The Vello BG-N8 Battery Grip for Nikon D300/300s is designed specifically for the Nikon D300 and 300s DSLR cameras and accepts one EN-EL3e, EN-EL4 or EN-EL4a battery in addition to the battery in the camera body. With two batteries installed, your shooting time is effectively doubled. More so, when one battery is drained, it can be removed and recharged while you continue shooting with the other battery. Utilizing the included battery holder, it can also function with 8 AA batteries installed.
The design of a battery grip offers a comfortable and secure way in which to hold your DSLR, especially in the vertical position. And the BG-N8 comes with an alternate shutter release button, AF-ON button, multi-selector and main and sub-command dials to facilitate shooting when the camera is held vertically. In addition, the BG-N8 is designed with anti-slip rubber grip to further improve handling, a tripod socket to mount your camera directly to a tripod and a wonderful touch: a holder for the camera's contact cover so as not to lose it when it has been removed to install the battery grip.

While there is no arguing with the money saved over the Nikon grip, the quality is a bit lacking. If you bought your D300/s for the stout body you will be disappointed by the Vello grip as it just does not feel as well designed or manufactured. Toleranecs and materials both suffer to meet a price point.
On a separate note, it may just be the unit I received but, the command dial rotated opposite to the camera body to achieve the same setting adjustment (the Nikon worked as expected).

Comments about Vello BG-N8 Battery Grip for Nikon 300/300s:
I wanted a battery grip for my Nikon 300S but not enough to pay the Nikon premium. I haven't tried the Nikon product but would assume it would match match the quality of the camera. Having used the Vello grip for a couple of weeks I have not not been disappointed. It is a well made made product which performs as expected. The weight balances the camera especially with longer lenses and so I find myself leaving it attached all the time. Of course it helps enormously when used in portrait mode. Overall I am very pleased and would recommend it wholeheartedly. The Nikon product would no doubt be tougher but I can buy six Vello grips for the same money. It's a no brained.

Comments about Vello BG-N8 Battery Grip for Nikon 300/300s:
I never put a battery grip on my D300 before now because of the total cost involved with a full Nikon MB-D10, Nikon EN-EL4a and Nikon MH-21 charger.
When I read so many positive reviews for the Vello branded grip at roughly 25% the cost of the Nikon I had to give it a try.
Along with the BG-N8 Vello grip I got the Nikon EN-EL4a battery / MH-21 rapid charger combination. That allows me to shoot all day (usually) without re-charging and increased my camera burst rate from 6 to 8 FPS for sports related photography.
Adding the grip, loaded with the EN-EL4a, to my D300 has significantly increased the weight but I like the added size of the grip for my big hands. It's nice not having reach over the top of the camera body for portrait mode shots.

Comments about Vello BG-N8 Battery Grip for Nikon 300/300s:
I was skeptical at first when I bought a battery grip for my D300 that was not the same brand as my camera. However, I thought I would trust the other reviews. So I purchased my new battery grip that was only 20% of the original cost of the name brand of my camera. I've had positive results. Strong made goods, lives up to the pressure of continuous shooting and more. I'd recommend this over and over again to others who's having the same concerns.

Comments about Vello BG-N8 Battery Grip for Nikon 300/300s:
Finally pulled the plug on purchasing a battery grip. Went with the vello grip due to cost vs nikon grip. A little plasticky but seems to work ok. some of the controls are not great but the fact of having the vertical shutter release is great plus having an extra battery. Will probably purchase enel4a battery to speed up shooting rate on my d700

Comments about Vello BG-N8 Battery Grip for Nikon 300/300s:
This is an excellent copy of the Nikon MB-D10. I have the Nikon MB-D10 ($[$] purchased four years ago and the Vello ($) purchased a couple of weeks ago. It looks and feels just like the Nikon with the exception of the weight. The Vello MB-D10 is much lighter but the fit and finish are the same as the Nikon. I purchased the Vello so that I could use two gripped cameras for basketball and I could not tell a difference in the function of either grip. I'll be buying another one when I purchase either the D800 or the D400 and save $$$ over the Nikon!

Comments about Vello BG-N8 Battery Grip for Nikon 300/300s:
Out of the box,I read the instructions. No problem to mate it with my 300s. It took a few minutes before circuits were getting acquainted, but no problem. A little patience; less than would be required to capture that beautiful shot of the bird. The plastic body feels strong and does not add much weight - the camera is heavy. Fits very well. I do all sorts of photo.. I use the BG as a means to capture more photos. I have not used it enough to talk endurance. Increasein fps is not really recognizable, ( 7fps to 8fps) Excellent price. Thanks B&H

Just received this MB-D10 clone and I've had a chance to compare it to my Nikon MB-D10. The Vello product looks, feels and functions as good as the Nikon. It's also much lighter because of its lighter build quality. Buy the Vello and save $ which could be spent on a lens or speedlight or...

Comments about Vello BG-N8 Battery Grip for Nikon 300/300s:
This is the second time around to review the BG-N8 Battery Grip though the first time it was listed as BG-N1. I've a D300 which is already considered obsolete and purchasing another Battery Grip was a panic buy as a back-up replacement should something happen to the BN-N1 since I know not how long it will be available. Having an extra battery as back-up is as essential as sliced bread and where better than in a well designed battery grip.

Use as a vertical grip for a D300. It preforms just like the name brand version. With the proper batteries you can get 8fps from the D300.

Comments about Vello BG-N8 Battery Grip for Nikon 300/300s:
BG-N8 works just as well as Nikon MB-D10 but cost much less then Nikon brand. I have my D300 setup to use EN-EL3e in the BG-N8 first and when that battery is exhausted the other EN-EL3e in the D300 takes over. I love that now I can take vertical shots comfortably using the shutter release button on the grip.

Comments about Vello BG-N8 Battery Grip for Nikon 300/300s:
The BG-N8 works great! Having an extra battery takes me up to eight frames per second, just what I need for action shots. It also lets me shoot longer than I would have before purchasing the bat grip. Only one draw back, I have to remove the grip to charge the battery located inside the camera, unlike the D80/D90 grip where both batteries are in side the grip.
