This EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Pancake Lens from Canon is a welcome addition to Canon's line-up of EF lenses--a light, inconspicuous "normal" lens. At a featherweight 4.6 oz, this is the lightest lens (along with the 50mm f/1.8 II lens) in the EF family. It's less than one inch long, so it will never draw unwelcome attention to you when you're shooting in public. A bright f/2.8 maximum aperture allows you to shoot under pretty much any lighting conditions, and the sophisticated lens configuration, including one aspherical element, guarantees high image quality from the center to the edge of the frame. The optimized coatings used in constructing the lens greatly reduce ghosting and flare, and deliver superb color balance.
STM functionality provides quiet, smooth and continuous autofocus during video operation (video continuous autofocus only when used with the Canon EOS Rebel T4i). The circular aperture formed by 7 diaphragm blades combined with the wide aperture can give you beautiful bokeh--the out-of-focus background areas of your images. This 40mm lens will give you a view equivalent to 64mm when used on a camera with an APS-C sensor, and is able to focus as close as 11.81". If you're looking for a "normal", everyday lens, this is a good place to start.

I used to own the EF 50mm and when i heard Canon is coming out with a Pancake lens i almost cried. Anyway, When i got this lens, i put it on my 5Dmarkii immediately .. it is SMALL i tell ya. i think the Back lens cap is almost the same size as the lens itself. Also, it is a metal mount which made it much more durable i think.
The focus is pretty good, i mean you can't really compare to a "L" series lens but for the price i think it does a pretty good job. The focus is actually must more quieter then the EF 50mm F1.8 for sure. It is pretty decent sharp lens as well,( i just bought one copy of the lens so i can't really compare with other copies ). I tried in the studio as well as outdoor when i was walking around my neighbourhood. The true test would be when i go to backstage for some events in September, then i would know if this is a keeper. the reason why i only gave 4 out of 5 because if the lens is F1.8 or F2.0 would be much better but that's just a wishful thinking. so i recommended it for people to go try it and see don't' take my words for it. GO OUT AND BUY IT. SHOOT IT and OWN IT!

I got this lens so I could take some more closeup candid photos of family on my 10D. It's been great. The low profile of it makes it more convenient in tight spaces and for carrying around. With its short macro distance I've also been taking some nice pictures of flowers.
The autofocus is a bit slow in my mind, but it's accurate. The lack of a distance meter is not too big of a problem. Its size made me a little wary about screwing it into my camera without breaking it, but it's a solid fit.

I've quickly taken to using this as my normal 'walk-around' lens. Fast, quiet focus, sharp, lightweight, very practical. It's small inconspicuous size makes it good for working quietly around people.

Comments about Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Pancake Lens:
This lens is tack sharp. I get great bokeh when I want it. I'm using it on a Rebel T2i which has a cropped sensor. So my focal length is 64mm which I find works for a lot of shots if you are willing to walk around a bit. And the [$] price makes it a no brainer.

Comments about Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Pancake Lens:
This is the lens that stays on the camera. I keep the zoom tucked away for when I need it, but this 40 just seems to do it all. Totally worth the money (actually, worth well more than what they're charging right now so snatch one up before they catch on to what a great product they made!).

4 stars for the plastic body.
Great little lens. I was getting tired of my $100 50mm losing a sharp focus and the color that I was getting through the glass was just not to my liking. This lens has since then replaced my old 50mm. Sure the aperture isn't as open but on a 7D, the 40 gives me just a little wider view and the sharpness is better. The color I get out of it is closer to what I shoot on my A camera with L series lenses.
If you're looking for a "wide" lens for your 7D, this is a great way to go for a cheap price.
Oh and the size, even smaller than the 50mm. Which is crazy.
Love this lens.
Comments about Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Pancake Lens:
its relatively inexpensive so i thought id pick one up. and im glad i did
the performance of this lens is way beyond what i expected.
crisp images and good contrast. can't say ive seen any color fringing
best part about it is its compact size and light weight. its really easy to just grab it and shoot with this focal length it makes for a good walk around.
there are certainly times i dont want to lug around my other lenses, so this is a good replacement.
2.8 is alright, f/2 wouldve been nice. but its adequate enough for most things.
auto focus speed is a bit sluggish, and its annoying how the camera needs to be on for the lens to move. like the barrel, its extended for close focus distances and when i power off i have to turn the camera back on so its not protruding.

Currently on my t4i, used for portrates and street.
I'm this price range I've found nothing that compares, auto focus is still an area of improvement for canon systems but the manual focus build is wonderful and precise.
I was surprised by the build quality of this discrete lense.

I wasn't expecting too much when I opened the box for the first time. Passed the pre-conception one may have when seeing the small size, I was very pleasently surprised by this little lens. Very well build and very sharp and detailed pictures.
Only cons so fare : the AF is not the fastest and actually a bit noisier than I thought. Other than that, this lens has become my body cap on my 6D and something that I bring with me everywhere

Comments about Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Pancake Lens:
I've got a lot of L glass. This is my only non-L, yet may be my favorite lens! Sharp, fast, rapid focusing, quiet, light weight, compact. And did I say 'sharp'? It's the perfect family snapshot lens, because it's so small it doesn't intimidate like my other "big eyes", yet with a max aperture of f/2.8 it's quite decent for low light, and yields attractive background blur. I think this is THE best bargain in the entire Canon lens line. My one real complaint is that the front element seems subject to damage, because the lens will stop focusing if you push it inward just a bit, which I've done inadvertently three times now, while simply putting on the lens cap. It seems to come back OK after cycling power, but it makes me a bit suspicious as to how many of these incidents it will survive. (Would give 5 stars except for this.) I wish it was built a bit more durable & rain safe, but it's so inexpensive that durability hardly matters. If I ever break this I'd instantly buy another. SO HAPPY with this lens!!! :-)

For the money this lens can't be beat - it's not the fastest, but I do a lot of international travel and normally carry a 50mm 1.2 and a 70-200 with me and they get heavy. This does close to the same job as the 50mm and it weighs nothing and takes up almost no space in my bag - and it's so affordable. The images also feel like an old Leica camera from the 50's - great for the instagram generation

I've yet to use this lens on a regular basis, so the jury is still out.
Autofocus is not as quick as with a USM lens, as to be expected, but this reminds me a little of the Canon 50mm 1.8 lens.
