The N5550 5 Bay Enterprise Tower NAS Server from Thecus is ideal for small installations and mobile users. Advanced technologies have been used to develop the NAS Server. It features an Intel Atom processor, which is designed to work without fans, thus reducing the server's noise and power consumption. Equipped with large amounts of DDR3, the CPUs provide better performance. The NAS Server supports multi-user environments, web hosting, intense backup, data encryption, application serving, heavy RAID computations and HD multimedia streaming. The N5550 NAS features McAfee antivirus software, which protects your sensitive data from viruses. It has an embedded PCIe slot. Simply plug a screen through a HDMI output, which enables you to check your server without a computer. You can directly attach a keyboard and mouse to start data management via HDMI.

The N5550 also supports VGA output for attaching traditional televisions, projectors and monitors. The VGA output makes this 5 Bay NAS Server convenient for displaying presentation or media files when HDMI is not available. Additionally you can attach speakers directly to the N5550 NAS to play audio files. Manage media and audio files by simply attaching the speaker plug to the audio out. These features help to lower the total cost of ownership for your network architecture.

Data Burn
With Data Burn, NAS data can be burned directly to CD, DVD and Blu-ray discs. This hassle-free module makes burning data to a disk effortless. Additionally, burning ISO image file is also supported. Data Burn copies information fast as well as reduces waiting time when you are managing audio, media or essential files.
Antivirus
Thecus's innovative hardware helps prevent failures. Adding an antivirus to the already comprehensive software bundle will provide the necessary software protection by scanning the files on your NAS and defending it against possible threats. Thecus allows users the benefit of McAfee's powerful software on their NAS entirely for free.
Cloud Backup
The private and public clouds meet with Thecus's new DropBox and ElephantDrive cloud backup functionality. You can guard your data with RAID at home and an additional level of protection in the Cloud. Drag and drop files into the folder on your NAS and access them on any computer or mobile device with DropBox or ElephantDrive.
HDMI Output
This makes your NAS Server the ultimate multimedia hub by allowing you to connect your NAS directly to your TV for device management, web browsing with Flash support and even HD video playback.
USB 3.0 Connectivity
The USB 3.0 connectivity provides speeds 10x faster than USB 2.0. The USB 3.0 connects digital cameras and smart phones, backs up large external hard drives and extends the capacity of your NAS Server at up to 5 Gbps. The NAS Server's backwards compatibility adds connectivity for USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 devices to get the best combination of speed and universal access.
Acronis True Image
Acronis's advanced backup software comes with a slick interface, user-friendly design and comprehensive features to keep your data safe. You can back up all your data with one-click protection or you can choose only the most important files.
Multiple RAID
The Thecus NAS is versatile. It creates a balance of performance and data protection for multiple RAID volumes each supporting different RAID modes including RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10 and JBOD. In case of a hard drive malfunction, you can change the drive easily with the help of its built-in hot-swap, hot-spare, online RAID migration and expansion, as well as auto-rebuild capabilities.
Multiple File Systems
The Thecus NAS Server can handle different types of environments due to its support for multiple file systems including EXT3, EXT4 and XFS. You can simultaneously use different file systems across multiple RAID volumes to get the best of each one.
iSCSI Thin-Provisioning
You can get fast data transfer with the high speed iSCSI and make wasted disk space a thing of the past with thin provisioning's flexible storage functionality.
iOS/Android Connectivity
The ThecusShare and the Thecus Dashboard helps to manage your NAS Server, upload and download or stream data using an iOS or Android device on the go. This facilitates access to your data from anywhere.
Rsync
Thecus's Rsync functionality gives your NAS server greater flexibility with remote backup capability, a flexible scheduler and the stability of a Linux-based transfer.
User Quotas
You can divide the massive storage of this server among multiple users. User quotas make storage easy to divvy up and manage disk space, for two or even up to 100 users.

Comments about Thecus N5550 5 Bay Enterprise Tower NAS Server:

This NAS is simply unbeatable for the money. No other machine offers the same hardware for anything close in terms of dollars.

Having said that, I am using this nas for home purposes. I have seen some people complaining that it cannot serve multiple users at the same time well. To decide how many users can be handled, look at the hardware spec, and don't expect more than the hardware can do.

For me, the nas is working beautifly. I have coubled it with 3 TB WD Red NAS drives.

The interface could be better, but it is quite usable. Some of the screens have a small window that cannot be resized. For example, the "share folders" screen has a tiny window listing the folders, and I have to scroll through it rather than resize to use more of my screen.

One can easily extend functionality through modules, of which quite a few are available. The mobile apps are so-so, and I don't find them extremly useful.

I've been using USB Drives to backup my data, family photos, videos, documents only to always have a failed USB drive. My brother in law mention this NAS box and I now have it running 3 weeks now, very happy. Ie running a RAID 5 of 10. TB's.

Comments about Thecus N5550 5 Bay Enterprise Tower NAS Server:

        Environment:
Small Business with approximately 25 users.
Even mix of Macs & PCs.
Work with lots of large graphic files.

        Configuration:
        5 - 1TB WD Red Drives, configured for RAID5
        Shipped with 2GB of DDR3 1333

        Opinion:
2GB of memory was wildly insufficient, especially considering the 1gig was reserved for on board video. I consulted the manufacturer's website for instructions on how to disable the onboard video, and reclaim all the memory. This was easily accomplished, however, it did not help very much.
I then added 2GB of additional memory, as the maximum addressable memory for this device is 4GB. This hardly made a difference in the performance of the machine.

While I would certainly say that the N5500 has a great price point and is extremely easy to set up, I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who intends to use it for a workgroup.

Minor complaint - Link Aggregation for the 2 NICs really does not work. Tech support said it only works with certain switches, but could not name a single brand or model that I could purchase in order to get it working.

Major complaint - The unit is severely underpowered. The CPU in this unit is not up to the task of heavy duty I/O. If there were 10 users connected to the shared drive, and, say 1 of them decided to copy 3GB of data over to the NAS, then the other 9 should just go take a "smoke break." While the data copies pretty darned fast…at say, 91MB/s, the N5550's memory and cpu usage gets pretty close to 100% utilization, and all the other users basically have no access to the server during the duration of the file copy.

I tried all of the tips and tricks that their tech support suggested, but in the end, none of it helped.

For reference, I also own a Drobo 5N, and the N5550 was considerably faster in all performance categories, but neither of those devices can be used for the purpose that I hoped they could be.

        Conclusion:
Do not buy this device for your workgroup to use as a file server. If you are looking for somewhere to store a bunch of files that you will rarely ever need to access again, this might be the device for you.

In a home office / single user environment, the N5550 might be a GREAT option.

Comments about Thecus N5550 5 Bay Enterprise Tower NAS Server:

I purchased two of these units with 5 3tb Western Digital RED drives. The unit is easy to install drives in. However it appears that Thecus didn't properly secure the interal flash drive used for the base OS. I was having nothing but problems getting the unit to boot up, and when it did actually boot up none of the setting would save on reboot. Fortunately Thecus support is good and they instructed me to reseat the board. Once this was done everything works properly.

I use one as a MediaCenter the other as a NAS device for shared folders. I have also tried it as a iSCSI target for a Windows 2008 Cluster. The instructions are very lacking as far as setting up certain features of the device. ADS (Windows Active Directory) support is one of them. A quick google search answered that question. MediaCenter is the one thing it does poorly out the box. The problem is the version that you can download automatically has issues with .AVI and .MP4 files. A quick search will allow you to manually download and install a newer version which is better supported.

If you are an experienced computer user with a touch of patience you will be rewarded with a good unit for a decent price.

Comments about Thecus N5550 5 Bay Enterprise Tower NAS Server:

I bought the N5550 to replace an old Buffalo Terastation that had gone crazy and destroyed all the data on my Raid 5!
The N5550 was smaller but supports an additional disk. I loaded it with 4 Western Digital 3TB drives and configured to Raid 5. Performance is amazing with transfer rates at the limit of the Gigabit Ethernet. Setup was a breeze, even on my MAC system which tends to be not so well supported with some of the 3rd party products.
The N5550 has a lot of features beyond what my old system had, but I have yet to explore most of these. However, the main role of any NAS is storage and the N5550 provides plenty of that, with fast access, ease of use and a very attractive package.
The only slight negative is in regards to the help and documentation. The instructions are obviously translated, some ok, some not so good. However, what is missing is guidance on what some of the options do and which should be selected.

Comments about Thecus N5550 5 Bay Enterprise Tower NAS Server:

I was debating between a few different NAS boxes, but ultimately ended up going with the N5550 by Thecus, and I don't regret it at all.

The specs just eclipse the competition at the same price point.

              Pros:
              - Dual Atom CPU
              - 2 GB RAM
              - 5 interal SATA bays + 1 eSATA
              - Dual binded NICs
              - HDMI out
              - RAID 5

              Cons:
              - None so far with the actual product, but the software for the Android system is awful - the iPhone software is so much better - they need to spend some time updating it.
