  • Wi-Fi, Ethernet, AirPrint, Cloud Print
  • Automatic Duplex Printing
  • Input Capacity 300 Sheets
  • Monthly Duty Cycle 50,000 Pages
  • Internal Memory 128 MB

The HL-5470DW Wireless Monochrome Laser Printer from Brother features a fast 40 ppm print speed and multiple connectivity options. The printer's high 1200 dpi resolution yields sharp, easy to read text and clear graphics, making it an ideal printer for any office environment. Further, the printer is designed for heavy use with a maximum duty cycle of 50,000 pages/month. The printer's built-in 128 MB of memory means that print jobs are stored in the printer itself, not on your computer where they can slow down your workflow. Should you need more, optional add-on memory is available from Brother for a total of 384 MB.

The HL-5470DW features a high input capacity so you can print more without stopping to reload the tray. The tray's 250-sheet input tray means less time refilling the printer and more time focusing on your work. As your printing needs grow, an optional 500-sheet additional tray can be added to the printer. Print even larger jobs unattended or keep a 2nd commonly used paper type in the printer so you can easily switch between the 2.

The printer's multiple connectivity options are designed to make it easy to print when you need to. In addition to a standard USB 2.0 connection, the printer features wireless connectivity, wired Ethernet connectivity, and compatibility with mobile devices. The printer's Ethernet connectivity lets you connect the HL-5470DW to your router so your whole network (or only those you choose) can share the same printer, helping to cut costs and conserve space. Also available is wireless connectivity so you can connect the printer to a wireless network. Worried about security? The printer features security measures for both wireless and wired connectivity so not only does your data remain secure, but unauthorized users won't be able to print either.

With the proliferation of mobile devices and internet-enabled tablets, it's important to be able to print from your handheld devices. The HL-5470DW is compatible with Brother's iPrint&Scan Apple, Android, and Windows Phone apps, allowing you to print directly from a compatible mobile handset or tablet. Additionally, the printer is compatible with both Google Cloud Print as well as AirPrint.

I like the size, the foorprint, the speed, and the double-sided printing. One reason I bought it was to be able to print from smart phones and tablets as well as wirelessly from laptop. I had some surprises as I got them all going.

I got an education when I tried to print from all the remote devices. I found out that all computers using the printer must have the print driver for this computer installed. I also found that to print from an Android tablet (Samsung), I had to download and install a Brother app from Google Play. No big deal - and it was quick and works ok except you have to go to the app to print instead of printing from whatever app you're in (your e-mail, for example).

Not a huge issue and it may be true of all printers.

The instructions for installing the printer and using it wirelessly and with remote devices were not very comprehensive or and were somewhat incomplete in my opinion.

However, my call to Brother support cleared up the confusing issues of printing from my laptop (must have drivers installed) and printing from a tablet.

Really seems to be working well now that I've cleared up the issues.

The print quality and speed is excellent. The printer seems well built and has had no hiccups with paper handling.

This printer only gets a 3-star review because I had a terrible experience with Brother's support team. They advertise Google Cloud Print, but when I followed the instructions to set it up, it didn't work and gave me a useless error message. The Brother support team tried to tell me it wasn't their problem, then finally admitted that it was, but that they had no way of figuring out what went wrong because the printer does not report any diagnostic information besides "Error". After days of back-and-forth with support, I finally found an online forum of disgruntled Brother printer users who had figured out workarounds for several reasons why Google Cloud Print might not work, which helped me get it working, although not optimally.

So the printer hardware and initial wireless setup (except for CloudPrint) gets 5 stars. I love it. But Brother loses one point for their lousy Google Cloud Print support (there are a lot of gotchas which people have discovered that Brother hasn't done anything to fix), and another for the poor support experience.

I bought the printer for home use and it is used on an occasional basis. I leave it turned on and it remains in the sleep mode when not printing. It took a little effort to follow the set up instructions but was able to complete it in about 20 minutes. I have two iPads and an iMac in the house and they all print effortlessly to the printer. It is extremely quiet in the sleep mode and prints very high quality one or two sided documents from any of our Apple products which are all connected wireless to our router. I really like the quality of the printer and the copies it produces and would recommend this printer to anyone who would like a reliable, high quality and affordable wireless printer.

I needed a home printer that didn't break the bank with equipment or toner pricing. My deal breakers were that it had to be wireless, laser, duplex and decent pricing for supplies.

After much research and price comparison, this one came closest to needs in my price range. It is very noisy, but easy to use and functions well. This website had the best pricing I could find at the time.

It took me 23 minutes (timed) to install this printer in our shipping warehouse. The warehouse manager just stared at me in disbelieve that it was so fast, to install, wire admin and register.

From the first print this has been a thing of beauty in a work environment. IF it can handle a dirty, dusty warehouse in Arizona it can work anywhere.

Comments about Brother HL-5470DW Wireless Monochrome Laser Printer:

I bought this printer to replace an 15 year old TI Postscript laser printer. I thought the wireless and Ethernet connectivity and duplex printing would be a plus and allow me to use the printer with my tablets as well as my other computers. I set it up on the Ethernet connection and used the browser interface to configure the wireless input. The unit switches between the two automatically. I setup my tablets to print wireless while my other computers use the wired network. I was also able to set up printing from a Ubuntu linux laptop. I setup the printer to print duplex, save toner, reduce curl and operate quietly. In it's fastest mode the printer is noisy, but so was the TI. I only have two weeks experience with this printer and have not yet explored all it's features, but so far it is great.

Comments about Brother HL-5470DW Wireless Monochrome Laser Printer:

The installation guide is fantastic and setup was pretty smooth but very time consuming as the software took a long time to recognize that the printer had been plugged into a USB port.

In addition, it was a bit tricky to install the recommended XPS driver for Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Comments about Brother HL-5470DW Wireless Monochrome Laser Printer:

Easy to set up and print wirelessly with pc, ipad, and galaxy phones. It prints super fast and the text comes nicely. I have n't had laser printer at home before. It's so convenient and I'm less worried about ink being dry out when I need printing occasionally.

Comments about Brother HL-5470DW Wireless Monochrome Laser Printer:

I purchased this printer because it seems to be a great value. It has terrific specs, especially the wireless support, considering its cost. But upon receiving it and setting it up, it has demonstrated a fatal flaw. It blows my 20 amp circuit breakers no matter what breaker its on, even when all other loads on that circuit are removed. I'm hoping I just received a dud. I will try to update this review after I get the replacement; I'm going to give this model a second chance. B&H was of course very easy to deal with in the exchange process.
