The Z-Finder Pro 2.5x for 3.2" Screens from Zacuto is an optical viewfinder that videographers may find necessary for shooting sharp, stable video on DSLR cameras like the Canon 5D MkIII, Nikon D800, or others with the same size LCD display. Whether shooting handheld or on a tripod, the Z-Finder Pro turns your camera's 3.2" LCD screen into a clear, easy-to-focus viewfinder that lets you see your image in magnified detail, even under the brightest sunlight. Just as crucially, the Z-Finder Pro provides an extra degree of handling comfort and a crucial point of contact--between camera and eye--that adds stability to any handheld video.

The Pro 2.5x version offers an adjustable diopter for near or far sighted users, and the LCD image is enlarged by a factor of 2.5x, so you can see every detail for pinpoint focus. The diopter's extended range of -4.75 and up makes it especially useful for those who are nearsighted. The Z-Finder attaches to your camera via the included Gorilla Baseplate and mounting frame, which mount to the bottom of your camera using a standard 1/4"-20 screw. A non-stick rubber backing ensures a tight fit and prevents scratching of the LCD screen, so that the entire Z-Finder snaps off easily when not in use. Once detached, the unit can hang conveniently around your neck from the included lanyard.

Note! If you already have a Z-Finder, you can purchase just the Z-Finder 3.2" Frame for small body cameras.

The diopter's extended range of -4.75 and up makes it especially useful for those who are nearsighted. 1

Got this to replace a "stick on" frame and removable loupe. The optics on this one are negligibly better than the Genus one… but the build and convenience have no comparison: Zacuto wins hands down. Note that this fits fine over the 5DII, but this was made for the 5Diii. You will have to scoot the frame over when you switch bodies (keep the included allen wrench handy). I chose the 2.5 over the 3x because for me, I was seeing pixels with the 3x more than the overall picture. That, and since I wear glasses, I didn't want to cram my head into the VF just to see the edges. Took out the cute 16:9 mask (say "cheap-o") and now it's not a hassle when I need to be just a wee bit off axis. It's a really nice tool, but you're paying for a lot of R&D already done, and likely future products. IMHO, there is not a competitor that's even close. Compared to a 4" EVF? I'd pick the back of camera any day. Every day. The resolution on your camera back is WAY WAY higher than on those EVF's available today. Yes, they re-position the view nicely, I'll give that to the EVF. But resolution? Forget about it. Add to that that if you get an EVF, you better plan on a rig too. $$$. For me? I chose LCD loupe like this one and a really, really nice external HD monitor but not the in-between EVF. Recommended product absolutely.

Bought this Z-Finder to assist my focus, there are good sides about this gadget, as well as bad sides. The magnified glass made it easier to get the exact focus even in bright sunny days. It is very similar to looking at a EVF.The bad thing of having the Z-finder on is it limited the height range. With the Z-Finder on I can no longer shoot low/high shots, so most of the time I had to remove it to achieve such shots. On top of that, the base plate is a bit disturbing. The secure screw came with it extends out from the back, making it hard to pack the camera into smaller bags with the plate on.Finally, after I put a layer of protection screen on the LCD, the view through the Z-Finder is less sharp.

Comments about Zacuto Z-Finder Pro 2.5x for 3.2" Screens:

I use the Z-Finder mainly when I'm shooting video with my 5DM3. I use the included Gorilla plate, which, does add some bulk and heft to the camera as others have noted. I will say that I haven't opted out of this and gone for the stick on attach, rather, I've added some Gorilla docks to my tripods and actually like the 15mm quick connect that it offers. If you're serious about getting a quality loupe, the Z-Finder seems to be one of the best around. As you might know, Zacuto is a quality US brand, and offer impeccable support. they have shipped me replacement parts at no cost as well as phone support.

I purchased the 2.5x version as several people noted that 3x magnification was a bit much for them. I haven't tried a 3x but I am very satisfied with the 2.5 and feel like its just the right about of screen without heavy pixelation. You do loose a tiny bit of the screen real estate on the top, for example, the red light for record status gets partially obscured, but it is not a big issue. Otherwise, I can see all of the viewable image area, which is the most important.

              +great build quality
+comes with great extras (lanyard, extra anti-fog shields, etc)
              +great support
+turns my DSLR into a great video setup
-documentation and procedure to remote eyecup and boot a bit confusing. -takes a good deal of effort to get on and off if you need to adjust the mask/anti-fog shield. Not something you could do in the field/on location easily/safely?

Comments about Zacuto Z-Finder Pro 2.5x for 3.2" Screens:

The quality of build and usefulness of this product are fantastic, however on a D800, you need to use the 3" mounting frame, rather than the 3.2"? The 3.2" frame is wider, but also thicker, which makes it hard to use any of the buttons on wither side of the back of the camera. Luckily, i had a 3" frame from when I bought the 3x z-finder pro (the 2.5 is much better for not being too close and seeing pixels)

Comments about Zacuto Z-Finder Pro 2.5x for 3.2" Screens:

I've tried to use this several times on different friends cameras. The sales people at B&H keep telling me its the best or one of the best. So I bought it and returned it after trying to use it again. It is clunky, hard to get on and off to the point that I feel like I'm about to break it. You have to add extenders to make the diopter work properly which obscures the screen. And it is way over priced for what it is. And the plastic housing just feels really cheap. The Hoodman viewfinders do the job for have the money and their construction, in some aspects, is much better.

I use this with a d800. It works very well allowing me to see accurate focus and the 2.5X magnification is enough for me. The diopter ring and extenders mean the finder will work well for pretty much anyone. The only thing I don't like (and it's not a big problem) is that on the gorilla plate the 1/4-20 female screw holes are "out board" of the camera's tripod socket (where the gorilla plate mounts). What this means is that say you want to mount a XLR pre amp (like a Juiced Link RM333) it will mount almost to the edge of your camera (it will still work). It would be nice if the Gorilla Plate had additional mounting points for accessories so that one could better center them up. Of course, you can go with a cheese plate or something. But the Z-Finder works great and I like it.

I use this with my 5D Mk. III for video. The Z-finder I have for the Mk.II, of course, does not fit the Mk. III. This is well made and does exactly as advertised. But, the entire concept of a LCD viewer is really only useful outdoors or "run-n-gun."

I still cannot focus accurately quickly enough for run-n-gun.... I need a real monitor... which becomes critical with low(er) light situations. I just do not believe in DSLR video when trying to run-n-gun. While the images produced by the 5D are spectacular, focus is so critical that even with the Z-finder, I miss shots, so only 4 stars because the very concept is only a "better than nothing" (actually WAY better than nothing) product.

I had cheaper viewers but, at best, they were professionally useless. Buy this IF you have to do outdoors or run-n-gun, but beware, the concept is less than perfect.

Comments about Zacuto Z-Finder Pro 2.5x for 3.2" Screens:

This is my second Z-Finder. I also have one for my 5D mk II. As soon as I ordered the mk III, the Z-Finder was ordered at the same time since I just can't imagine shooting without it. Zacuto has dominated the market with this finder since it is crystal clear, adjusts for a wide range of diopter settings, and has stick-on or direct-mount attachments that allow for easy removal, carrying cases, anti-fog filters, sunshade, etc. Lots of options. They make it in 2.5x or 3x depending on your needs. 2.5x is perfect for most uses, 3x is for really delicate focusing even though its a bit harder to frame shots. Build quality is amazing. I come from the ENG world and all of my cameras were built in magnesium chassis and would take massive abuse. This is of the same ilk. Just buy it. Don't save money on cheaper units trying to find that amazing deal. Cheaper ones are a waste of time. If you are making money, spend some once and be happy.

The product works well. I was able to focus as well as can be expected from a magnified screen. Previous reviewers said the unit could be knocked off. Zacuto must have listened because now it is really hard to get off and I end up taking it and part of the bracket off rather than wrestling with the finder. They say it will get looser as time goes on. I'd say you need this unit if you want to do video.

Comments about Zacuto Z-Finder Pro 2.5x for 3.2" Screens:

The zacuto z-finder is a must for dslr video. Not being able to look through the viewfinder when shooting video makes it difficult to determine precise focus especially when outdoors. The z-finder fixes this issue by enlarging the screen for your eye through the viewfinder and cutting out most light. The 2.5x magnification is perfect I think 3x would be a little overkill. With 2.5x you get to see the whole screen without having to scan your eyes around too much to take everything in. It does what it's supposed to do and that's allowing you to see what your frame looks like with no question of focus or exposure. Get it!

I was excited to get Zacuto Z-finder pro and seeing its size, making my DLSR camera look more like a cinematic movie maker.
I also liked the fact that it can still fit on top of my camera's protective silicone skin. I cant wait to use it.

Spent a lot of time research different viewfinders, and very happy I chose this one. The only reason I did not give 5/5 stars is that I find it very difficult to easily snap on and snap off the viewfinder to its frame. This is made more difficult because of the extender I needed to add (for my vision), and the extender is extremely difficult to remove from the frame. So much so that its easier to just remove the entire assembly by unscrewing the single screw which attaches the base plate to the bottom of my D800.

Without this I'd struggle to get as good of focus. I use this on my Canon 5d Mark iii. It is built well and seems solid. I really like the fact that the eye piece detaches from the mounting ring...Very convenient. I have nothing bad to say about this product. It works as it should.

I'm getting older and need something like this to help me see while filming. The finder looks like it is well built, but the thing is impossible to remove from the camera without, I felt, all most breaking something. The spacers are worse! I reviewed the video on there web site on how to remove and it was not helpful. Maybe I got a bad fitting one but at that price they all should work perfect. I returned for a refund.

This finder is helpful to use doing run and gun type of shooting or working with a shoulder rig. I usually use a SmallHD monitor for framing and focusing when I'm not in a rush. The finder works well, but it is still kind of hard to really capture pinpoint focus, but this may be more due to using a flat picture profile with little contrast than the finder. I'm glad I got it and use it quite regularly.

The viewfinder is key for doing serious video work with the d800 and it is great product. One word of caution: The control button on the back is impeded if the Nikon d800 screen cover is removed when attaching the mounting frame. This can lead to the camera not recording video which I discovered the hard way and missed some key moments in a shoot.Keep the cover on and the problem is fixed.Zacuto makes this clear on the website when it comes to the adhesive mounting frame but I wish they had said something in the documentation with the finder.Hope this helps any other d800 users out there.

everything is perfect and it is better than an off brand....way better! I think it should cost less but I learned a long time ago that if you buy the best it hurts once when you pay. If you buy less than the best it hurts every single time you use it! Since this goes on the camera every time it is used...dont go cheap.
