Comments about Vivitar 500mm f/8 Mirror Lens:

I used it on various cameras as I have T-F and T-E and T-A mount adapters. When I received it, I was quite surprised at lightness of the lens plus its small size. The lens is very well made and does not look like a cheap plastic toy. And then I attached it to my Nikon F as well as Sony A7, secured it atop one of the sturdiest tripods and tried focussing and capturing a well lit test object set at various depths and spread. This is what I found. (1) The lens rarely focuses on the object of interest. (2) There seems to be specific spots in a flat field of view that seems to be in focus. (3) Over the flat field of view there are visible distortions (not chromatic, but spatial). I have never before worked on a reflex lens with distortions. However, if one uses this lens for a long enough period, one might actually learn this lens. My impression is that the mirror(s) is/are at fault. I was a bit surprised that this comes from vivitar which has a few other normal lenses that are classic gems.

found this lens to be compact , clean and with minimal ,if any distortion. excellent for price. of course, would like faster aperture but realistically not practical in this price range. but handy for size, clarity, and economy.

Comments about Vivitar 500mm f/8 Mirror Lens:

This lens is of very high quality and with the adapter works very well with my Pentax K100D.
However, I now have to revert to the old way of manually setting exposure, the way I used to do it on my older Pentax K1000, because this lens is fixed aperture manual ficus. It is an enjoyable trip down memory lane, and I am getting some good telefoto pictures.

Comments about Vivitar 500mm f/8 Mirror Lens:

This lens is fun if you like experimenting with your camera settings. This lens has to be mounted on a tripod or other stabilization device to get the best clarity for enlarging the pictures. I see where image stabiliztion helps when you don't have it. Even on a tripod, you can't enlarge the photos too much as the edges in the image will be blurred; however, the color is pretty good. The magnification is good but the focus is super sensitive making holding this setup still and in focus a challenge. You'll have to play with the shutter speed, and ISO to find your best result. I found it good for close ups of subjects at the bottom of the focal range of about 4'7". I put an extender on the camera and got some really good distant shots with the proper shutter and ISO settings. I'm still experimenting with the lens and will find out what it will do shooting the night sky in the near future. For general photograpy this is a good lens and I believe it will do well. All in all, lens is worth the money. The attached photo of the bird was taken on a cloudy day. The picture of power suppy plug was taken from a little over four feet with direct illumination of a 40 watt bulb. You can even see the dust on top of the plug in the picture. Not bad for the price.
