Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed. Lee Grad ND filters are part clear, part neutral density (available in grades of .3 (1 stop), .45 (1.5 stops), .6 (2 stops), .75 (2.5 stops), .9 (3 stops)). They allow the transition to be blended into the scene, often imperceptibly. A neutral density .6-to-clear, with a two stop differential, will generally compensate the average bright sky-to-foreground situation and is also the most popular density of the series.
Lee graduated neutral density filters are available with soft or hard transitions from dark to clear. The soft edge is recommended for wide angle lenses and the hard edge is recommended for normal and longer lenses.
Lee graduated resin filters are 4 x 6" (100 x 150mm) x 2mm thick. The 6" length allows for adjustment of the filter within the holder.
Neutral Density factors:
ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop)
ND.45 (exposure adjustment = 1.5 stops)
ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops)
ND.75 (exposure adjustment = 2.5 stops)
ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops)

Comments about LEE Filters 4x6" Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 0.45 Resin Filter - Soft Edge:
I have tried to get the Lee Filters ND soft edge set for months. These filters are all made by hand making them very difficult to get. So I ended up purchasing the individually which cost a bit more. High quality filter and works very well. Takes a bit of playing with exposures to get it right however.

This can be used without a frame and just held up to the front of the lens.

Comments about LEE Filters 4x6" Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 0.45 Resin Filter - Soft Edge:
Paired with the Lee filter holder you can stack this filter with others to achieve great effects! This filter has been a godsend and I use it frequently. You might be able to achieve similar effects in Photoshop but there's nothing like getting it right in the camera.
