The black PocketWizard Plus III Transceiver is a highly versatile and robust radio trigger that is compatible with all prior FCC-version PocketWizards, as well as most flash and camera systems. Featuring 32 channels to choose from, this transceiver is simple to use in even the busiest of situations. Wireless remote control is possible through the use of Quad-Zone Triggering, which allows you to manage up to 4 zones of remote PocketWizard-enabled cameras or flashes from one position. Without having to leave camera position, you can activate and deactivate groups of flashes quickly and easily. This transceiver also employ's PocketWizard's Auto-Sensing technology, which instantly allows your device to fluctuate from transmitter to receiver. This technology works directly in line with the Auto-Relay function for a completely remote workflow.

The efficiency of this transceiver is further extended by allowing up to 1640' transmissions in normal mode, and nearly double with Long Range mode. High speed, continuous shooting is made possible with the High Speed Receive mode, permitting up to 14.5 fps firing at up to 1/250 sec. for focal plane shutter and 1/500 sec. for leaf shutters.

The design of the Plus III incorporates a side-view LCD screen and touch pad interface for switching between modes, zones, and settings. It connects to any camera featuring a hot shoe and is also compatible with a variety of cables for linking to lighting and other remote systems.

32 Channels
Featuring 16 standard and 16 Quad-Zone Triggering channels, finding an open channel to use is simplified and efficient. Switching between channels is accomplished with one-touch operation.
Quad-Zone Triggering
You can program up to 4 working zones for remote control of flashes. This allows you the ability to wirelessly activate and deactivate your flashes, enabling you to remain in camera position without having to manually adjust lighting setups. This is ideal for using multiple lighting setups and managing remote cameras as needed.
Auto-Sensing Transceiver
When set in TxRx mode, the transceiver is able to instantly switch between transmitter and receiver modes for the greatest amount of flexibility. You can also manually override this and choose to have it act as a dedicated transmitter or receiver.
Auto-Relay Mode
When using 3 PocketWizard radios; you can remotely trigger a camera to fire and trigger a flash simultaneously. Utilizing the Auto-Sensing technology, the transceiver mounted to the camera can instantly receive a signal from an auxiliary transceiver, and then instantly convey the transmission to a remote flash. This provides a simplistic and highly efficient remote workflow.
Long Range Capability
When used in ideal conditions, this transceiver is capable of producing and receiving a signal up to 1640' / 500m away. When conditions are not ideal for a long range transmission, Long Range mode can be used to nearly double the effective range of the signal. There is also Repeater mode, which will repeat the signal several times, increasing the possibility of a successful transmission at long range.
High Speed Capability
When in High Speed Receive mode, this transceiver is capable of triggering cameras or flashes up to 14.5 fps. Normal performance also permits triggering up to 12 fps. It is also capable of sync speeds up to 1/250 sec. for focal plane shutters and 1/500 sec. for leaf shutters.
Simplified User Interface and Design
Clearly displayed on a 1" / 2.5cm backlit LCD, all of the channels, zones, and modes can be configured using a soft-touch keypad. The design of the transceiver also incorporates a side-view LCD for easier viewing and an internal antenna for a less obtrusive appearance.
Wide Compatibility and Connectability
The transceiver is easily attached to most cameras through the hot shoe, with no extraneous cables required. For attaching to remotes and lights, there is an all-in-one sync port for wide compatibility. Cables are included for attaching from miniphone to miniphone, miniphone to phono, and miniphone to PC sync for cameras without a hot shoe. It is also compatible with all PocketWizard transmitters and receivers (of the same frequency) as well as PocketWizard-enabled lighting and metering equipment. The Plus III is powered by 2 x AA batteries and can be kept up to date with firmware updates utilizing the USB port.

I am a semi-pro wannabe who shoots about 4-6 weddings per year as well as a few portrait sessions. I wanted this for two primary purposes:

    1) To free me up in the studio. I have some Hensel flashes which work great with the optical slave, but I don't like using my flash gun on the camera to trigger them because of the stray light. The cable trigger is just too long and clunky. So I wanted these to trigger my studio flashes. For this, they work swell.

    2) To allow me to more easily use off-camera fill flash for weddings. When I'm outside, I need a softbox and flash to compete with the grey skies and bright sun that we get here sometimes in Sweden. Here the Hensels with a portable power supply are troublesome as the optical trigger goes byserk outdoors. Again, the cable is too cumbersome. But the Hensels themselves are also an issue as they're too heavy for my 11 year old daughter/assistant to handle, so enter Lastolite Hot Shoe EZYBOX Softbox Kit or the Interfit Strobies Folding Softbox (24 x 24") (both sold by BH). With the EZYBOX, you have the option of using 4 flashes simultaneously, which should give one about 320 w/s (assuming 4x SB-800 or 900). Granted, this isn't to the level of the Hensels which deliver 500 w/s, but it should be enough to give the sun a run for it's money and be more portable. You can use 2 pocketwizards (one on the camera and 1 to a speedlight) and then use the optical trigger function in manual mode on the other 3 speedlights in the box to synch the flash. Voila - a solution. Of course, you need the optical trigger which is available on the SB-26, SB-800, and SB-900/910 model flashes to make this work.

Now, these pocketWizards don't support high-speed synch, which is a major bummer for me. To get this, you need to purchase the TT1 or TT5 models (also available from B&H), so to get the apertures to open up a bit at my highest available synch speed for my set-up, I need some neutral density filters. Having investigated some on the subject, I will probably go for the 3 or 4 stop multicoated B+W filters. For those of you who haven't tried them, the multi-coated B+W filters are about 10 times easier to keep clean than the Hoya filters. A tangent here, but I've dropped one lens and my wife has dropped one over the years. On the one with the Hoya filter, the filter shattered and very slightly scratched my lens - not something you want with a 135mm F2 DC Nikkor... On the second one with the B+W filter, the filter ring bent to the point that I could not remove the filter (a tougher drop), but the glass stayed intact. B+W has amazing filters...

Grumble 2: The speedlights go to sleep after a bit. I believe that one can set the timing on this on the speedlights themselves. In any case, the first picture which I take after a pause awakens the speedlight and the flash actually functions on the 2nd or later. I think that if you push the test button, this will wake up the flash, it's just a matter of remembering to do this. Not an issue with the pocketwizard per se, just me learning to use them...

Grumble 3: When you ding the side of these with your finger, you hear the antenna twang. I design antennas for a living, so I'm pretty sure that they have a simple coil stub in the slightly elevated area in the corner. This is the correct design choice due to the frequencies that they're covering and to keep costs down. A coil antenna costs about 20 cents to manufacture in volume, is very efficient and has decent bandwidth. It was the right design choice, but you could put a little foam or something around it to keep it from twanging - it simply sounds cheap.

Summary with a little rambling: Great product. Works great as in all the reviews. At 1/250s flash synch, if you're using this outdoors, you need some neutral density filters and powerful flashes to make things work right.

I like another poster am looking to use these units with Elinchrom Strobe and found they lock up if you are above channel 17 and even trouble on 17, 14 worked fine. I tried putting each into deicated mode of TX and RX respectively with no change. One thing I noticed is that the cord Pocket wizard provides is actually a stereo jack (three separate connections, tip and two coller connection) and you only need mono (two tip and collar). I am curious if extra conector is cause signaling problems. I have bought mono jacks from Radio Shack and plan to make a cord and do to some testing. If find out something more I will post here. I have also hook up pocket Wizard to my Canon 580 with the PC connection and found that both cords the center pin was off center. Nothing insurmountable just not a pain. With 580 both high (new Channels) and old (channel 17 and below) do work. I am not ready to give up yet on the units because of the price and capability. I would also have to say I do not like the side orientation and it additionally worse the button face floor in portrate mode. I have not used other radio trigers and I am hoping that Pocket Wizard will get the enhanced functionality working. I got the Pocket Wizard III because I did not have a radio trigger and this unit does do all the function of the 2+ at a cheaper price. If you have a trigger works for you then I would not upgrade, but if you are just starting like me then I say go for it.

Comments about PocketWizard Plus III Transceiver (Black):

I am using two Plus III Transceivers along with two Plus II's that I already had, and they play together perfectly! The Plus III'3 have many more features, but are still so easy to use, and I really like the LCD readout that tells me everything I need to know at a glance. I'm triggering 3 Sunpak 433AF's (full manual control) from my GH3, and everything is working perfectly! Battery life seems pretty good on these, as well. PocketWizards are the best way to get your flash off of your camera and exactly where it belongs!

Comments about PocketWizard Plus III Transceiver (Black):

Even after a few years of using I still find the orientation a little awkward. On / off isn't easy and takes too long. One of my units takes least 8 seconds to power off.
Having the power on/off as the mode change button just leads to unnecessary changes in function.
They consume a lot of power so always carry extra batteries.
I haven't found the range all that impressive either even outside in direct line.
I like the form but that's about it.

Sorry to say since I am a huge fan of PW, They've been a friend for decades.

Comments about PocketWizard Plus III Transceiver (Black):

I started with cheap Apurture raido triggers from another online retailer. A set of two were the price of one Pocket Wizard X. Great deal right? NO! They were totally unreliable. The flimsy buttons stayed depressed. The battery life sucked. Thankfully I never used them on a paying gig.

I bit the bullet and paid for a Plus III and two X triggers and have had no regrets. They are simple to use, they are fantastically reliable, and are solidly built.

I spent more money buying the knock-offs and THEN buying what I should have got in the first place --- Pocket Wizards.

The pocker Wizard Plus III does just what it claims it can do. It makes photography a lot less hectic especially when you are working alone and have no assistant helping you.I use one on my camera and one on my strobes to fire them.Don't drop it on a hard floor because it won't survive. I did this to my Plus II and the part that goes into the hot shoe broke off. I think they should make it out of better material.Other than that I recommend it highly.

Wish they made them like old. They face a different direction than they use to. Sideways. Off on button isn't as good as it use to be.

I have been using a cheaper radio trigger and now having hindsite I would have put the money out years ago. My old trigger would miss fire and was very frustrating. The PocketWizard has not failed once.

works great, even with my older II models. I have no problems working either direction - III to II ,or II to III.

Used for triggering flash and remote cameras. Works well with other PW models. Easy to use, reliable. It's worth the extra $ over the cheap designs you find on other websites.

I use these in some pretty hostile environments, and they do a good job. If I get a misfire, a slight adjustment on the position of the flash is usually enough to fix it.

Comments about PocketWizard Plus III Transceiver (Black):

I own 4 Pocket Wizard X's. Purchased this Plus III Transceiver to function as my main transmitter/trigger. My mistake is that my Pocket Wizard X's cannot be set in groups...only different channels.

This means that I cannot control the Pocket Wizard X's independently unless they are all on different channels. If they are all on different channels, then they cannot be combined with each other.

Sounds a bit confusing? Let me try to simplify. Suppose I am outdoors and there are 4 tents. I have a Pocket Wizard X triggering a flash under each tent. In order to trigger the flashes in all four tents, all X's need to be on the same channel. If I needed 1 tent to be lit and 3 tents to be unlit because they are out of the photo, I would need to turn off the three triggers manually.

Basically, if I need to trigger the flashes in different combination, I would need to manually turn the X's on or off to get the right combination. This is not very practical especially if I use the long range of these transceivers.

The Plus III's have the ability to be set in different groups on the same channel hence can be turned on or off as needed from the transceiver for different combinations...not necessary to do so manually. Bear in mind that the Plus III's do NOT control the power settings of the flash so if power adjustments are needed, it will have to be done so manually.
