Fun and Flexible Shooting Modes

6 Scene SR AUTO

Portrait: Recognizes portraits by detecting faces quickly in frame and optimizing focus, brightness and white balance
Landscape: Scenic shots like mountains and buildings are automatically recognized. Surroundings such as sky, forests, and flower fields are captured in vivid color and rich depth
Night: For low-light and night-time scenarios, shutter speed and sensitivity are automatically adjusted, resulting in clear, blur-free pictures with low noise
Night Portrait: When photographing people at night or in low-light situations, SR AUTO optimizes flash range, shutter speed, and exposure of portraits, while capturing smooth, luminous backgrounds
Backlit Portrait: Optimizes brightness of faces that usually end up in shadow and underexposure due to harsh light from behind
Macro: Sets focusing position accurately for close-up shots of tiny subjects, such as details of small flowers

Pro Low-light Mode

Perfect for capturing stationary subjects in low light, this mode automatically takes a series of 4 high-sensitivity, low-noise exposures and combines them into a single image with even less noise than the individual exposures

Dynamic Range (HDR)

Utilizes Multi Frame technology to capture 3 consecutive photos shot at high speed-under-exposed, normal exposure, and over-exposed. The 3 images are subsequently layered to an optimum balance of detail in shadow and highlights, getting rid of "blackout" or "washout" and creating pleasing, natural gradations

Natural Light and With Flash

Having difficulty deciding whether or not to use flash? Select this mode, press the shutter and automatically capture the same scene twice: Once with high sensitivity and natural light, and once with Intelligent Flash. Later on, choose the one you like best, or keep both

Face Detection

Optimizes pictures of people by identifying faces and adjusting focus and exposure to ensure bright, clear results. Red-eye Removal in Detected Faces automatically locates and corrects flash reflection for an ideal end result. Plus, you can instantly detect as many as 6 faces simultaneously. Share group portraits using zoom up function in playback, checking each detected face. Every priceless expression can be cropped and saved with clear, high-definition results

Face Detection Timer Function

After the number and position of faces in a scene are detected, this mode captures the photo at just the right moment, with faces in focus and properly exposed. With the Couple Timer selected, the camera waits until two faces are close together in the frame. Choose "Near," "Close Up" or "Super Close," depending upon the degree of intimacy you're aiming for. Out with friends? That's where the Group Timer comes in handy. This setting gives you time to get into position as it waits until the number of faces are detected in frame. Select up to 4 faces

Motion Panorama 360

Choose this mode, press the shutter button and sweep the camera to pan the scene. The XP170 captures a stunning 360° panorama shot, both effortlessly and automatically

Tracking Auto Focus

Keeps fast-moving subjects in frame and in focus, even at 5x extended zoom. Great for capturing those dynamic close-up shots

Additional Shooting Modes

AUTO mode is easiest for taking pictures. Use for ordinary photography to get the best results, letting the camera choose the settings while you focus on the shot
Program AE automatically sets the white balance and exposure
Natural Light creates gorgeous images that retain natural ambience when shots are taken in low-light situations
With Portrait Enhancer, camera performs automatic skin tone enhancement
In Sport mode, camera quickly recognizes people or objects in motion for a faster shutter speed to help you catch the perfect moment
Use Night (Tripod) mode to get clear shots of twilight scenes with a tripod
Sunset mode captures sunset scenes in vivid color
Snow mode adapts the camera to winter scenes without unnatural darkened images or situations where the whole screen appears white
In Beach mode, enjoy clear photos of people without darkened images under harsh sunlight
Underwater mode is available for shooting beneath the surface. There's also Underwater (Wide) to let you zoom in closer and get more in the frame, or Underwater (Macro) for extreme close-ups
Party mode is great for shooting indoor weddings or parties, retaining the natural ambience in low-light conditions
Flower mode grabs clear close-up shots of blooming flowers rich in color
In Text mode, you can get clear shots of letters on a document or whiteboard

Comments about FinePix XP170 Digital Camera (Orange):

I have used a Nikon D90 mostly in manual mode, so I know my way around a camera. I also have been using my iPhone 4 for a point and shoot and got this camera for an upcoming trip to S. America to ski. The "rough and tumble" features made this a good choice for the cold and snowy conditions. I've had it a couple of weeks. I know it's a new camera but the manual included in the box was one from 3 camera versons ago. I called B&H and they said I had to contact Fuji and the camera is so new no one at Fuji I spoke too even knew it was out yet. I finally found a copy of the manual online - but that is not what I wanted because I wanted to read it on the plane on the way down to S. America. Okay, these minor annoyances aside, - here is the "jury still out" part - so far the photos I have taken are just ... not great. I have taken side by side photos of things with the Fuji and my iPhone and so far the iPhone is winning in terms of how the pictures look! I hope that it is operator trouble but the photos are fuzzy, dark, bad color, and I've been trying on all different shooting settings, using the auto focus, etc. Let's see how the photos look in the "snow" mode setting while we are skiing, then I'll know if I got a handy rough-and-ready point-and-shoot...or a dud.
