Canon Close-up lenses are for quick and easy close-up photography. The close-up lens is screwed on to the front of a lens like a filter. Close-up lenses 250D and 500D have two achromatic elements to correct chromatic aberrations. They do not degrade the high optical performance of EF lenses. Close-up lens 500 has only one element, making it more affordable.

The 250D is suited for lenses with a focal length anywhere from 30 to 135mm. The 500D and 500 are geared for lenses with a focal length anywhere from 70 to 300mm.

I think I'll use my macro lens. Sure, this is handy to carry around when space is limited - one walkaround lens + this Close-up lens. But it's a real pain to focus and screwing it off and on is no harder than screwing on my L-series macro lens. I'll keep it, but prob won't use it a lot except in dire circumstances.

Comments about Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens:

I was so happy to try this.Very professional when it works with what you use as a tool.Yes it is sharp all over and aligns perfectly with my 77 mm threads.Have been enjoying the excellent working distance and clarity .With this on my telephoto, a lot of close up benefits are with camera support, Glad I,ve got step down rings so I can use with some other lens. The light weight to make my telephoto shots close up capable is the real capper.Came with a nice storage case worthy of my camera bag. Also the bonus over my teleconverters, no loss of light. On a really bright day even a extension on the lens works well too. Excellent buy.Enjoying my new found freedom.I should have bought this ages ago.

Comments about Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens:

This brilliant close-up lens is perfectly designed to be an accessory to Canon's 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II lens. I have the occasional desire to shoot macro, but could not justify the cost of a dedicated quality macro lens. This close-up lens converts this exceptional zoom lens into a superb macro lens for a fraction of the cost. Yes, you first have to own the rather expensive zoom lens, and then it is a relatively small investment to convert it to a macro when required, by simply screwing on this close-up lens like a filter. This add on is not, however, a flimsy filter - it is a substantial piece of glass, made up of two achromatic elements, that delivers brilliant performance. Love it!

Nice addition to my gear

By Mike

Comments about Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens:

I bought this to replace a dedicated closeup lens that I found I rarely used and so far it hasn't disappointed. It's much heavier than I expected but still lighter and smaller than the 90mm lens. I have two lenses that this will work with, a 24-70 and 70-400. Very happy with this purchase.

Used this lens "officially" the first time recently while doing a wedding to photograph the rings. Matched with my 70-200 f2.8, I got some beautifully detailed, sharp images. Impressive build quality on this piece of glass, a great addition to my camera bag!

      Comments about Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens:

I use this on Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 on D7000, and with B&W 72-77mm Step-Up Ring on Nikon 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 (also on D7000), works exactly as advertised. I could get closer (i.e., greater magnification) with a macro lens or extension tubes, but hey, I'm not trying to take head-shots of a tsetse fly, this 500D is plenty good enough to get better close-ups of flowers and other small subjects. Very solid construction, quality materials, very glad I bought it, definitely recommend.

        Comments about Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens:

This filter I used on 24-70mm for Nikon and got in much closer to ring photos and very pleased with extra detail in ring shots showing cut diamond features etc. at brides home.
I also tried this filter with step up ring adaptor on 85mm prime lens somewhere else.
Did a great job on closeups of eyes in tests. I am pleased with results, of not having to bring along another lens in my bag already full of several lenses, as I have the 60mm macro as well. I am however keeping my 60 macro for now as I can get in even much closer at 1:1, and great for other purposes, and the true macro has more edge to edge sharpness. The 77mm 500D did a fine job regardless, and keeps my bag lighter when I want less to bring, so I am keeping both for now.

        Achromatic doublet 1.5x lens magnifier

          Comments about Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens:

This is a very well built achromatic doublet 1.5x magnifier that screws onto the end of your lens. A lens doublet is superior to a single element because two layers of glass can be used that have indexes of refraction that complement each other to help zero out chromatic distortion. It will allow you to reduce the distance from the lens to the subject for a larger object size at the sensor plane. Your camera's autofocus capabilities and exposure control will be constrained but will work. This magnifier will sacrifice your ability to focus out to infinity. A good rule of thumb is that overall lens sharpness will be roughly halved. How this affects your image sharpness will depend on how much better your lens is than your sensor to begin with. For example, if your lens is capable of 48 mpx (outstanding pro quality) and your sensor is only capable of 24 mpx then you may notice no loss in image sharpness using this magnifier. But if you have a cheaper lens that is only capable of 12-17 mpx (most consumer zooms) you will really notice the loss in image quality.Light is lost from the 1.5x magnification factor (0.67x light) and also from the necessary "stopping-down" that is needed to expand the extremely narrow depth of field. Your shutter-speed will drop and/or your auto-ISO will be pushed higher (grainier) so use a tripod for best results. This will work on any lens that will accept the same filter thread size from wide-angle to telephoto. When considering how much image magnification you will get, most often I hear that longer FL lenses are best. This is generally true, but some shorter FL lenses have a much closer minimum focus distance. Remember that overall magnification is a result of both minimum focus distance and FL. To make it easier to understand, simply multiply the maximum subject magnification of your original lens x 1.5. For example, my 24-70mm f2.8 Nikkor will produce an object image that is almost as large as I can get from my 70-200mm f2.8. Everything else being equal though, a longer FL lens will provide a longer working distance from the object to the lens which can make using it much, much easier.5 stars because it functions as well as can be expected considering the limits of what this type of optical add-on design can offer, not because it will substitute for a true macro lens. A true macro lens will be plenty sharp enough for display or printing at 1:1 (sensor pixels to display pixel ratio), will actually magnify to 1:1 (object size to image size),have no geometric distortion, provide higher light levels to the sensor, and will focus out to infinity. If you are considering this product you should also compare prices to a used macro lens, even one with manual focus because you will usually turn off autofocus anyway.

It was recommended in Scott Kelby's book on Digital photography to buy this item instead of a close-up lens. I was skeptical, but my budget was tight. What a pleasant surprise! I use this with my Canon F2.8 70 - 200 Zoom and have already taken some amazing shots of flowers and insects with exceptional detail. It's not much bigger than a filter, so it's easy to keep in my camera bag so that I always have it with me. This was a great purchase and quite reasonable for the quality of my results!

I have always been a supporter of the two element diopter, mounted on a 70-200mm zoom lens, over using a macro lens for general closeup work. The quality of the Canon 500D, didn't disappoint.Diopters are easily carried in your pocket when travelling and enable you to do close ups when used on a high quality zoom with little effort.

                          Comments about Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens:

the 180 macro is 72 mm. I used a step up to 77mm. attached the77mm closeup filter then used a step down to go back down to 72mm and then attached the ringlight. Worked great with no loss of image.

                          Comments about Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens:

This is a much better choice than any single-element so-called "close-up filters" out there. The Canon 500D, +2 diopters, with fine optics, can be added to any long focal length lens to give almost macro size images conveniently without carrying the extra weight of macro lenses or without investing in the significant extra expense of macro lenses. I keep it my camera bag all the time (along with extension tubes) so that if I see a potential closeup subject but I am travelling light without my macro lenses, I am still able to capture the opportunity. Two-element construction maintains edge-to-edge sharpness and significantly reduces chromatic aberration.

                            Comments about Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens:

I use this product together with my 70-200mm f/4 telephoto zoom. What is really nice about this product is that it increases the magnification of my lens when I zoom in which helps my compositions. It feels heavy and solid. Image quality is excellent. For my lens I use a 67mm-77mm step up ring onto which I screw this close up lens.

                            Comments about Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens:

I have no regrets on purchasing this lens.  It does a great job with my Canon 70-200mm telephoto and even my Tokina 11-16mm.   It's not difficult to use and the quality of  pics are above average.    Don't compare this close-up with a macro lens..   If you are into macro photography keep saving and get macro lens. The best used is in casual situations in need of a close-up when using specially the telephoto. This lens could easily come out of your pocket and in most cases won't let you down, unless your subject is a flea.   No reason to address the macro limitations because is simple not a macro lens.
