Questions? Ask our experts:

The pinestone gray Retrospective 20 Shoulder Bag from Think Tank is a small, discreet and simple bag designed for the photographer who carries a system such as one pro DSLR with a 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom attached to the camera. Or, it can hold a pro DSLR in the front pocket and 2-4 lenses in the main compartment. The interior dividers are customizable to accommodate the gear you carry on any given day.

The large front flap covers the entire bag and prevents anyone from seeing what's inside. The hook & loop closure is unique with its Sound Silencer system that eliminate the tearing sound normally encountered when you open a camera bag. This is especially valuable when you are shooting in quiet venues like courts, wedding services or chess matches.

The inside of the bag contains an organizer pocket that is perfect for a note pad, mic, or small pack of tissues. Two collapsible nylon pockets are inside and are designed to hold a flash or other similar sized accessory.

Outside, an expandable pocket is large enough for a regular size DSLR body. The back of bag has a wide storage pocket that is made to hold collateral material like paperwork, maps or a note pad. Additional webbing loops are found outside to hold some small Modular, Skin or Multimedia pouches. Or, you can attach a carabiner to it for quick access items like keys. Two side pockets will hold small water bottles or even some small shoe-mount strobe lights. Under the main flap, you have a business card holder.

The carry handle is removable and the shoulder strap contains some non-slip material to keep the bag stable while moving. There's also a breathable cushioned pad along the strap to aid in positioning.

For complete protection, there's a neat rain cover that can be rapidly deployed when the weather turns sour. The cover has been configured to allow the handle and strap to extend but not interfere with the security of your gear. The Retrospective is backed by Think Tank's lifetime warranty against manufacturer's defects.

The exterior of each Retrospective shoulder bag is purposefully simple, allowing photographers to inconspicuously blend into their shooting environment
The "Sound Silencers" underneath the main flap eliminate the loud tearing sound hook-and-loop makes while opening the bag. Simply release the Sound Silencer panels and cover the hook-and-loop strips to prevent the hook-and-loop from contacting
A clear business card pocket, for identification and spare cards, is located under the main flap
Hook-and-loop panels securely fastens the main flap down keeping valuable photo equipment hidden from view
An organizer pocket is located inside the main compartment. It gives photographers enough space for small, but significant, accessories necessary for a successful shoot
All the dividers inside the bag are removable so the interior can be customized to any photographer's set of gear
Inside the main compartment are two collapsible nylon pockets (one on each side). These pockets are tall enough to fit most flash units or other accessories. A hook-and-loop strap can be used to secure the contents or it can be tucked into the pocket for quicker access
An expandable pocket on the front of the Retrospective can be used to carry a regular size DSLR body
A wide storage pocket is located on the back of the Retrospective. This pocket can be used to carry small maps, booklets or other paperwork
Removable carrying handle
A fully adjustable, canvas strap is integrated into the bag. For extra comfort, a breathable cushioned pad slides along the strap for optimum positioning. Sections of non-slip material on the pad helps keep the entire strap on your shoulder
Webbing loops on both sides of the Retrospective can be used to carry some small Modular, Skin or Multimedia pouches on the side of the bag. Alternatively, a carabiner (not included) can be used to quickly clip accessories to the sides of the bag as well
Side pockets on both sides can be used to carry smaller water bottles and will even fit some shoe-mounted strobe units
The included seam-sealed rain cover was specially designed to keep the carrying handle and integrated shoulder strap outside the rain cover without compromising protection from the elements
Compatibility
One pro DSLR with 70-200mm f/2.8 lens attached in the main compartment
One pro DSLR in the front pocket and 2-4 lenses in the main compartment

    Good walk-around bag

    I bought the bag to hold the following: Nikon D800, Zeiss 21mm f/2.8,Zeiss 35mm f/2.0, AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G, AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4.0G. I configured the...Read complete review

I bought the bag to hold the following: Nikon D800, Zeiss 21mm f/2.8,Zeiss 35mm f/2.0, AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G, AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4.0G. I configured the bag to have three equal sized compartments. Any of these lenses can be stored in the center compartment with body attached and hood extended; the bag's flap will close properly. I also attached a Sirui SIBSRP306 P-306 6-Section monopod with Joby ballhead using a carabiner letting it dangle while shooting and flipped up into thefoldover flap while walking (see attached photo). The setup works andlets me shoot with the listed gear effectively. What is wrong with thebag for my purpose? It should be one/half inch thinner andthree/quarters of an inch wider. The interior pockets should be removedbecause they snag the gear and are not usable for anything that has anythickness to it. The dividers should not have hook and loop on theirtop flaps; I had to install the dividers upside down. The bag's sideflaps get in the way of replacing lenses in two side compartments. Abit of rigidity in the sides would make inserting lenses in the sidecompartments easier. Lenses rattle around in the bag alarmingly whenstored without protection. I use the Nikon lens cases that came withthe two Nikkors and Nikon CL-1018 lens cases for the Zeiss lenses. These cases are fabric bags with a rigid bottom. The rigid bottom helpskeep the two side containers of the bag from collapsing.

I love TT products and purchased this one as a long lens and roomier alternative to the Retro 7. I expected it to be an elongated version of the 10, but it was the same width and thickness as my 7. I also received the wrong color (black). I prefer the look and soft feel of the Pinestone series. The black seemed a bit stiff and not as comfortable to wear, although I'm sure it would break in nicely. As always, B&H made the return easy, so it was worth a try.

Comments about Retrospective 20 Shoulder Bag (Pinestone Gray):

Was looking for a bag that would handle my D750 with 70-200 2.8VR mounted as well as have room for a couple of other lenses. This bag fits the bill, albeit just slightly larger than I was hoping for it to be. The materials are top-notch and very well contructed. My only complaints are the size of the flap lid and the pieces of material inside at the top/sides.
      1. The lid is very large and the only ways to keep it out of your way when opening is by either holding it with your hand or folding it backwards to the back side of the bag. To do this you must first push the bag away from your body to make room for it.

      2. Inside the top/sides of the bag there are flaps of the outer canvas that I think are there to assist with keeping rain or dirt out. They are a minor annoyance when retrieving gear out of the side compartments as you must push them out of the way and depending on what your pulling out, it might get caught on these.

I love this bag. It holds everything I need plus room to spare. It might be better if there were a few more smaller pouches inside so I wouldn't have to rummage around to find items. As it stands though it is comfortable, well protected and unassuming. Great bag.

Comments about Retrospective 20 Shoulder Bag (Pinestone Gray):

I think this product is exactly as advertised, and the other reviews I read were accurate. The problem with a shoulder bag that carries a 70-200mm f/2.8 and 24-70mm f/2.8 is those big lenses require a big bag! This bag easily handles those two (inc telephoto attached) with room for more. It has perhaps the most generous shoulder strap I've seen. But I quickly realized that this shoulder bag is very big and with the very heavy gear, it will quickly become a one shoulder lopsided burden. It's great for short distances or perhaps under an airplane seat (can't use overhead bins for camera gear anymore with everyone cramming their bags in...), but if you carry it all day long, you'll be forever switching shoulders.

I was debating between the 10 and 20 and so glad I got the 20. It fits my 5D MK III with 70-200 f2.8 attached; 16-35 f4; 1.4 TC and 24-105 easily. It's also tall enough to fit a 300 f4. The shoulder strap is great because it is wide and padded enough so the bag rests in place without shifting. The build quality and thought that went into the design is excellent.

I bought this bag because I wanted an over the shoulder bag that I could use on short hikes, carry gear on tour buses, and be able to carry my camera with a 70-200mm attached. I am very pleased with my choice! I can carry as little as a Canon 5D an another short lens or three other lenses and an extra camera body! It's quick access to gear and the bag does not scream, "STEAL ME, I'M FULL OF EXPENSIVE CAMERA GEAR"! The design of this bag was very well thought out. Thank you ThinkTank! The ONLY negative I have with the bag are the little protective flaps on the inside covering two pockets. Sometimes my lens hood catches on them. I think they are there to protect your gear from bad weaher, in case you choose to leave the rain cover at home. I just got used to them being there. No problem.

Comments about Retrospective 20 Shoulder Bag (Pinestone Gray):

This is a great shoulder bag for easy access. Previously I had always used backpacks but found it annoying to always be turning the backpack around and/or setting it down to get to my camera.

One of the biggest things that sold me on this bag is that it will hold a mounted 70-200 vertically. This makes for easy access.

One thing that I wanted to know when buying this bag was how much stuff would it hold? I found a few videos on YouTube that were helpful. For myself, I find that it holds a mounted 70-200 nicely in the center divider. I have a 16-35 on one side of the divider with maybe room for a smaller prime lens on the same side. The other side of the divider holds a 430ex II and two PocketWizard Flex tt5s. Also have some miscellaneous items in the smaller internal zip pocket. All this makes for a snug but comfortable fit. I could fit more in the side pockets, the rear laptop pocket, and the expandable front flap pocket, but it would start to get bulky.

I also love the style of this bag. I was so tired of the plasticy camera bags. This is much nicer looking and organic feeling.

Very nice bag. Very easy to get things in and out of, especially if you have the velcro set to 'silent' (which is an awesome feature). It's a little tight with my Sigma 70-200mm on the side instead of connected to the camera, but it's a pretty roomy bag.

I use it for on-location portraits and as a wedding/event kig bag. The center pocket is perfect for a full size pro body with a 70-200 attached. Awesome design to accommodate a couple of lenses with flash pockets.

In street photograph looks very discreet, no one know there is an expensive gear inside. Very well made, amazing color blue matching with jeans or casual fit. I can carry two dx bodies with battery pack attached, plus three medium lens and two flashes AND my iPad. Two side pockets are very tight so I used it just for car keys, pens, or extra batteries. Very comfortable to wear in shoulder or cross chest type.

I like it for the convenience, the look, the ruggedness.
I bought one for my son, as well.
The Velcro for the cover flap is not easy to open. Enen with knowing that it shouldn't be easy to open, I wonder if there is a better flap closure?

I ordered this bag before a weeklong trip to Chicago. For a city trip, quick access to my gear was important, and my large backpack does not allow for that. I also didn't want a bag that screamed attention to the expensive gear I was carrying. Great bag and I look forward to using it for many years ahead. This is the gear I carried every day. Canon 50d with grip, Canon 70-200/2.8IS, Canon 24-105IS, Tamron 10-24/3.5-4.5, (lens hoods for all) Canon 1.4x teleconvertor, Canon 430ex flash, extra batteries, extra CF cards, filter pouch with ND and Circular polarizer, rain pouch, maps and documents in rear pouch, and a small water bottle clipped on outside. I weighed my bag with an empty water bottle, 16.7 pounds. I am a 6'2" male and am very active so the size and weight was not an issue for me. I would have to switch shoulders and positions of the strap during each day as the weight would begin to hurt where it sat on my shoulder. But the bag did exactly what I wanted to do, blend in with the locals, and carry everything I needed while out for the entire day.
