessarily in the documentation and how a projector functions is key to our use during worship.I would also recommend a usage category for worship services in the descriptive literature and include size of the sanctuary as a secondary factor. And I would hope that more details of actual operation would be published.

At 3500 lumens this unit works well even in high ambient light. The setup menu is a little cumbersome but is not as bad as many. Picture quality is excellent. The only thing I do not like about this unit is the high fan noise. It will work fine for a presentation projector but don't use it for home theater, it is too noisy.
