I was looking for a new router given that my old Linksys WRT54G (B and G protocols) seemed to be not enough to feed my brand new Apple TV. My selection was simple, I just wanted the best router according to users reviews in several media and websites, so I decided this ASUS device, which is by the way the first ASUS product (besides motherboards) that I try.
I was willing to expend a little bit more than the average, based on the expectation of keeping the device for some years.

When the box arrived I took the time to review it carefully; first of all B&H boxing was excellent, no complains there. It impressed me the quality of the router materials, very nice finishing, the cover is carved in relief with a very elegant design, etc. the attention on the details can be easily noted.

    Installation:
Nothing to say. It took me 6 seconds (I've just changed one router for another)

    About the performance:
Before changing the router, I have installed a free app (speed test from ookla) to measure internet speed on my tablet, so I took speed samples from key spots on my home (bedroom, tv room, home office, backyard, etc) which is from 2 to 30 meters approximately, including solid walls in between; the measure speed was from 19 Mbps down to 11 Mbps (my tablet has only G conection, not N). My internet wired conection is 40 Mbps (supposedly).
After exchange the routers, using the same physical locations for the router installation and tests, the measure speed was 40 Mbps down to 37 Mbps in the backyard. That was amazing! The apple TV now shows full hd programs flawlessly using N protocol, so the objective was achieved!

    Other thoughts:
I was a little bit aside of the new routers technology, so most probably the features this device has are today's standards, however I'd like to mention some features that positively impressed me, for instance the ability to connect an USB HDD or pendrive and have an instant cloud at home, or the ability to create up to 5 independant guess networks with auto-expiration sessions, or the ability to access printers and drives from internet using a free asus domain, or the ability to run 2 protocols simultaneously (B/G and N/AC), etc.etc.etc. I think this router has all features that I know about routers and many others also :-)

I hope this review can help others as I used other's reviews to make my decision (sorry about my english and/or misspellings as this is not my primary language:-) )

I have been using this router for over a month. Although it has a bunch of nice features, such as creating different WI-FI networks (i.e. for guests), Cloud storage, FTP, etc.) the router is not fully Mac compatible (regardless of the Apple icon on the box), all software included with router is PC ONLY, so is the CD that comes with it.The Wi-Fi range is very poor and the signal disappears at merely 15 meters (50 ft) from the router. I live in a very open area with no interference of any sort. Basically it seems to have the same range that my 10 years old router. When it comes to Asus tech support be prepared to be patient... their phone support is very poor and you may need to be on hold for up to 1 hour. Their customer service is even worst... Asus determined that the router transmitters are faulty and need to be repaired, but instead of sending you a replacement router in exchange you have to send your device in, wait for whatever time it takes for them to evaluate it and repair it and finally send it back to you. For a router that is less than 2 months old and cost nearly $[$] one would expect better performance both from the device and the company. It may be that my router came out faulty, but due to their repair policy, which will leave you without a router for weeks, I suggest that you thoroughly check and evaluate the router during the first few weeks so, if needed, you can still return it / exchange it at the store and avoid having to deal with Asus.

Comments about ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless AC 1750 Gigabit Router:

I replaced a Cisco router with this. My main reason was that Netflix was always buffering and my wife was losing patience. This solved the problem and coupled with the EDIMAX Dual Band USB adapter, my internet speeds are lightning fast.It was easy to make a 5G connection. Had a little trouble with the firmware update but product support was fast and solid. Coverage is excellent! I allowed my neighbor to log on and they cancelled their internet service and now we split the cost. We both live in single family homes but fairly close together. You can spend a lot more money for a router but I think this one is hard to beat for the price.

I didn't even get the router set up. The utility install CD is for PC only. I called tech support, was on hold for 15 minutes and got hung up. Called back and was told I needed to directly connect via ethernet to the router. If you have a newer Mac, there is no ethernet port on the laptop. I was told to borrow a PC by tech support. Don't buy this if you have an Apple computer.

Comments about ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless AC 1750 Gigabit Router:

I needed a new router for my home network which includes five devices using WiFi. I purchased the ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless AC 1750 Gigabit Router from B&H. As usual the prices were fair and the services were first class. After reading the negative reviews on that router, I was a bit concerned but purchased it anyway. Very easy to install, but I did make a call to their tech support because I failed to read the instructions. Tech support answered promptly. It was obvious that the support wasn't in the US. However, my problem was fixed promptly even if it felt like my mother was telling me what to do.It is REALLY fast. This is true even though none of my wireless devices are ac standard. My internet download speed is supposed to be 50mb, but I was typically getting 20mb if lucky. With the ASUS, I'm getting 50-60.The coverage is good. I've been able to connect outside from as much as 80 feet. With my old router, I used a repeater. With the ASUS I no longer need it.I'm obviously satisfied and would recommend it. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that I'm not fully sold on their support yet.

Comments about ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless AC 1750 Gigabit Router:

I've easily configured it, and am achieving my max Internet bandwidth over either 2.4 or 5GHz. This on our iMac, Nexus 5, and iPhone 5, and not even using the new AC standard. My previous router was b/g/n and I wasn't able to obtain even half the speed I'm getting now using the same ISP modem. The only thing to point out, is that the router does get a bit hot. It hasn't effected any of its performance, but may be a consideration for some.I wasn't sure whether to buy this router or the newer AC68 model, and I'm glad I went with this one. Its smaller, can lay flat, and is tried-and-tested providing me with the max possible bandwidth my ISP provides (50Mbps) over wifi.

Comments about ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless AC 1750 Gigabit Router:

Used for a home-use network with a various wi-fi devices.

The router is fast and easy to setup, however the only issue I have is it takes longer for our laptops to connect than with our older router. It sometimes takes about 30-60 seconds instead of 3 or 4 seconds.

I wanted a better router than the one from the DSL company. I really like the speeds I am getting and no longer have to re-boot. Very easy to set-up. I would buy this again.

This has replaced my 6 year old wireless router. I now have a signal throughout the house, and I'm able to use both bands. I found the setup easy and have a printer and hard drive connected to the USB ports.

This router replaced my aging NETGEAR WNDR3400. It immediately solved my wifi drop outs, and more than doubled the range. Love the ease of set up, and the 2 USB ports. One I use for shared network SSD storage. This works great for Mac, PC, Blu ray players, SMART TVs, and tablets.

                          Seems fine.
It was getting difficult/impossible to establish or keep a VPN connection. Since I had no problems from a local cafe, I decided to updated my router from an old Verizon g/n donor router in an attempt to fix this.

I am happy to report that now I have no more VPN connection issues and the disconnection frequency is drastically reduced. Since the changes I connect to my office VPN the first time; before it often took three attempts or I couldn't connect at all - sometimes for a couple of days. Now I get disconnected every hour on average - probably less; before the changes the VPN seemed to disconnect every 10-15 minutes.

However, it seemed, for the two to three days I tried this, that most - perhaps all - of this improvement happened when I moved the router ~8 feet: from knee height to head height and to the adjacent wall 4 feet away. I most often access the router from a couch on the opposite side of this wall ~12 feet away. The signal no longer has to go through a file cabinet, and probably less of the couch. Still I was surprised that such a small change in position could make that much of a difference.

Bought this router to replace Asus RT-N16 I've been using for several years with Tomato firmware. Decided that it's about time to start using the new 802.11ac standard. Was pleasantly surprised when saw that wireless link speed on my macbook pro went from 144 Mbit to 1 Gbit basically the same speed I have on my desktop over the wire. Now that I've been using it for over a week the router seems to be very stable: no speed fluctuation, no random disconnects. Can't think of any cons. Great router with a ton of features, solid performance and a good looking design.

A smooth network requires a good router. Connected to two Roku, one WDTV Live, two Nexus 7, three Android phones, two laptops, one PlayStation and two WiFi speakers.

20Mb internet connection. Previous Belkin N450 router caused serious lag during gaming, disappeared after upgrade. Multiple video streams while using WiFi audio, no problem.

One feature I would really love in a firmware update is the a ability to create an alias for each mac address.
