The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens from Nikon is an all-purpose zoom lens capable of shooting wide angle to super telephoto focal lengths. This lens has a zoom range of 18-300mm, which provides the 35mm focal length equivalent of 27-450mm in the DX format, making it useful in a wide range of shooting situations.

The lens utilizes a Silent Wave Motor enabling quick, quiet auto focusing for photo and video as well as an internal focusing system that keeps the lens design compact. Also, second-generation Vibration Reduction technology optically stabilizes the image to reduce the effects of camera shake and movement providing the equivalent of up to 3.5 additional shutter speed stops.

Helping with image quality are three aspherical and three extra-low dispersion glass lens elements that will minimize aberrations and lend to overall image clarity and color accuracy. Nikon's Super Integrated Lens Coating reduces flare and ghosting and the lens has 9 rounded diaphragm blades for smooth out-of-focus areas and a 77mm front filter thread.

The Silent Wave Motor autofocus system uses ultrasonic vibrations-rather than a gear system-to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.
The second generation Vibration Reduction II image stabilization improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake for up to 3.5 stops of blur-free handheld shooting.
Maximum magnification of 0.32x and a minimum focusing distance of 1.5'.
Lens construction consists of 19 elements in 14 groups.
Works on FX-format cameras in DX crop mode.
Utilizes 9 rounded diaphragm blades for smooth out-of-focus areas.
The three extra-low dispersion (ED) glass elements help by minimizing the effects of chromatic aberrations and maintaining optimal sharpness and contrast of the lens.
Three aspherical lens elements reduce coma and other aberrations as well as correct distortion and help keep the lens design smaller and lighter.
Super Integrated Coating nearly eliminates ghosting and reduces flaring, maintaining a crisp image throughout the frame.
A-M switch locks the focus ring during autofocus while still allowing manual focusing when the ring is turned.
The Zoom Lock Switch secures the lens barrel at its minimum focal length, preventing the lens from accidentally extending.

This is the best DX format walk-around zoom lens I have used. I have owned it now for 5 months and I have taken over 3000 photos with it. It is a keeper in my book, though at first I was compelled to search for a zoom with range after noticing some images from the D7100 were soft. Some images can be reasonably sharp, too. Better mastery of the camera will produce better results. I will be trying the new Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM soon, but I still need a zoom with reach. So far, this is the best option I am finding in the DX format.

There is noticeable distortion at 18mm, which should be no surprise. Below are some images. Below is the same photo taken at 18mm. The first image shows the distortion and the second image shows lens corrections (and other adjustments) using Lightroom 5.

Lightroom 5 overcomes the limitations of the lens I have discovered so far.

The image stabilization works as advertised and has saved some images in low-light.

I'm reading very good reviews about this lens and am wondering if I got a bad copy, but found it soft from around 18-50 and from mid 200's to 300. It's also quite heavy and a little slow. Best to use outdoors or in a sunny place if you're not using a speedlight. Consider the weight of this lens vs. the 18-200 VRII if you're planning on carrying it around all day on a trip. I was hoping this would be my "fun lens," but that's not the case. It's the first lens I've ever returned. For now I'll stick with my 18-200, 70-200 and primes.

Although a little heavy this quality lens allows me to point and shout nearly every shot without changing a lens. Glass is pure perfection.

Upgraded from my Tamron lense, that is an understatement. The Nikon gear is light years ahead of what I was using. Hence, I also bought the D7100...money well worth spent. Auto focus is rapid and camera use is mega easy.
Needless to say I'm very please with this purchase.
Nikon stands behind their gear. My film Nokon 8008S failed to rewind as a result of a trip to the Solomon Island and my pics in the jungle, yup Nikon fixed it FREE and it was well after the warrantee. I'm a loyal Nikon user.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

This is a good all-around lens for everyday photography - but only if you're not too demanding. It's quite soft at maximum focal length and in low light and noticeably distorted at minimum focal length. Do not see much difference at the upper range using VR or not. Does produce very nice results in the middle and in bright light, though. Also, well-built and autofocus is fast. It beats carrying around a bag of lenses if you're just taking pictures to remember your vacation by. But it might disappoint if you're doing professional work or if you're demanding about the quality of your results. Unfortunately, in this day and age, a better lens is going to cost a LOT more money. So, you compromise. This is a good compromise.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

While it is a bit heavy, it is still lighter than carrying 2 to 3 other lenses along that might overlap to accommodate an equivalent range. Plus I prefer not to change lenses in the field due to dust concerns. This lens will help minimize changes. I think it will become my favorite general purpose lens. The weight might inspire me to use my tripod more which is usually a good move for me to gain higher quality images.

Just retired and purchased a Nikon D7100 and wanted just one lens when traveling. Before purchasing, I borrowed one from a friend and liked everything about it, speed of focusing and image. I like the quality of build and don't mind the weight. This fits my need for versatility.

I bought this as a "travel lens" and I am very happy with the few photos I've taken so far with it. Most of the photos were shot at F11 at various speeds and focal lengths while the camera was mounted on a tripod. Every one came out tack sharp. The lens is a bit heavy, but that's a compromise I'm willing to live with rather than missing a shot while I'm changing lenses.

I'm an amateur photographer and I specialize in baseball photography so I needed a lens that could really be an all in one on a college kid budget. This lens really does fit my needs and I do recommend it. It is pretty heavy (which I expected) but I will be using a monopod with it to keep my action shots as sharp as possible. Anyways, I'm satisfied!

I've been using the Nikon 18-200 for years and decided to buy the older version of the 18-300 as I was told the glass was better and also the lens because of the slightly longer barrel and oh what a joy to use since snapping the very first shot with it! Tack sharp at both ends .. only positive things to say about it. You will love using it and it's not all that heavy compared to a 150-500 or 150-600 or f/2 80-200 lens. The convenience of only having to carry one lens instead of the 18-200 and 70-300 makes it worth every shot!

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I wanted to upgrade my kit lens (18-55 & 55-200 combo) when I was up at the Griffin Observatory trying to photograph the landscape and the birds flying around it and having to change my lenses back and forth in a crowd was not fun at all.

I knew I was not going to FX in the future (sold $0 worth of pictures so far) so I stayed with the DX line. Since I already own a 10-24 with the 77mm thread, it made sense to me to stick with that size filter.

At first I did not believe a lens with this kind of range would give me something satisfactory and I might have to settle with picture quality like a P&S. But it has prove me wrong over and over again.

If you are looking for professional grade images, then look elsewhere. But if you want a general do-it-all lens that doesn't require you to carry two of three lenses (although it weights about the same) then look no further.

We live in the mountains. I can shoot someone sitting across from me on the porch then take a shot out to the far mountains. The range is perfect.

Bought this lens to give me reasonably solid performance for close-up, wide-angle, and medium telephoto shots--wildlife, scenery and flowers primarily during daylight. Trying to cut my travel bag weight way down and leave three lenses at home. Autofocus is silent and very fast. Heavier than my old close-up and wide angle but 2 pounds lighter than my telephoto, so weight not a problem when hand-held shooting moving objects/birds. Excellent close-up clarity. Wide angles look good. End range telephoto a little soft. Tested throughout day from early sunrise to near sunset--worked well. Not tested in very low-light yet. Will be taking on a month-long trip to CO/NM and really run it through the wringer. But for now, this lens is a keeper and worth the price.

I'm a travel photographer and the owner exotic travel company. Years ago I purchased a Nikon D200 kit with the 18-200mm f/5.6 lens. I have purchased numerous Nikon bodies since then, and even a 80-400mm lens (for Africa big game and bird photos )––the 18-200mm though, has always been favorite go to lens. For my needs Nikon super zooms really fill the bill for my work. I recently purchased the Nikon 18-300mm f/5.6. Perfection is a word I don't use much. In the case of the 18-300mm f/5.6, perfection really describes this lens––razor sharp images, solid––for a 77mm lens the weight is very reasonable––excellent optics and construction, amazing focal range. With the growing weight constrictions on all airlines, you couldn't ask for a better all around lens.
