This EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens from Canon is a welcome addition to Canon's line-up of EF lenses--a light, inconspicuous "normal" lens. At a featherweight 4.6 oz, this is one of the lightest lenses in the EF family. It's less than one inch long, so it will never draw unwelcome attention to you when you're shooting in public. A bright f/2.8 maximum aperture allows you to shoot under pretty much any lighting conditions, and the sophisticated lens configuration, including one aspherical element, guarantees high image quality from the center to the edge of the frame. The optimized coatings used in constructing the lens greatly reduce ghosting and flare, and deliver superb color balance.

STM functionality provides quiet, smooth and continuous autofocus during video operation (continuous video autofocus only when used with the Canon EOS 70D, Rebel T4i and T5i). The circular aperture formed by 7 diaphragm blades combined with the wide aperture can give you beautiful bokeh--the out-of-focus background areas of your images. This 40mm lens will give you a view equivalent to 64mm when used on a camera with an APS-C sensor, and is able to focus as close as 11.81".

Newly developed STM technology for smooth and quiet continuous AF while shooting video (continuous video autofocus only supported with EOS 70D, Rebel T4i and T5i cameras).
Lightweight and unobtrusive 4.6 oz lens is less than one inch long.
Bright f/2.8 aperture is effective in low light situations and provides shallow depth of field focus control.
High image quality from the center to the periphery thanks to its advanced lens configuration including one aspherical element.
Optimized coatings that minimize ghosting and flare while providing exceptional color balance
A circular 7-blade aperture for beautiful soft-focus backgrounds
Short minimum focusing distance of only 11.81"
Mounted on a camera with an APS-C sensor, this lens offers a view similar to a 64mm lens in the 35mm format.

Great lens. Quite sharp. Accurate and fast focus. It's a joy to use. Of course, it delivers in terms of being compact. I'm using it on a 1.6x camera, so it's a somewhat awkward focal length. I look forward to the day I get to use it on a full frame. But you all know it's 40mm, so onward.

The mounting ring is really tight with my camera, and I have this feeling that I'm grinding something down when I mount or remove the lens. I don't think it hurts anything, so that's fine with me.

Unfortunately, the lens data is not pre-loaded on my t4i. But the image quality is so good that you hardly would ever need it. I will include a couple of photos. Both are unedited and were taken with in-camera settings neutral, and sharpness set to 0. The one of the leaf was taken with the lens wide open. You can see how quickly it passes in and out of focus. The background light shows the chromatic aberration about as badly as it ever gets, which is hardly at all! You can just barely see the opposing red vs. green fringe in the light. The one of the flowers is also wide open at 2.8, also neutral and unsharpened and unedited. With even the most light-handed increase of sharpness and contrast, stunningly crisp images, as well as softer ones, are at your disposal, and all at a ridiculously low price. I really like it, and it manages to jostle my other lenses off the camera which, on paper, should have much more versatility and utility.

Another note: The STM focusing is not silent. This is fine with me, but for those of you who might be interested, read on. In AF, there's a soft whine that it gives off, louder than my USM lens but quieter than my kit lens. In manual mode, the focus ring is, as many have pointed out, NOT a mechanically engaged gear, but rather an electronic input. When turning the ring medium to fast, it makes a lower and slightly softer hum. When turning the ring slowly, it makes a rather disturbing groan. However, when you turn it REALLY slowly, the focus moves with an amazingly controlled slow creep, and it's _completely silent_. That could come in handy for some nice cinematic effects.

I got this lens so I could take some more closeup candid photos of family on my 10D. It's been great. The low profile of it makes it more convenient in tight spaces and for carrying around. With its short macro distance I've also been taking some nice pictures of flowers.

The autofocus is a bit slow in my mind, but it's accurate. The lack of a distance meter is not too big of a problem. Its size made me a little wary about screwing it into my camera without breaking it, but it's a solid fit.

Comments about Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens:

I read almost all the feed back I could on this lens and found they were spot on. Love the quality of pictures I took with this lens. Takes a nice portrait, but will be very useful to me in capturing rock art when I do archaeological surveys.

I'm not a pro photographer. I just purchased a full frame camera and wanted this lens for a light weight lens with lower light capability. Have only used it a few times, but I've been happy with the results so far. The price point made this a simple solution for my needs.

I purchased this lens just before traveling to mexico. I currently only shoot prime lenses and I purchased this lens to use while in public places. It's small and easy to conceal, doesn't draw as much attention, and weighs far less than the L-series lenses do.

Comments about Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens:

As I move more towards making my gear lighter, at this price, why not?

This pancake lens is as light as feather, works excellent on my old Canon 50D and when I decide to upgrade to Full Frame (hoping 6D MarkII has a lighter body)I can still use it.

It's sharp and autofocus is fast, only issue is that I had to go one stop down since it seems to over expose in bright sunlight.

Very nice lens to carry for daily shooting but I ended up picking up a 24mm f/2.8 wide angle a few days ago.

The 40mm is more on par with your standard lens but if you are on a budget, ditch the kit lens and put this one on your camera.

This is super thin and very lightweight. The only negative comment I have is that when you adjust focus the lens squeaks a bit. Not the end of the world though.

This prime lens is an excellent bargain.

Comments about Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens:

All purpose lens, great for leaving on the camera as a walk around. Good for street photography, cloe up (it focuses very close). Its so small and light, it looks like a body cap rather than a lens. Super sharp right frpm f/2.8. Super quite. And at the price its an amazing value.

I have been using this lens on both 5D Mark lll and 7D Mark ll as my go to lens for walking about and casual shooting. Balances nicely on both bodies. The lens is sharp, contrast and color are great. This is my first non "L" lens. I'm amazed at the quality/ price point of this compaired to the "L"s. I really like the 60mm focal length that this lens is on a crop sensor camera for head shots.I have nothing but praise for this lens.

I have this lens for the day by day use. I keep it in the camera (6D), so it's easy to carry on all day long in any bag. It's very sharp and sufficiently fast. It could better if it were made in Japan, as well a focus that could move while it's power off, but these points doesn't make it any worse. I heard that there are a white/grey version. It might be stylish.

Comments about Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens:

This is my first prime lens. I am new to the world of DSLR photography [Canon T5i] and I am still learning. I use the 40mm mainly for stills of people.

It is well constructed. The 40mm pancake lens takes sharp photos if you know what you are doing. It does better bokeh than the kit lens due to its F/2.8 It is so tiny to be innocuous. It is very light so it should not strain your neck. It is my go to lens now.

It is no good at video, because it does not have IS. It seems to want to autofocus a lot. The Canon hood looks useless.

I have not had a chance to use it in low light, so I do not know how it would perform.

Comments about Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens:

Usually I am a fan of zoom lenses. I own two Canon L series zoom lenses, the 24-70 f2.8 L and the 17-40 f4.0 L. Sometimes though, I just want a small walk around lens. For the price, I don't think you can find a better lens in this category. The three contenders from Canon are the 35mm F1.4 IS, the new 50 mm f1.8 STM, and the 40 mm f2.8 STM. I considered buying the 35mm because of its fast maximum aperture and image stabilization, but I couldn't really justify the price seeing as I'm not going to use this lens all the time. I also looked at the new 50 mm f1 .8, but I've always felt that 50 mm isn't quite wide enough. The 40 mm is the perfect trade-off in my mind. It's practically disposable at the price you pay, and the image quality is quite good. This lens is extremely lightweight! I can barely feel it on my camera. If I had one complaint, it would be the focus by wire system. While it does function very well, it feels a little strange when you manually focus. Other than that, I think anybody would be happy to have this little lens in their bag.

I use it exclusively on a SL1, and it is almost like having a point and shoot camera. It makes sharp, clear images and the combination makes it fun to shoot, and you could carry it all day without getting tired.

I travel by air frequently and this compact lens is great for a quick trip. Hard to believe how small and efficient it is!
