A sensible-sized matte box for DSLRs

Comments about Cavision 3x3" Matte Box with Top and Side Flags:

I ordered this with the swing away (from the manufactuer; specifically equipped for the 3x3 matte box), the 52mm to 85mm Deep Offset Step-Up Ring (AR85M52; from the manufacturer), and extra filter trays. Here are some first impressions:

        • Quality is okay but not spectacular. I would never stand on one of these things like they do in some of the tests. It's a bit plasticy -- on par or slightly better than the DMatte.

        • I am concerned about build quality of the hinges that attach the flags to the matte box. They consist of plastic shafts that house long tightening bolts. It feels to me like it may crack easily with repeated use or age. I have removed them for the time being because they add a lot of bulk.

        • The filter trays that come with the matte box are very lightweight plastic. I am not sure that I'd trust them with my expensive Schneider 3x3 filters (which fit perfectly). However, the extra filter trays that I ordered separately are aluminum and feel much better in my hands. I'll be using them primarily and keeping the plastic holders as backups.

        • The rear rotating stage kept getting stuck the first couple of times that I used it (I think that there was a stubborn ball bearing in there somewhere). But after I broke it in, it works very well and turns pretty smoothly.

        • The swing away is all aluminum and feels well-built. It works well in this setup. The 15mm bracket that hugs the rods sits 2.5" or 3" behind the matte box, meaning that I am attaching my Edelkrone FocusOne Pro follow focus in front of it. I am very glad that I have this particular follow focus with this matte box, because with its one point of contact I can slip it onto one of the rods and then slide it underneath the matte box before righting it.

        • With the deep offset ring, this matte box does NOT vignette with my SLR Magic 12mm on my GH2.

        • This whole setup will be greatly improved with a sleeve (i.e. "nuns knickers") to keep it light tight. Cavision is working on one but I may rig together something myself in the meantime.

Though the build quality could be better (especially the flag hinges), this matte box is the perfect size for the GH2 and any other DSLR. I'd consider getting the version without the flags unless you really need them. I have assembled my kit to be lightweight and functional with nothing extra, and this matte box fits right in.

Comments about Cavision 3x3" Matte Box with Top and Side Flags:

I decided to give the Cavision 3x3" matte box a try for use with pro-level SD and HD camcorders (studio and mobile contexts) and DSLR video work, with and without a rail system. Cavision's description of the product specifications is accurate and forthright: the matte box/filter holder assembly and flags are constructed of ABS plastic; fasteners and locking controls are aluminum, and firmly embedded brass threading collars are provided to accommodate the mounting screws.

Although aluminum would be preferable for withstanding really determined rough handling, the ABS plastic construction is a huge plus with respect to keeping the unit very light and nimble. Engineering and fabrication is solid enough to inspire confidence that it will put up with regular use in the field and studio. The adjustable extensions of the side and top flags move easily and smoothly, and the locking mechanisms hold flags and their adjustable extensions firmly in place.

The rotating filter holder moves smoothly, without any sloppy looseness or binding. Just the right amount of tight fit to ensure that the holder remains where it is positioned. The same holds true for the filter trays, which can be positively held in place with locking screws. The filter tray slots are enclosed along the sides, so with the filter trays inserted no stray light sneaks in to the lens behind the matte box/flag assembly.

The top and side flags provide a generous degree of movement, and can be removed from the matte box if desired. My only [minor] complaint is with the mechanism for locking down and adjusting the angle of the top flag. There's a set-screw that first has to be yanked upward to allow its threads to engage with the collar in the matte box assembly. A rubber collar held captive between the flag and a hex nut on the screw shaft provides the tensioning against which the screw is tightened/loosened to hold the top flag at the desired angle. It works once the screw is engaged, but I can see how easy it would be for a fast-moving or impatient user to damage the threaded collar and/or the screw--and possibly even the top flag (it would take some concerted effort, though). Moreover, the rubber collar is bound to give out over time. I haven't yet checked to determine if a replacement is available from Cavision, but a little creative searching through a real hardware store will likely do the trick.

As mentioned at the outset, this matte box can be used with a rail system or as a clip-on (with the appropriate adapter rings), a factor which was quite appealing to me. I also ordered the Cavision 9mm and 12mm thick rings as well as a shallow AR ring (for wide-angle applications), which has allowed complete versatility for those times when I don't need a rail system on a tripod or when I want to go mobile.

Overall, I'm quite satisfied with my purchase. It's an excellent value for the price, and I look forward to using this matte box for many years to come.
