Comments about Quantum Instruments CoPilot Wireless TTL Flash Controller for Canon:

I have been using this for about three months, and found that it burns through expensive CR123 3V batteries, from my local retail store at $14.99 for two. Especially if it gets turned on in your bag, but even switch off it seems to drain the battery. I started removing the battery when not in use. A better solution is to add rechargeable CR123 3.2V or CR123 3.7V batteries that Quantum support said will work. I went with rechargeable CR123 3.2V batteries. Plus you will need a special charger. I have a Intellcharger i4 by Nitecore about $25 but it works with AA, AAA and CR123 and several others battery types as well.

As for the Co-Pilot I drive three remote Qflashes that I have been using with much success, much better range and control that my old IR Canon Speed light trigger. I seem to use manual mode more than TTL. They both work, but in manual mode I see more change when I adjust then power, as opposed to using TTL and flash composition. I use the Co-Pilot with two Trios and T5d-R with FW7Q attached. For daylight shoots I use the two Trios more because of the high-speed sync. Trios at 80Ws and T5d-R at 150Ws used in a Softboxe that zap power but the bare bulb is better than any speed light in a Softbox and I end up with a portable studio quality light. This configuration gives me lots of flexibility to configure the light for the situation. I still have some stuff in my wish list for light shaping.

This remote trigger is reliable, low cost and light weight. I like the rotary switches that I can move without having to put on my glasses and then get into a menu to adjust my lights. I can switch up 2 or down 3 stops in TTL or go from full power 1/1 to 1/32+ or off in manual mode, right from the camera, even if my lights are hundreds of feet away. My twelve year old T5d-R updated and fix cracked case is ready to server me for many more years and will not shut down because it's over heated.

Comments about Quantum Instruments CoPilot Wireless TTL Flash Controller for Canon:

Used the CoPilot to do some remote flash work and I was impressed. In manual mode you have full control of your remote flashes from a simple switch, each of three groups from 1/1 to 1/32 or off. You can also switch each remote group into TTL mode and control from -3 to +2 stops or off. It seems to send the data as you change the switch and update the remote flashes very fast. The only drawback I found was when I was trying to get my Trio to use High Speed Sync. It seems to get lost some times, I had to dial the CoPilot back down and them back up. Looks like a software glitch that I'm sure that can be fixed with a software update. With a USB port that can be done in the field. I only have two Qflashes the Trio and T5d-R with the radio adapter you end up with full manual control of them in the same group or on their own. Unlike IR from my Canon equipment once you have it set up it fires every time, in full sun and from 300 feet away. The auto focus assist beam works well and you can turn it off if not needed. Still need a cable to drive my T5d-R as a local flash with CoPilot as the brain. It could also use an auto power down if not used, so when you put it back in your bag it saves the battery. With the two flashes I can light up a room and move around and have great light and freedom to shoot at will.

Comments about Quantum Instruments CoPilot Wireless TTL Flash Controller for Canon:

I've been shooting Quantum since 1995, and have had trouble with it from the beginning. The freeXwire system is buggy at best and very inconsistent. I just purchased the CoPilot and it does not work with my T5DR. I called Quantum and they tried to tell me it's my camera, a brand new Canon 7D. Which is the same thing they said about my last 3 Canons. Quantum repair always blames the camera instead of their poorly engineered equipment. Read the blogs and you'll see that everyone is having the same set of problems with Quantum - works sometimes and is very unreliable. And Quantum repair always blames the user instead of fixing their own product. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY on Quantum products! Buy Canon or Nikon flash and use a Radio Popper or Pocket Wizard.

Comments about Quantum Instruments CoPilot Wireless TTL Flash Controller for Canon:

Finally! A remote controller for my Quantum flashes that lets me adjust the power manually. Worked perfectly out of the box. You will need to know which lights are Wireless R1 and Wireless R2 if you are using different outputs for more than one light. Another great Quantum Instruments product.

Comments about Quantum Instruments CoPilot Wireless TTL Flash Controller for Canon:

I have 2 Pilots ( one for each camera) and will now be selling one of them . I love this CoPilot. I can control either combination of Trios or 5D-r from Camera in seconds. Does it do everything a Pilot does? no, but it will control 3 zones in either Manual or QTTL fast and with its small size you don't even feel the extra weight.

Comments about Quantum Instruments CoPilot Wireless TTL Flash Controller for Canon:

The CoPilot does not have all the functions of the Pilot, but it has the essentials. I find it best used on a hand-held camera with multiple Trios on stands, in TTL mode. If, however, one needs to use the Quantum QLink units with Canon Speedlites, one still needs the Pilot to get the full function of the QLink-FreeXWire combination. The CoPilot will only trigger Canon units or other units, using the FreeXWire. So I see the CoPilot as a great addition rather than a replacement for Pilot. The CoPilot will control a lights in three groups. It sets up quickly and flawlessly.
