Canon Close-up lenses are for quick and easy close-up photography. The close-up lens is screwed on to the front of a lens like a filter. Close-up lenses 250D and 500D have two achromatic elements to correct chromatic aberrations. They do not degrade the high optical performance of EF lenses. Close-up lens 500 has only one element, making it more affordable.

The 250D is suited for lenses with a focal length anywhere from 30 to 135mm. The 500D and 500 are geared for lenses with a focal length anywhere from 70 to 300mm.

I purchased the Canon 250D close-up lens in order to convert my Pentax DA* 55mm primary lens into a macro lens. The product itself is beautifully made and a joy to handle. It has a double lens construction that is claimed to reduce chromatic aberration (CR), and so it is considerably more expensive than the commonly available single-lens variety. I also wanted to test whether or not it could actually resolve finer details than simply enlarging and cropping a picture taken without the close-up lens. In order to answer both questions, I mounted my Pentax K-5 camera on a tripod and photographed my test chart on the wall at the minimum possible focal distance, both with and without the close-up lens attached. I used a wireless flash mounted to one side, and set the aperature to f/8. First, with the close-up lens attached, the minimum focal distance from the test pattern to the base of the camera decreased from about 15" to 8". Second, the image size increased by a factor of 2.5, exactly as expected. Third, and most importantly, the ultimate resolving power increased by at least a factor of 2, as measured by zooming the test pattern by 400% on the computer screen. This corresponds to a resolving power of 30 microns or better. However, a separate test showed that the depth-of-field is correspondingly decreased by the same factor of 2.5, for any given f-stop setting. Finally there was no observable CA, even at this extreme magnification, with or without the close-up lens. In conclusion, the Canon 250D close-up lens met all my expectations, and proved to be an effective way of increasing the resolving power of my Pentax-DA* 55mm primary lens without loss of image quality, other than the expected loss of depth-of-field for a given f-stop.

I am still quite not sure about its purpose, but I bought with an intention of doing macro photography comfortably with my Canon 50 mm f/1.4 prime(especially bugs, eyes, flowers etc), but this lens didn't quite help me as I have to still get too close to the subject (while I thought otherwise). Nothing to say about the lens (it is quite sharp for whatever I took getting too close) as I haven't used much. I will try working with it few more days. It's quite heavy too.

        Great Alternative to Macro Lens

        Comments about Canon 58mm 250D Close-up Lens:

This does a great job for me. It is light and easy to put in my pocket when I'm out for a stroll. It is a great alternative to a dedicated macro lens for people like me, on a budget.

I have several of these lenses in different diameters. They are so useful when you need just a little extra close up power & do not want to carry a macro lens or a lot of accessories. They really help with a mirror less set up for flowers, large insects or even jewlery and watches. For the minimalist kit they are a must in my book.

          Comments about Canon 58mm 250D Close-up Lens:

Compared to the price of a decent lens, you can experiment and own this lens for pocket change, and it offers you the opportunity to do things (really close) that you simply could not otherwise do. It's simple - just screw it on - and you're off. But it requires a lot more effort and patience and practice than just popping another auto-focus zoom lens onto the front of your camera.

This handy lens works beautifully when attached to my Nikon 50mm 1.8G lens. It is easy to take along in your bag and pop it on when you need it. It has a limited focus range, but for what it does, it does it very well with the sharpness and quality of a macro lens.

I finally received the 58mm250D close-up lens after waiting a few months it had been out of stock everywhere.
I was pleased at how well built it is and it fits perfectly onto my Canon XA10.
I am using it to film close-up shots used as filler/effects on my videos.
Have not used it enough to give long term review.
                      So far so good.

Screws on the end of the MT-24EX dual flash as well. This is a really ideal setup. I'm very happy with this purchase. Great enhancement for under ninety bucks!

                            Comments about Canon 58mm 250D Close-up Lens:

This lens is a great addition to the bag. Its ability to capture great detail is incredible. We use it with the stock 18-55mm lens that came with our T1i (with UV/Polarization filters). I can honestly find no flaws with this lens. I use it for ultra close-up model railroad photos and my wife uses it for just about anything that she wants to capture up close - plants and flowers, animals - you name it!

I was going to get my girlfriend a macro lens, however I talked to one of my friends who is a photographer and she said that I could do this for now and it would let her take the close up pics she wants without the high price of a macro lens. My girlfriend loves it so far and cannot wait to see what a real macro lens can do. Overall great service and a great product.

I use it for tabletops. Some can be very amusing! Its amazing how many little things on the shelves can be placed together to create interesting PIX.
