If you have a Nikon camera with a smaller-size APS-C sensor and F mount, then the 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM from Sigma is an incredibly versatile lens that is a real jack-of-all-trades lens you can carry in any situation. With a focal length spanning from a wide-angle 18mm up to a 250 mm telephoto zoom, with macro capabilities to boot, Sigma's 18-250mm could easily be your camera's first all-in-one lens, or a great replacement for several smaller lenses that you're looking to consolidate.

Sigma redesigned the optical and structural design of this lens in order to achieve a relatively compact size, at 4.0" long, as well as a close minimum focusing distance of 13.8" for macro photography. Their Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) construction maintains the structure of the lens, with little variation despite changing temperatures. The lens also incorporates a brass-made bayonet mount, to further reinforce the lenses durability and resistance to wear and tear over time.

The minimum focusing distance is the same throughout the focal length of the entire zoom range, and provides a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9. As an added benefit over fixed focal length macro lenses, the size and framing of subjects can quickly and easily be adjusted by rotating the zoom ring. For even further convenience, at each focusing distance on the side of the lens barrel, the maximum magnification ratio is also displayed.

The 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM has been built with Sigma's exclusive Optical Stabilizer (OS) function. This provides approximately 4-stops of effective camera correction, allowing for lower-light shooting, or greater sharpness in adequate lighting situations. This benefit is even carried into the macro range of photography, where the slightest bump or blur could easily ruin an image. This stabilizer is also adaptive to moving subjects, detecting your movement as you pan the camera and lens, offering effective correction there as well.

For high image quality, you know you've got to have high quality glass, and Sigma has incorporated their Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass element into the 18-250mm. In addition to the SLD element, three aspherical lenses, including a double-sided aspherical lens, have been used in the lens' construction--offering excellent correction of color aberration, for better clarity and quality of images throughout the zoom range.

A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been employed to reduce flare and ghosting with this lens. This makes it resistant to strong incident light, such as backlight behind a subject, providing sharper, high contrast images even shooting into a light source. To prevent internal reflections from occurring, the included petal-type lens hood can be attached in order to block out extraneous light.

For a lens that offers a wide-angle to telephoto focal length, the ability to zoom-in with macro photography, and provides Optical Stabilization built-in, Sigma's 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM made for Nikon cameras is more than a match. Whether you're on a macro product shoot, a walk in the park, or have a wedding to go to, this lens will help you shoot high quality images in any situation.

Possibilities as Wide as its Zoom Range
Going from an 18mm wide-angle lens in the park, to an 85mm portrait lens at a wedding, and later attaching a heavy 250mm lens for wildlife or sport photography means you'll have to carry pounds of gear around with you, by hand or on your back, all day long. With the 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM, you won't have to risk dust entering your Nikon camera body, dropping one of your lenses as the bride's aunt runs into you with a glass of wine, or fumbling to switch to your zoom lens as you watch an eagle soar away--missing opportunities because you had the wrong lens at the time
In Close, or Wide Open
Not only is the zoom range excellent for a variety of situations, but the focus range is also conducive to macro photography--with the added benefit of zooming in on the tiniest textures or creatures. With a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9 you can get an up-close and personal shot of the petals of a flower, then immediately zoom out and catch a group photo before anyone blinks
Compact Construction
Incorporating double-sided aspherical lenses, and redesigning the lenses construction, Sigma has made improvements in keeping this lens at a relatively compact size, yet still achieving an outstanding zoom range. The filter thread diameter has been reduced to 62mm--while, with a 13x zoom range, the length of the lens still remains a mere 3.4" long
Tough Exterior, yet Quality Interior
While the design and construction of the lens has kept it relatively compact, the new Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material has been used to keep it strong and resistant to weathering effects. In addition, a brass made bayonet mount reinforces the strength applied to the surface of the lens. The combination of these features leads to reduced contractility with changing temperatures, a higher quality of lens construction, and allows for slimmer parts to be used--keeping it compact and strong
Holding Steady
Sigma has incorporated their unique Optical Stabilizer (OS) function that offers effectively 4-stops of correction. This makes it possible to compensate for camera shake even in the close-up macro range of photography where a small blur can be detrimental to an image. Even when photographing moving subjects, such as those in sports, the OS function automatically detects the camera's movement and offers effective correction for potential camera shake. The stabilizer's effectiveness does gradually decrease as the shooting distance becomes shorter, however, and is not available on Sony or Pentax camera mounts
Flares, Aberrations, and Ghosting. Oh my!
Everybody says you should invest in your glass, and Sigma's 18-250mm provides just the way for you to do that. With three Aspherical glass elements that offer correction for distortion. Four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements that provide optimum color correction and sharpness, as well as a Super Multi-Layer lens coating that reduces flare and ghosting. This array of optical features assure high image quality throughout the entire zoom range, and widely varying lighting situations

I have been using this Lens for a few weeks now and I am really happy with the results. Removing the need to switch between my 18-55 and my 55-200 has proven to be a massive advantage. I have used the lens for landscape and family photographs and the results are really great. Shooting cityscapes in low light hand-held with the OS on then off really shows up the advantages of this feature. I was really impressed by the speed of focus, this has allowed me to get sharp images of wildlife even if they are moving. The weight and size are also impressive when you consider the range it offers. Moving away from Nikkor lenses I was assuming my photos would be somewhat compromised but really I cant see any difference. I have experimented with the close focus feature also and whereas it may not technically be a true Macro it is really good to be able to shoot small items up close. So far I have not seen any down sides to the Sigma, getting used to the opposite movement for the focus ring was not too difficult. All told, this is a great lens easy to use and excellent results.

I have been looking to buy a lens of this type, even considered the Tamron at first but after reading the reviews I held off. Then the Sigma came along and everyone was giving it great reviews and with a nice instant rebate I ordered one. I'm using a Nikon D5100 which does an excellent job with the 18-105 lens. The Sigma arrived and after using it for two weeks I have returned it in exchange for the Nikon 18-300 which had a nice rebate. The Sigma was giving me constant focusing issues and I could only occasionally get tack sharp pictures with it no matter what I did. Many times I would take three or four pictures of the same thing with the same settings with different results almost every time. Needless to say I was very disappointed with this lens and wonder if perhaps I got a defective unit seeing that others seemed to be so satisfied.

Comments about Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM for Nikon F Mount:

In terms of my background, I do freelance work in videography and photography using a D3200. The Sigma 18-250 has delivered and then some! The construction of the lens is very well done and it has stood up to a lot of abuse from a couple of shows I've filmed. The auto-focus is quick, silent and accurate. I can achieve very good wide angle shots as well as close macro shots for both photography and filming. It is my go-to lens now.

The few gripes I have with the lens is the Optical Stabilization is not as fine-tuned as stock VR lenses from Nikon but it is still OS nevertheless which is always a good thing. Another gripe is the focus pull is VERY short. An example: During a live concert, I spent a good amount of time pulling focus for some shots because I either pulled focus too far or too close and I couldn't find the right spot because the focus was a short throw. I had to use a very slow and smooth pull, which took too much time. If I were on set for a production this would have been fine, but it was a live gig where time was not on my side. The last gripe I have with the lens is the lens creep is very apparent, but that comes with super-zoom lenses and that's why there's a lock at 18mm.

All in all, it is my go-to lens with a couple problems, but the problems can be dealt with and are not deal-breakers because they are things I just have to get used to.

Comments about Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM for Nikon F Mount:

Bought this lens for Nikon D3300 to replace the 18-55mm VR II kit lens. It works great with the camera. Image quality is on par with the kit lens which was sharp itself. Initially the Sigma lens felt substantially heavier, and it took me some time to get used to its heft.

It has just the right size and looks great on the camera body. The auto focus is slightly faster and quieter than the kit lens. It only struggles to focus in low contrast and dark areas, like most lenses. Having such a large zoom range is very convenient when out shooting which is the reason I bought it.

On the minus side, as mentioned by many, the lens creeps a lot, and the zoom dial has uneven resistance to it. Image stabilization doesn't seem as good as the kit lens. As you zoom in, it gets dark pretty quickly, but you can easily compensate by increasing the ISO. Barrel distortion is noticeable on most shots, quite severe in some cases. Lastly, the effective focal length doesn't seem close to 250mm on the long end.

All in all, I am happy with the purchase and the results I have gotten from portrait, macro, landscape, sports shots with the lens. Considering the price and the convenience it offers, I think the benefits far outweigh the flaws. Highly recommended.

Comments about Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM for Nikon F Mount:

When I was researching lenses, the professional reviews all talked about how any superzoom was a compromise and not to expect the kind of quality that a less ambitious lens might provide. So I was expecting to be a bit disappointed. But I have to say the results are far better than I expected, and I'm very impressed.

The sharpness is impressive even wide open, the autofocus is quick and relatively quiet. Good contrast and color rendition, too. Perhaps most impressive of all is the vibration control. I was testing it one evening shooting a picture of a basket detail at the macro setting (which means the lens was extended to 250 mm)in very dim light, handheld at 1/10 sec. and got a perfectly usable result. Not just acceptable for a handheld slow shutter speed, but acceptable by any standard. I was astonished. And I've found similar results in many other circumstances.

The only thing I've found that is any kind of drawback--and it's a very small one--is that it requires a bit more effort to lock it onto my Nikon than the Nikon lenses I have. It's not any kind of problem; just something I noticed.

I know there are lenses out there that are even better than this one, but given the results I'm seeing, I'm not in a hurry to go find them--and definitely not in a hurry to pay the premium for them.

Surprisingly good results from this lens. I actually went through 2 nikon lens that broke, on with the auto focus got stuck and another just fell apart, so I got this. I have had it a few months now and find myself using my old camera a lot more (nikon d200 with this lens) than I used to. It is durable. Of course it has it's limits, I wouldn't take this to a wedding or anything, this is a great lens for the money and I am very happy I bought it. Good for those taking photos for enjoyment. Not a true macro, but like I said, more for fun..."oh this is neat", but nothing spectacular in that aspect.

This a good lens for travelling. Not too heavy. I do a lot of hiking, skiing, climbing and with that range I don't need to change lenses to often. What I do not like is lens creep, but can be easy locked with a switch at 18mm. Build quality is poor, very plastic, except it has a metal mount.Focus is quiste and fast.Colours are good, contrast also good.Sharpness is very good at the center in almost all zoom range, but the corners are really soft.If you do a lot of travelling and need only one lens, this is for you (with an average quiality). If you prefer quality, go for 2 or 3 short zoom lenses.

Purchased this as an walk around lens for my Nikon d3200. The autofocus is quick, and to this novice's eyes, the pictures are sharp. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

I had to click the lock button to keep the lens from moving out.
This is a new additional, so I have not had too much use with it as of yet.
But did notice the lens creep as soon as I hung it on my camera strap.

I like the fact that you have a does it all in only one lens. Not heavy to carry on a small bag with the camera. The only thing that I don't like from this lens is the material that doesn't feel strong.

Comments about Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM for Nikon F Mount:

I bought this lens out of the desire to not have to swap lenses and getting my sensor dirty. This lens is smooth, autofocus is blazing fast and for the zoom range is very light weight. I have a Sigma 105mm Macro lens and this lens is easily 1/4 the weight, but not as "macro" as advertised.
Highly recommend for anyone who wants range without sacrificing quality!

Great lens. Sharp throughout the range. I used it with a Nikon D7100 camera. I bought it for my wife, she had a Nikon D5100, she hates changing lenses. I want to keep it for myself. Fat chance of that happening.

                        The perfect kit lens replacement

Comments about Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM for Nikon F Mount:

I made my purchase at B&H after making the mistake of going to the many rip off stores of Times Square. Please never buy any where else other than B&H if you go to New York professional advice and service plus you can return if you are unhappy unlike like the rip off stores! now to the lens after much debate and questioning. As I am a novice and new to DSLR photography I decided that I needed a lens that would eliminate the necessity to carry both my nikon's kit lenses. 18-55mm and 55-200mm. The Sigma at 18-250mm gives better telephoto plus has optical stabilisation and does the job of both kit lenses.which neither have OS or as Nikon names it VR. The lens is slightly heavier than some of the competition. But I put that down to its robust quality build. Whilst I cannot make an informed technical judgement of this lens I can tell you that this lens hasn't disappointed can take a wide angle shot at Times Square whilst Zooming on Central Park from the top of the Rockerfella centre. No more walking around with two lenses. This is a brilliant travel lenses. And to my mind as we'll built as the Nikon lenses.
