Comments about HP / Hewlett Packard ENVY 17-3270NR 17.3" Notebook Computer (Nero Black/Natural Silver):

I bought this computer about a month ago and so far it has been a good investment. The hardware is all top of the line and roughly on par with most $1,500+ gaming notebooks, the exception being the GPU. The Radeon 7000 series GPU, which is enough to run most graphics intensive programs with ease, is the only piece of hardware that might limit framerates in graphics intensive games.

In my opinion, the sleek product design and relativly thin, lightweight chassis of the Envy 17 is one of it's best selling points and sets it apart from other computers in it's class. Despite the slightly inferior GPU, this computer is far more practical for everyday use than a behemoth gaming rig. For a 17-inch notebook, it is remarkably portable. Also, the beats audio brand has installed a great sound system (for a notebook), including a small subwoofer mounted in the frame. My favorite aspect of the beats system is the physical volume knob on the side of the chassis. As a music producer, it makes leveling very easy.

The HD display is crystal-clear and notably brighter than my old computer. Makes for vivid videos and games.

The keyboard has a number pad and a backlighting system, which is common for most laptops at this size and price range, but it is helpful nonetheless. Also, the trackpad the best one I've ever used. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be navigating web pages and scrolling with swipes of your fingers. It's really easy.

The compuer is equipped with an HD webcam and an excellent interior microphone that makes skype and other video calls more enjoyable.

Now for the bad stuff (but don't worry too much).

The #1 thing that dissappointed me about this computer was an aspect of the sound card and beats software. An "Auto-leveling" "sound enhancement" makes music almost unlistenable to any audiophiles, or anyone with functional ears for that matter. It makes the volume of songs swing wildly depending on the percieved volume. For example, a sound that starts off without a bassline seems very loud, but when the bassline starts, the perceived volume increases and the software automatically lowers the overall volume of the song, making it seem very quiet during bass-intensive parts and very loud during treble-intensive parts. It's a lot like really bad audio compression, and you cannot turn it off without editing the registry to disable the EQ aspect of the beats audio software. Maddening. Hopefully the sound card drivers will be updated soon to include a fix for this, and frankly, i'm surprised it passed product testing.
Other than this issue, I have encountered no cons that are specific to this computer.
