The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens from Nikon is an all-purpose zoom lens capable of shooting wide angle to super telephoto focal lengths. This lens has a zoom range of 18-300mm, which provides the 35mm focal length equivalent of 27-450mm in the DX format, making it useful in a wide range of shooting situations.

The lens utilizes a Silent Wave Motor enabling quick, quiet auto focusing for photo and video as well as an internal focusing system that keeps the lens design compact. Also, second-generation Vibration Reduction technology optically stabilizes the image to reduce the effects of camera shake and movement providing the equivalent of up to 3.5 additional shutter speed stops.

Helping with image quality are three aspherical and three extra-low dispersion glass lens elements that will minimize aberrations and lend to overall image clarity and color accuracy. Nikon's Super Integrated Lens Coating reduces flare and ghosting and the lens has 9 rounded diaphragm blades for smooth out-of-focus areas and a 77mm front filter thread.

The Silent Wave Motor autofocus system uses ultrasonic vibrations-rather than a gear system-to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.
The second generation Vibration Reduction II image stabilization improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake for up to 3.5 stops of blur-free handheld shooting.
Maximum magnification of 0.32x and a minimum focusing distance of 1.5'.
Lens construction consists of 19 elements in 14 groups.
Works on FX-format cameras in DX crop mode.
Utilizes 9 rounded diaphragm blades for smooth out-of-focus areas.
The three extra-low dispersion (ED) glass elements help by minimizing the effects of chromatic aberrations and maintaining optimal sharpness and contrast of the lens.
Three aspherical lens elements reduce coma and other aberrations as well as correct distortion and help keep the lens design smaller and lighter.
Super Integrated Coating nearly eliminates ghosting and reduces flaring, maintaining a crisp image throughout the frame.
A-M switch locks the focus ring during autofocus while still allowing manual focusing when the ring is turned.
The Zoom Lock Switch secures the lens barrel at its minimum focal length, preventing the lens from accidentally extending.

This is the best DX format walk-around zoom lens I have used. I have owned it now for 5 months and I have taken over 3000 photos with it. It is a keeper in my book, though at first I was compelled to search for a zoom with range after noticing some images from the D7100 were soft. Some images can be reasonably sharp, too. Better mastery of the camera will produce better results. I will be trying the new Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM soon, but I still need a zoom with reach. So far, this is the best option I am finding in the DX format.

There is noticeable distortion at 18mm, which should be no surprise. Below are some images. Below is the same photo taken at 18mm. The first image shows the distortion and the second image shows lens corrections (and other adjustments) using Lightroom 5.

Lightroom 5 overcomes the limitations of the lens I have discovered so far.

The image stabilization works as advertised and has saved some images in low-light.

I'm reading very good reviews about this lens and am wondering if I got a bad copy, but found it soft from around 18-50 and from mid 200's to 300. It's also quite heavy and a little slow. Best to use outdoors or in a sunny place if you're not using a speedlight. Consider the weight of this lens vs. the 18-200 VRII if you're planning on carrying it around all day on a trip. I was hoping this would be my "fun lens," but that's not the case. It's the first lens I've ever returned. For now I'll stick with my 18-200, 70-200 and primes.

I use this lens for everything except portrait photography. The picture quality is so sharp even while zooming all the way out. This is a heavy lens but after carrying it for a while my neck muscle looks good.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

This is an excellent all around zoom lens. It performs extremely well. Surprisingly, in low light conditions, colors were well-corrected. It is a slight bit heavy, but otherwise is excellent especially for travel photography which I do a lot.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I've only used the lens a few times; playing with it, trying to get to know it, but I think it's going to be great. I'm an amateur photographer and bought it for my trip to South Africa. I'm going to work at the Big 5 Animal Reserve and want to get some great close up shots of the animals. I have a belt that holds the camera close to my body -- and I've gone on five mile walks with it, and it's not as heavy as some of my other lenses. It's small enough that it doesn't bounce around. The photos I've shot have been as clear as can be. There is a very slight vignetting on the edges, but if it's bad, I'll just cut that part of the picture off. It was so slight that I do not see a problem. It is unbelievable how close I can bring something into focus. The wide angle is what I wanted. I'm very excited for my trip. This will be the only lens that I will need over there. I am going to baring another lens with me, but I don't anticipate needing it. I recommend this lens.

I bought this lens for a variety of situations ranging from wildlife pictures to landscapes. The picture quality is excellent. I have found the camera lens is very responsive at low light levels. I have found the lens works well at evening with diminished light, etc. I purchased the lens as a general purpose lens at exceedes my expectations.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

On a recent trip to New Zealand, I took my D7100, DX Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8, DX Micro-Nikkor 40mm f/2.8 and my Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD. While there, I got debris on the sensor when changing lenses, and I missed an opportunity to photograph penguins on a beach when I took only the 17-55mm on a boat trip. So when the DX Nikkor 18-300 f/3.5-5.6 ED VR went on sale recently, I decided to give it a try.

As others have reported, this lens is heavy. But when paired with my D5200 body, the total weight is actually a bit less than the D7100 paired with the 17-55 f/2.8. And the lens does appear to be durable.

Using this lens in place of the Tamron 70-300mm requires some compromise, since this is a DX lens while the Tamron is an FX. So the field of view with the 18-300 at 300mm is similar to that of the Tamron at 250mm (on a DX-format body). Not a show-stopper but something to consider.

From the 70mm focal length and longer, the minimum aperture is 5.6 so you need plenty of light. Hence, at the wider end, the 18-300mm is not going to make me forget my excellent 17-55mm f/2.8. But the 18-300 performs pretty well at the wide end with adequate light. Distortion is easily corrected in Lightroom.

While not a macro lens, the 18-300mm does have an impressively short minimum focus distance, which makes it feasible for me to leave my macro lens at home.

In summary, while the individual lenses perform better in their ranges of intended use, the 18-300mm lens will certainly keep my sensor cleaner and lighten my load while traveling.

I got this lens to replace a Sigma 18-200 for my Nikon. It focuses faster, the VR is quieter, and seems to produce a sharper image. Not to mention that it goes all the way to 300mm. It is a bit heavier than the Sigma 18-200 but it feels solid and is worth the extra weight for the improvements.

My husband and I travel and photograph together. Last year I bought him this lens, and I focused on using my "good" lenses. It only took about 3 days into our travels for me to be constantly reaching for his camera...seemed like I always had the "wrong" lens on for what I wanted to shoot. When we decided to upgrade one of the camera bodies, I added this lens to the kit, knowing that we have a 3 week trip to Italy right around the corner. Will I still take my "good" lenses? Probably...but I'm willing to bet this is the one that'll be on my camera 99% of the time!!

Although a little heavy this quality lens allows me to point and shout nearly every shot without changing a lens. Glass is pure perfection.

Upgraded from my Tamron lense, that is an understatement. The Nikon gear is light years ahead of what I was using. Hence, I also bought the D7100...money well worth spent. Auto focus is rapid and camera use is mega easy.
Needless to say I'm very please with this purchase.
Nikon stands behind their gear. My film Nokon 8008S failed to rewind as a result of a trip to the Solomon Island and my pics in the jungle, yup Nikon fixed it FREE and it was well after the warrantee. I'm a loyal Nikon user.

This is a good all-around lens for everyday photography - but only if you're not too demanding. It's quite soft at maximum focal length and in low light and noticeably distorted at minimum focal length. Do not see much difference at the upper range using VR or not. Does produce very nice results in the middle and in bright light, though. Also, well-built and autofocus is fast. It beats carrying around a bag of lenses if you're just taking pictures to remember your vacation by. But it might disappoint if you're doing professional work or if you're demanding about the quality of your results. Unfortunately, in this day and age, a better lens is going to cost a LOT more money. So, you compromise. This is a good compromise.

While it is a bit heavy, it is still lighter than carrying 2 to 3 other lenses along that might overlap to accommodate an equivalent range. Plus I prefer not to change lenses in the field due to dust concerns. This lens will help minimize changes. I think it will become my favorite general purpose lens. The weight might inspire me to use my tripod more which is usually a good move for me to gain higher quality images.
