The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens features a wide to medium tele 3.5x zoom and VR image stabilization. It's an excellent standard lens that can be used for everyday shooting. The 24 - 85mm focal length can cover everything from wide-angle shots to portrait shooting. It lets you shoot up to four shutter speeds slower, thanks to the VR Image Stabilization. And, it affords superior close focusing at 1.25 feet away from every focal length.

In addition to the obvious advantages a reliable everyday lens provides, it also employs a 7-blade rounded diaphragm opening, three aspherical lens elements and one extra-low dispersion ED element. The 7-bladed rounded diaphragm allows for beautiful bokeh and blurred background effects in photos with a shallow depth of field.

Having one ED glass element and three aspherical elements means this lens will provide you and your camera with spectacular image quality, clarity and contrast in every frame you capture. It's suited for all levels
of photography and video capture, from amateur to professional. Plus, it touts features like Nikon's Super Integrated Coating, internal focus, silent wave motor and M/A (manual/auto) focus mode switch.

Three Aspherical Lens Elements
This is another unique Nikon innovation, which virtually eliminates coma and other types of aberration, further improving image integrity
One Extra-low Dispersion (ED) Element
A single ED element offers superior sharpness and color correction by effectively minimizing chromatic aberration - even at the widest aperture settings
Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC)
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating enhances light transmission and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare
M/A (Manual/Auto) Focus Mode Switch
This NIKKOR lens features a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens
Exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM)
A significant innovation in AF lens technology, Nikon's Silent Wave Motor uses ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations-rather than a gear system-to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation
Superior Close Focus
With a superior close range focus, you'll be able to focus to 1.25 feet at every focal length
Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization
Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization, which is tailored to each lens, enables handheld shooting at up to four shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible for dramatically sharper images and HD videos - even in low light
Internal Focusing
All internal optical movement is limited to the interior of the non-extending lens barrel, which allows for a more compact, lightweight construction - as well as a closer focusing distance
Rounded 7-Blade Diaphragm
The rounded 7-blade diaphragm renders a beautiful, natural background blur (Bokeh) at its wider aperture settings

This lens is a very good lens for the money. It is very sharp, accurate color and lightweight. It is my normal walk around lens now. It is accurate and quite fast focusing. The added VR feature is a welcome addition. I have done hand held shots down to 1/3 of a second with this lens with very good results. It is a very good alternative to the much higher priced 24-70 f2.8, but that is a whole difference lens. For the money you pay for this lens, it is more than worth it.

Lens has a lot of light falloff around the edges, and does not go away until stopped down to nearly f8. Quite a bit of distortion at the wide angle end, and at the long end as well. Zoom ring is rather small to grasp with your fingers, and a bit tight to twist. Quite sharp in the center of the images, but slightly soft around the edges even when stopped down.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

This is the first Nikon lens that has not lived up to my expectations completely. The zoom is quite stiff - much more than on my 18- 200mm f/3.5-4.5 VR G DX - and not equally stiff through the range. I have not had a chance to really test the picture quality, but trial shots have been satisfactory for a decent walking around FX lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

I've been using this lens with my D600 for the past year. I've gotten some outstanding shots, but I started to wonder if I'm loosing something on my full frame 24mp. So I rented the flagship 24-70 f2.8 and shot about 1000 shots over a weekend. I'm happy to say that this cheaper Nikon is as good as the more expensive one for 95% of shooting situations. You may not get the glorified corner-corner sharpness, but then again who really needs that all the time? The VR delivers sharper results indoors, and lower noise with lower ISO. The bokeh is high quality, esp 85mm / f4.5. I was expecting dramatically better sharpness, color rendition, and bokeh in the 24-70 f2.8 but I just couldn't find it. On top of that, this lens feels like a feather in your hand, never really weighing down your shooting. The downsides of this lens are massive barrel distortions @24mm, but that can be corrected with one click in Lightroom.

    Under-rated lens for landscapes

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

The main limitation, common to zooms anyway, is distortion if you need to shoot architectural images. But for landscapes the limitation that has been noted is a bit more CA than other competing lenses. However, my copy has very little - less say than my Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8 (which doesn't have a lot). It's also called soft in the extreme corners, but it isn't bad there and really, who but pixel peepers would care? It's a sharp lens. And for landscapes, my use for it, its somewhat slower apertures don't matter. And with the IS, the only reason to need a tripod is to keep the ISO at 100 and the dof up - which is what most landscapes (not to mention many other types of images) need. I suspect I was lucky with my copy but it's a really fine lens for my purposes.
I might add that primes are not very helpful for landscapes. The idea you can use your legs instead forgets three things: the terrain can make that impossible; even if it's possible that may mean an unwanted change in altitude; it also means that the relationships between objects further and away will change. Zooms are best, especially in undulating or hilly terrain, to get the composition you're after.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

I normally rent the 24-70 2.8 for specific projects but found that I needed a reasonably similar economical solution available onsite all the time; this lens fills that need for me.
Its compact, reasonably sharp and the VR offsets the 3.5-4.5 max aperture limitation; works very well hand-held at lower speeds.
Good center sharpness throughout range but not as sharp at edges compared to 24-70; some distortion and vignetting easily auto-corrected in CaptureOne RAW processing.
My main problem using it is how stiff and choppy zoom and manual focus is compared to 24-70; but for the money, I have no complaint.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

I am a retired part-time professional. As I've gotten older, I've found it difficult to lug around heavy pro-grade lenses. I've found some consumer-grade lenses are very nearly equal to the pro lenses and perform very we'll when treated with reasonable care.

I received this lens in a D600 package deal, and, I thought I would sell it, since I already had a Nikon 24-70 f2.8. I tested it carefully against my pro lenses and was surprised how good it was. The sharpness is excellent--slightly better than my 16-35 f4, about equal to my 24-70 f2.8 and almost as good as my 70-200 f4. The VR works great and in many situations more than compensates for the 1 stop less light.

Yes, there is some distortion and some chromatic aberration, but Lightroom quickly makes those non-issues.

And, importantly for me, this lens is MUCH lighter and more compact than the faster lenses or the 24-120 f4. It stays on my camera most of the time and the results are fabulous, especially taking real pictures instead of pictures of lens charts. It's a keeper.

Nice size/weight with a wide range of focal lengths. I've been using a 24-120 lens which has been somewhat heavy to use although it produces excellent quality photos. Looking forward to using this smaller/lighter version although I gave up some focal length. Test pictures look great.

I was amazed at the sharpness n vr of the lens. There was such huge improvement compared to my old lens. Vr also open possibility of shooting at low shutter speed. Excellent buy.

It was said to be sharp, good VR, good zoom range for travel, loaded with distortion and some light fall-off. At the end I decided to go with this lens knowing its limitations. To me the the good-enough image quality, weight, price-peformance are my key criteria for a travel lens.

I used this lens to complement my Zeiss 28mm f/2 on a trip to Europe. To reduce light fall-off and increase overall sharpness, I typically use f/8 or smaller aperture compensate by higher ISO and/or lower shutter speed. Thanks to D600 and VR, I got great results. The pinchcushion distortion is annoying, but I am able to do some level of correction in LR4 but not completely eliminate the distortion. Filter size is 72mm which is not common. I put on a 72-77 stepup ring and use 77mm filters (and 77mm lens cap). It works well for me. VR is very good. I am able to get a stable shot at 1/10 or even slower speed. As I said, I want to use small aperture wherever possible.

Obviously this lens is no match with the Zeiss 28mm resolution and micro contrast, but it is what it is for its price. It is not perfect, but it does well overall in my opinion.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

First copy of this lens I received was back-focusing, but B&H customer service was great on making an exchange. The new lens is focusing properly and is sharp, sharp, sharp. I bought this lens with an eye towards moving up to an FX camera at some point, but in the interim it's a good match with my D3200. It's a decent upgrade from the 18-55 that came with the camera. It could be a little better in low light, overall I'm very happy with it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

When I bought my D610 I nearly spent the extra $500 for a Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 lens. I decided on the Nikon simply because of the cost - I'll get a better lens later. I was very surprised at the overall quality of this lens. Sharp, nice heft, feels well built. Focuses fast. The images it helps produce are just beautiful. This has got to be the best kit lens out there - and I've used a few over the years!

Don't hesitate to get one if you're in the market for a medium zoom like this. It's marvelous!
