The Q Digital Camera with 5-15mm Lens (White) from Pentax is a small, lightweight interchangeable lens camera with the look and feel of a rangefinder, but many of the capabilities of a DSLR. Whether you're looking to shoot in stealth mode, or you simply want an easy to carry camera that provides more versatility than a point-and-shoot, the Q was designed with you in mind. Some might consider it a party camera. Pentax simply calls it "evolved".

Whatever you call it, the facts are this, the Q captures in 12.4Mp RAW or JPEG files using its 1/2.3" CMOS sensor. It comes with a 5-15mm (27.5-83mm equivalent) lens and a number of accessories for getting started from day one. And in addition to taking detailed still images, the Q also captures 1080p video, as has been the norm for this genre of compact digital cameras.

Pentax also boasts the durability of the Q, citing its magnesium alloy covers which are also scratch resistant. A 3.0" LCD screen allows for composition of images and in-camera review of your files. The camera also has a built-in pop-up flash, SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card slot, and useful ports, such as an HDMI micro. A nice option for the Q is an external viewfinder, which will give you even more of that old school feel.

In regards to DSLR capabilities, the Q features a customizable quick dial, like most DSLRs, which allows for quick access to custom settings, creative modes, Smart Effect options, and other camera settings. Another way in which the camera mimics the famed DSLR is with a number of flexible settings like Program, Aperture/Shutter Priority, and the like. Another useful feature, HDR Capture, blends 3 images together for photos that bring out details in the shadows and extreme highlights for contrasty, yet balanced shots.

An additional highlight of the Q is a bokeh control filter. The bokeh filter does what a traditional DSLR controls through the lens aperture: focusing out the background and bringing the most important part of the image into sharp focus. This not only makes for dynamic photos, it takes the guesswork out of the photographer's hands, guaranteeing beautiful bokeh. Another handy feature is the Smart Effects mode for adding finishes such as Vintage Color, Bold Monochrome, and Warm Fade to selected images.

Small and Light Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera
The Q represents an evolution in interchangeable lens digital camera design, featuring a small and light body. Experience the Pentax Q. The camera. Evolved.
Q-Mount Lens System and 5-15mm Lens
The Q features the newly designed Pentax Q-mount lens system for convenient interchangeability with a variety of specialty Q lenses. Choose from a selection of prime, zoom, fisheye lenses, and more to suit just about any photographic need. This Q System kit includes the 5-15mm lens (equivalent to 27.5-83mm in 35mm format) with Pentax SP (Super Protect) coating.
12.4Mp
Enjoy exceptional image quality in 12.4Mp courtesy of the Q's 1/2.3" backlit CMOS image sensor. Capable of producing 12 bit DNG RAW and JPEG image, the backlit CMOS sensor is a highly efficient light-gathering instrument designed specifically to produce very low noise at high levels of sensitivity.
Durable
Though extremely compact, the Q is also surprisingly durable, sporting lightweight, scratch resistant magnesium alloy covers.
Traditional DSLR Shooting Modes
Experienced photographers will enjoy the power and flexibility of traditional DSLR shooting modes such as Program, Aperture/Shutter Priority, and Metered Manual exposure control. Yet casual shooters will appreciate the highly convenient automatic modes such as the set-it-and-forget-it Pentax Auto Picture and 21 scene modes.
Customizable Quick Dial
Conveniently choose from a variety of creative modes, Smart Effect options, or camera settings to assign to the Q's Quick Dial located on the front of the camera. Easily customize the setting or effect using the Quick Dial's 4 positions, allowing you to concentrate on photography without having to navigate the camera's menu system.
HDR Capture
In-camera HDR capture mode shoots 3 images of varying exposures, blending them to bring out the details in even the darkest shadows and brightest highlights of extreme contrast shots.
1080p HD Video
Shoot high quality video with stunning full 1080p HD clarity at 30 frames per second. The Q efficiently processes the full HD video using H.264 compression for superior color and detail. Explore creative video effects through the use of custom image modes, digital video filters, and interval shooting; or select from a variety of Q lenses to realize your perfect artistic vision.
Sensor-Shift Shake Reduction
Capture stabilized, blur and dust free images even in low lighting courtesy of the Q's sensor-shift Shake Reduction system with integrated DRII Dust Reduction. Body-based Shake Reduction operates independently of the Q's lenses, allowing the same level of stabilization regardless of lens selection.
3.0" LCD Monitor
Easily compose or review images and video using the Q's large 3.0 inch LCD monitor. The high quality LCD features HVGA resolution with 460,000 dots, as well as viewing angles up to 170 degrees horizontally and vertically.
5 Frames Per Second
Capture even the fastest action with 5 frames per second continuous shooting mode, ideal for sporting events, children at play, or any fast action situation.
Bokeh Control Filter
Enjoy effortless bokeh control with the Q's bokeh control filter. Traditionally controlled through a DSLR lens's aperture, bokeh is the out of focus part of the background that helps to emphasize the subject, drawing the viewer's eyes to the most important part of the photo. The Q assists the experienced and casual photographer alike by offering a fine degree of extra control over image bokeh via an in-camera filter operation.
Smart Effects Mode
New Smart Effects modes enhance digital photography by applying a series of effects to images to achieve high quality finishing. Brilliant Color, Vintage Color, Warm Fade, Bold Monochrome, and Water Color are just some of the Smart Effects available, which can also be assigned to the Q's Quick Dial.
USER Modes for Creativity
Powerful USER modes allow the creative photographer to save a series of favorite camera settings, filters, and custom image modes for instant reuse.
1/2000 to 30 Second Shutter Speeds
Shutter speeds range from 1/2000 to 30 seconds, perfect for freezing fast action or capturing long nighttime exposures. Bulb mode adds flexibility for low light photography and motion effects.
Built-In Pop-Up Flash
The Q's built-in pop-up flash adds the perfect amount of extra light to an image, while its high extension naturally reduces the redeye effect common to compact cameras. The Q's flash is effective to 23 feet at 200 ISO, and covers a wide angle 28 degree field of view.
HDMI Port
A built-in micro HDMI port is perfect for outputting high resolution images and video, with sound, to modern HDTVs.
SD, SDHC, and SDXC Memory Cards
The Q is compatible with the latest generation SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards for ultra-high capacity storage as well as outstanding image file portability.
RAW File Processing
The Q includes SILKYPIX Developer Studio 3 software for powerful and flexible RAW file processing. In-camera RAW image development is also supported.
External Viewfinder Available Separately
Compose images and video either with the Q's LCD monitor or using a shoe-mounted viewfinder attachment available as an optional accessory. The External Viewfinder O-VF1 makes an excellent accessory to the Q, offering outstanding compositional framing, even in the brightest sunlight where viewing an LCD screen is traditionally a challenge.

Comments about Q Digital Camera with 5-15mm Lens (White):

The story of my acquiring the Pentax Q is really the latest chapter of what might be called "My search for a companion camera," which began decades ago with a folding Agfa using 120 film (yes it did fit my pants packet-very uncomfortably) and progressed through an Olympus Pen FT, Minolta 16, Pentax 110, Nikon Pronea S and lately an Olympus E-PL5.

What I have been looking for are small size, pocketability if possible, and good image quality. The Olympus is fantastic, but not small enough to carry all the time. Hence the Pentax Q, which now lives either in my briefcase or on my belt, hanging by a Spider holster.

The camera meets my expectations in terms of size and FUN. Image quality is better than I expected, but far below that of the micro 4/3rds Olympus. The small sensor and short focal lengths produce great depth-of-field, making selective focus difficult. The Q has an in-camera software solution to this problem called "blur control" that allows three degrees of background defocus, but the algorithm is very hit-or-miss. Photoshop is a far a better solution route to throwing things out of focus. The Standard Prime Lens 01(bought from an excellent seller in Japan) is an f/1.9, and at close distances it does produce out-of-focus backgrounds, so that is another solution. Incidentally, f/1.9 is a perfectly usable aperture on this 8.5mm lens, with pictures coming out sharp and contrasty.

The Q has been criticized for slow autofocus and start-up, but I have not found these traits to be troublesome.

In my view, the lack of an electronic viewfinder is a serious deficit; yes, it is entirely possible to compose on the LCD screen, at least if you are not in bright sunlight, but a camera you could put to your eye would be vastly better. (I have long day-dreamed about Pentax engineers modifying the Pentax 110 SLR with a sensor and allowing TTL viewing, but now I see this is not to be.)

My camera turned out to have two DEFECTS. The battery starts fading after about 20 shots. And the intervalometer, which is a terrific feature, shoots the wrong number of pictures- 7 instead of the set ten, for example. I will need to get in touch with Pentax about this.

All told, a very fun companion camera as long as you believe that the best camera is the one that you have all the time-and don't have ambitions of your pictures hanging in MOMA.

Comments about Q Digital Camera with 5-15mm Lens (White):

It was a hard choice between this and the Nikon one lineup to use as a camera for photos and the occasional school video project. Due to the nikon's higher price, lack of controls, plastic body, and lower quality demo video footage, I decided to opt for the Pentax. The little camera does great under most conditions, but starts to get a little noisy in the dark (as expected with the smaller sensor) and night shoots are best with flash or other bright lighting. I really like the different modes this camera has and it makes shooting fun. In the end my only regret I have not getting the Nikon is the lack of an "audio input" jack, but it's fine if you mostly use it for stills I suppose. Also, with a combination of the small screen and the touchy focus ring, getting a good focus can be nearly impossible in manual mode. Overall, pretty nice little camera.

Comments about Q Digital Camera with 5-15mm Lens (Black):

I'm a hiker and was beating up my Nikon carrying it everywhere...so I started looking for a compact with manual controls and RAW shooting capability.
The Q is a perfect camera for my uses. Yes, the sensor is small, but in good outside light I can barely tell the difference from anything shot on the Nikon. No, it's not great for low light even with long exposures, but I'm not putting this camera on a tripod and trying for those shots anyway. I use my Nikon for that.
The quality is evident in the weight of this little Pentax, and I pleased with the lenses as well. And with the ability to just stick it in my pocket and go, I'm having more fun than ever with my photography.

Comments about Q Digital Camera with 5-15mm Lens (Black):

This is the smallest camera with interchandible lenses and very good image quality. Build in flash actually raises up to prevent red eye problem. This flash setup works really well. However maximum distance is about 8 feet, before flash becomes useless. Pentax Q has huge varietty of options, functins and filters. This includes post editing. More options than most entry level Digital SLR's. If you like manual optins, Pentax Q has also manual focus, P/A/S/M settings as well AV compensation up to 3 shutter speeds. Also B&H price of $[$] makes it unbitable value. That is less than most other places charges for included in the kit 5-15mm zoom lens! This is great little camera, but it has few flows. Battery life is very short, about two hours or less, depending on extra functions and flash. Autofocus in low light works poorly. But the worsed issue is how you can use tracing autofocus of moving objects. The only way to use autofocus is to set the camera to auto scenes/sports or scenes/kids. There is no way to use tracing autofocus in any of A/S/M programs! This was the worsed surprise i got from this camera. You have to keep this in mind, before purchasing this camera, especially if you not comfortable using manual focus. I would still recomend this camera, unless you would not mind spending double on none zoom version of Canon or Nikom mirror less SL cameras. Camera is about 3 times smaller than my Canon T3I. I can keep my Pentax Q in my pocket! Not bad for fully fuction mirrorless SL camera! It is also a lot of fun programing, using and editing this little wonder. It's 12.5MB cmos works better than most 16Mb cmoses from other brands. Pentax Q is a great pocket camera, with interchangeble lenses. You can also add external flash! Pentax Q will make great first camera, or secondary camera you like to keep with you at all times. I'm very happy with my Pentax Q and I recomend this camera to anyone!

Comments about Q Digital Camera with 5-15mm Lens (White):

Had this Camera for a few weeks now and I'm crazy impressed at what such a small package can deliver. The interface is super fluid and takes only a second to learn. Besides that, the camera's a tank; really sturdy alloy body (the Q10 is only a plastic body I believe.) The whole thing feels incredibly solid and delivers great 12mp RAW and even decent JPEG images, HD video is pretty great too. The artistic filters can be a bunch of fun as well.
Now there's only so much that Pentax/Ricoh could squeeze into the Q. The screens only so bright and I feel like the optical viewfinder would be really nice to have. Also, the battery life isn't fantastic. Usually lasts 2-3 straight hours. I just ordered a spare. The amount of processing time needed for HDR or RAW images is a little underwhelming too.
I've heard people complain about the AF speed, but if you download the updates for the camera and lenses off of the Pentax site they work a lot better.
All in all, this camera is great and with the price and amount of options in store makes it a perfect camera for a student, traveler, or even a companion camera for the heavy DSLR shooter. I'm really glad I got this camera and I can't wait to get the other lenses to go with it!

Comments about Q Digital Camera with 5-15mm Lens (Black):

Although this could be a good step up from a point and shoot, I found it to be a great companion to my dslr. It can fit in a jacket pocket and great as a travel camera or general use when you don't want that big bomb with the huge zoom lens. It really does have many capabilities of an DSLR. A bonus you can get an adaptor which lets you use all pentax lens with a 5.6x lens factor (your 100mm becomes a 560mm) I have yet to find a negative with this little gem

Comments about Q Digital Camera with 5-15mm Lens (Black):

I never really had a nice camera before, so this is my first real one. I take a lot of pictures so i figured it was time to get a decent camera and learn a little more about photography. So far, I love it. Has very cool look, I've gotten a lot of compliments on it!
