This EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens from Canon is a welcome addition to Canon's line-up of EF lenses--a light, inconspicuous "normal" lens. At a featherweight 4.6 oz, this is one of the lightest lenses in the EF family. It's less than one inch long, so it will never draw unwelcome attention to you when you're shooting in public. A bright f/2.8 maximum aperture allows you to shoot under pretty much any lighting conditions, and the sophisticated lens configuration, including one aspherical element, guarantees high image quality from the center to the edge of the frame. The optimized coatings used in constructing the lens greatly reduce ghosting and flare, and deliver superb color balance.

STM functionality provides quiet, smooth and continuous autofocus during video operation (continuous video autofocus only when used with the Canon EOS 70D, Rebel T4i and T5i). The circular aperture formed by 7 diaphragm blades combined with the wide aperture can give you beautiful bokeh--the out-of-focus background areas of your images. This 40mm lens will give you a view equivalent to 64mm when used on a camera with an APS-C sensor, and is able to focus as close as 11.81".

Newly developed STM technology for smooth and quiet continuous AF while shooting video (continuous video autofocus only supported with EOS 70D, Rebel T4i and T5i cameras).
Lightweight and unobtrusive 4.6 oz lens is less than one inch long.
Bright f/2.8 aperture is effective in low light situations and provides shallow depth of field focus control.
High image quality from the center to the periphery thanks to its advanced lens configuration including one aspherical element.
Optimized coatings that minimize ghosting and flare while providing exceptional color balance
A circular 7-blade aperture for beautiful soft-focus backgrounds
Short minimum focusing distance of only 11.81"
Mounted on a camera with an APS-C sensor, this lens offers a view similar to a 64mm lens in the 35mm format.

Great lens. Quite sharp. Accurate and fast focus. It's a joy to use. Of course, it delivers in terms of being compact. I'm using it on a 1.6x camera, so it's a somewhat awkward focal length. I look forward to the day I get to use it on a full frame. But you all know it's 40mm, so onward.

The mounting ring is really tight with my camera, and I have this feeling that I'm grinding something down when I mount or remove the lens. I don't think it hurts anything, so that's fine with me.

Unfortunately, the lens data is not pre-loaded on my t4i. But the image quality is so good that you hardly would ever need it. I will include a couple of photos. Both are unedited and were taken with in-camera settings neutral, and sharpness set to 0. The one of the leaf was taken with the lens wide open. You can see how quickly it passes in and out of focus. The background light shows the chromatic aberration about as badly as it ever gets, which is hardly at all! You can just barely see the opposing red vs. green fringe in the light. The one of the flowers is also wide open at 2.8, also neutral and unsharpened and unedited. With even the most light-handed increase of sharpness and contrast, stunningly crisp images, as well as softer ones, are at your disposal, and all at a ridiculously low price. I really like it, and it manages to jostle my other lenses off the camera which, on paper, should have much more versatility and utility.

Another note: The STM focusing is not silent. This is fine with me, but for those of you who might be interested, read on. In AF, there's a soft whine that it gives off, louder than my USM lens but quieter than my kit lens. In manual mode, the focus ring is, as many have pointed out, NOT a mechanically engaged gear, but rather an electronic input. When turning the ring medium to fast, it makes a lower and slightly softer hum. When turning the ring slowly, it makes a rather disturbing groan. However, when you turn it REALLY slowly, the focus moves with an amazingly controlled slow creep, and it's _completely silent_. That could come in handy for some nice cinematic effects.

I got this lens so I could take some more closeup candid photos of family on my 10D. It's been great. The low profile of it makes it more convenient in tight spaces and for carrying around. With its short macro distance I've also been taking some nice pictures of flowers.

The autofocus is a bit slow in my mind, but it's accurate. The lack of a distance meter is not too big of a problem. Its size made me a little wary about screwing it into my camera without breaking it, but it's a solid fit.

Comments about Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens:

Canon is clearly paying attention to the improving camera phones, and those who are tired of lugging around their heavier DSLR combos. This is a great little lens to put on my 5DII when I'm heading out with friends, or even just roaming to work. It's able to produce images - that with a bit of work in post - are fantastic.Yes, it's a bit slow in low light, and there are definitely faster focusing lenses. But for the prince, and the incredibly light weight, this is a handy little tool.Just keep in mind, that you're not paying for top notch glass, so don't compare it to L series quality.Very pleased. Thanks!

      Canon 40mm f2.8 stm lens /pancake

      By KTharp

Comments about Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens:

Excellent lens for street photography on a full frame camera. Fast focus, decent bokah ability, small size does not intimidate anyone, your not noticed when using a hand strap and just walking the streets. Recommend uv filter for some lens protection, however hood is not needed. Hood adds nothing except cost and difficulty in handeling I tried it in store & left it there. Colors excellent, corner fall off easily corrected in lens as is aberration or in Photoshop. Tried on 1.6 crop it's to long for street photography my opinion, if using a crop body pick up the 24mm f/2.8 = 38mm and that's perfect. Very low cost and a blast to have on the camera & walk the city streets or at a party etc, easily group selfie hand held - highly recommend for the money / excellent value.

Comments about Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens:

It's the perfect single-length lightweight for this particular trip - I've been able to do macro stuff and scenics, smiles and miles. I can't say it's a 5-star lens all around - but it's performing admirably for it's intended purpose. I use it on a 50d on vacation, and it's miles easier to carry than a heavy zoom. Sure, I lose some functionality, but I just decided that the 40mm was about right for my "usual" style of vacation shooting. The auto-focus hasn't been great at picking out something small (like a spider at 14 inches) amongst the background (greenage), but otherwise flawless. I may just need to adjust my focus points or get used to it or something...

All-in-all, I like the lens and look forward to some great low light footage. Sound isn't an issue because I use external mics anyway.

Take off the battery grip, leave the big flash at home, and you've got a great portable and inconspicuous photo rig. I've used it on my T2i and my 70D. Not as versatile as a zoom as it makes you work for your shot a bit more, but I love this little lens. And for $? Easy decision.

Don't much care for the focus ring and find this lens to work easiest on a tripod when you have time to focus, not sure I would say this is good for catching fast moments. I realize the costs is low, but I still don't like Canon's trend of skimping on the lens hood and a lens bag. It use to be buy a new lens and you were guaranteed a lens hood and lens bag - buying these extras just brings the cost right back up to normal overpriced Canon levels

Yes I would recommend this lens if size and weight were your main concern otherwise go for an IS lens with a nice focusing ring

Comments about Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens:

Bought this lense for street photography with my T2i. Together they make a nice small pair. The stm AF motor is not silent, but I really am not disturbed by AF noise. I prefer that it does make some audible sound to confirm that its doing its job.The viewing angle is kind of interesting. Not as tight as a 50 or as natural as a 35. I often find myself backing up to frame shots. As others have stated, even with iris dilated fully, it is tricky to get the background blurred to be unrecognizeable, such as is easy to do with the 35mm f2 (non USM).It is possible, but you pretty much must be at macro distance to subject. When you do get the background to goop up it is pretty nice. I can get some neat effects, and streetlights and such are not hexagonal for those of you who care. It does seem to easily lose communication with the camera when in mf. I dont know if I turn the focus ring too hard or if I bump the front of the lens as others mention? In case you dont know the MF is just human operated control of the STM gearing.Switching to af then back to mf cures it.I also noticed that it is a bit flatter in contrast than my 35mm or my Rokinon 14mm. But that can be addressed in DPP as can the slight greenish cast. Overall it is okay, with some comprimises. In conclusion I dont like that I get less keepers than with some other lenses. But I am happy with the small form factor and the angle of view. Will be picking up the 24mm when it is available, and hope Canon does a wider lens in the teens.

Comments about Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens:

When thinking about cameras to take on an upcoming vacation, I was seriously considering buying a Micro 4/3rds Mirrorless camera because I was tired of lugging around my 7D with my 24-70 USM L lens. Faced with the prospect of spending $-$ for a decent camera, I found this sweet little lens that essentially halved the wight and bulk of my 7D setup. Now I'm much more comfortable throwing this kit into my backpack and hiking all day. The croopped 60mm focal length fit perfectly into the sweet spot of the 24-70. (Would love to see something wide in a pancake lens from Canon though at some point). The fast focusing STM motor and sharp imagery of this lens makes it a joy to use. f 2.8 is fast enough for most subject matter and light conditions. The shallow DOF allows for nice creamy bokeh but is also flexible enough to take decent landscapes. I would highly recommend this lens (especially for the $$)

When you mount the lens it's so small it doesn't look like you have a lens on. I used it for some street photography, it's sharper stopped down, a fun lens to have in the bag.

Super compact lens. Sharp, quick enough focusing. Certainly not the fastest focusing lens I own, but more than good enough. Great on a full size DSLR, and great on the EOS-M with the adaptor. Nice to have a fast small lens for many common shooting situations.
