The AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens from Nikon is a versatile zoom lens with wide-angle to telephoto perspectives and VR image stabilization for reduction of the blur caused by camera shake. It's ideal as an everyday lens with a compact design, flexible focal range and fast autofocus. And, it affords superior close focusing with a minimum focus distance of 1.25' from every focal length. Designed for FX format DSLRs it is also compatible with DX-format cameras on which it provides the 35mm focal length equivalence of 36-127.5mm.

Reliable, fast and near-silent auto focus is afforded by the Silent Wave Motor and internal focus system in which only the internal lens groups shift during focus maintaining the compact length of the lens. The M/A Switch mode enables immediate manual focus override for precise critical focus when needed.

In addition to the obvious advantages this versatile lens provides, it also employs a 7-blade rounded diaphragm, three aspherical lens elements and one extra-low dispersion ED element. This optical design controls chromatic aberrations and spherical distortion throughout the zoom range. Also Nikon's Super Integrated Lens Coating reduces ghosting and flare and heightens contrast.

Versatile Zoom Lens
With wide-angle to portrait length telephoto capability and a compact build, this is an effective lens for day-to-day carry and useful in many situations. On DX-format cameras it provides a 36-127.5mm focal length equivalence.
Exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM)
A significant innovation in AF lens technology, Nikon's Silent Wave Motor uses ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations-rather than a gear system-to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation
Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization
Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization, which is tailored to each lens, enables handheld shooting at up to four shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible for dramatically sharper images and HD videos - even in low light
Three Aspherical Lens Elements
The inclusion of aspherical elements virtually eliminates coma and other types of aberration, further improving image integrity
One Extra-low Dispersion (ED) Element
A single ED element offers superior sharpness and color correction by effectively minimizing chromatic aberration - even at the widest aperture settings
Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC)
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating enhances light transmission and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare
M/A Focus Mode Switch
This NIKKOR lens features a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens
Superior Close Focus
The minimum focus distance is just 1.25' at every focal length
Internal Focusing
All internal optical movement is limited to the interior of the non-extending lens barrel, which allows for a more compact, lightweight construction - as well as a closer focusing distance
Rounded 7-Blade Diaphragm
The rounded 7-blade diaphragm renders a pleasing, natural background blur at its wider aperture settings

This lens is a very good lens for the money. It is very sharp, accurate color and lightweight. It is my normal walk around lens now. It is accurate and quite fast focusing. The added VR feature is a welcome addition. I have done hand held shots down to 1/3 of a second with this lens with very good results. It is a very good alternative to the much higher priced 24-70 f2.8, but that is a whole difference lens. For the money you pay for this lens, it is more than worth it.

I got this lens from B&H and tested out on a D7000 Nikon body. I don't have FX yet. It's very sharp but watch out for a very stiff zoom ring (too stiff). This was the case with my copy. I am sending mine in for an exchange. Nikon both by phone and email support says that the zoom ring should not be that tight. It's tighter than any lens I've ever bought and I've bought many Nikon lenses. I hope that the replacement has no decentering or zoom problems. Quality control in this case seems to be a shot in the dark with this lens, judging froom previous review here and my experience. If I get a good copy I'll be really happy with it. Resolution in my first copy was superb. Hope the replacement does not disappoint.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

I have 24-70/2.8g but its size and weight limits its everyday use. Picked up this lens mainly for its relatively small size and weight. Too my surprise this lens performs much more than what I expected initially. It's super sharp by f/9 - there is no difference in sharpness between the two. The zoom right on my copy is little tight between 24mm and 35mm but my 24-70 had even tighter zoom right throughout. My 24-70/2.8 has better distortion control; but, distortion can be corrected if you shoot digital and do post. I use this lens for both still and motion.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

For the money this lense is very good. Is not as sharp as the best Nikon lenses, but is costs only a fraction of their price. It has some noticeable barrel distortion at the wide end. Other than that it is pretty nice basic lense.

The 24-85mm lens is a great carry around lens for the d750. All my shots have been on target and the lens is light. The only problem is when used all the way on the wide side, there is some distortion...so I don't push my limits !

This is the first Nikon lens that has not lived up to my expectations completely. The zoom is quite stiff - much more than on my 18- 200mm f/3.5-4.5 VR G DX - and not equally stiff through the range. I have not had a chance to really test the picture quality, but trial shots have been satisfactory for a decent walking around FX lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

I've been using this lens with my D600 for the past year. I've gotten some outstanding shots, but I started to wonder if I'm loosing something on my full frame 24mp. So I rented the flagship 24-70 f2.8 and shot about 1000 shots over a weekend. I'm happy to say that this cheaper Nikon is as good as the more expensive one for 95% of shooting situations. You may not get the glorified corner-corner sharpness, but then again who really needs that all the time? The VR delivers sharper results indoors, and lower noise with lower ISO. The bokeh is high quality, esp 85mm / f4.5. I was expecting dramatically better sharpness, color rendition, and bokeh in the 24-70 f2.8 but I just couldn't find it. On top of that, this lens feels like a feather in your hand, never really weighing down your shooting. The downsides of this lens are massive barrel distortions @24mm, but that can be corrected with one click in Lightroom.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

The main limitation, common to zooms anyway, is distortion if you need to shoot architectural images. But for landscapes the limitation that has been noted is a bit more CA than other competing lenses. However, my copy has very little - less say than my Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8 (which doesn't have a lot). It's also called soft in the extreme corners, but it isn't bad there and really, who but pixel peepers would care? It's a sharp lens. And for landscapes, my use for it, its somewhat slower apertures don't matter. And with the IS, the only reason to need a tripod is to keep the ISO at 100 and the dof up - which is what most landscapes (not to mention many other types of images) need. I suspect I was lucky with my copy but it's a really fine lens for my purposes.
I might add that primes are not very helpful for landscapes. The idea you can use your legs instead forgets three things: the terrain can make that impossible; even if it's possible that may mean an unwanted change in altitude; it also means that the relationships between objects further and away will change. Zooms are best, especially in undulating or hilly terrain, to get the composition you're after.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

I normally rent the 24-70 2.8 for specific projects but found that I needed a reasonably similar economical solution available onsite all the time; this lens fills that need for me.
Its compact, reasonably sharp and the VR offsets the 3.5-4.5 max aperture limitation; works very well hand-held at lower speeds.
Good center sharpness throughout range but not as sharp at edges compared to 24-70; some distortion and vignetting easily auto-corrected in CaptureOne RAW processing.
My main problem using it is how stiff and choppy zoom and manual focus is compared to 24-70; but for the money, I have no complaint.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

I am a retired part-time professional. As I've gotten older, I've found it difficult to lug around heavy pro-grade lenses. I've found some consumer-grade lenses are very nearly equal to the pro lenses and perform very we'll when treated with reasonable care.

I received this lens in a D600 package deal, and, I thought I would sell it, since I already had a Nikon 24-70 f2.8. I tested it carefully against my pro lenses and was surprised how good it was. The sharpness is excellent--slightly better than my 16-35 f4, about equal to my 24-70 f2.8 and almost as good as my 70-200 f4. The VR works great and in many situations more than compensates for the 1 stop less light.

Yes, there is some distortion and some chromatic aberration, but Lightroom quickly makes those non-issues.

And, importantly for me, this lens is MUCH lighter and more compact than the faster lenses or the 24-120 f4. It stays on my camera most of the time and the results are fabulous, especially taking real pictures instead of pictures of lens charts. It's a keeper.

Nice size/weight with a wide range of focal lengths. I've been using a 24-120 lens which has been somewhat heavy to use although it produces excellent quality photos. Looking forward to using this smaller/lighter version although I gave up some focal length. Test pictures look great.

I have been using 18 -70 mm f 3.5 4.5 which came as kit lens with old D70. I kept on using it since it was a very good lens till recently when I upgraded to 24-85 mm with vr. I was amazed at the sharpness n vr of the lens. There was such huge improvement compared to my old lens. Vr also open possibility of shooting at low shutter speed. Excellent buy.
