How about all of that Drobo power in an itty-bitty form factor? The sporty and compact Drobo Mini 4-bay Enclosure has all the power of the Drobo 5D, but the footprint of the unit isn't much bigger than a deli sandwich. Made of a cutting-edge metallic carbon fiber with a soft-touch rubberized finish, the unit feels like it's ready to be field-tested right out of the box. And because it uses 2.5" drives, primarily found in laptop computers, the unit is made to moved, from the studio to the worksite to the client's office.

You can fit up to up to four (4) 2.5" SATA I / II / III hard disk drives of any manufacturer, capacity, spindle speed, and/or cache, or solid state drives (enterprise-class hard drives are not supported) that are between 7mm and 9.5mm in height (drives sold separately) and one (1) mSATA solid state drive in the Drobo Accelerator Bay for increased performance.

We've talked about Thunderbolt before - it's 25 x faster than USB 2.0 - and its data transfer rates almost approach warp speed, but more importantly, it reliably and safely transfers big-project data across multiple disks. Imagine having to put a crucial 200GB file on a USB 2.0 drive, as you're late for an important meeting and running out the door. You'll be delayed for ten minutes or more, trust us. The same crucial information on a Thunderbolt attached drive - 20 seconds.

You can also daisy-chain up to six Thunderbolt devices and/or a non-Thunderbolt monitor at the end of the chain. And, the bi-directional 10 Gbps performance of Thunderbolt allows all devices in the chain to achieve maximum throughput. Please note that a Thunderbolt cable is not included and is sold separately.

But Thunderbolt isn't the only option. The Drobo Mini also sports USB 3.0 connections, which is still 12 x above the transfer rates for USB 2.0. This interface allows PC users to utilize the power of the Drobo 5D right out of the box.

The Drobo Mini also uses their proprietary Data-Aware Tiering technology, usually reserved for business-class storage solutions, but also available in this desktop Drobo. It intelligently uses the high-performance flash in SSDs to accelerate performance of the storage array, allowing applications such as Adobe Premiere and Apple Aperture fast access to data.

And the Drobo Mini is built on the BeyondRAID technology, which features single- or dual-drive redundancy. This added layer of protection will create mirrors of one drive so that you'll always have a backup. Paired with the ability to hot-swap drives, this conceivably allows you to formulate a game plan on the fly in the case of a drive failure or power outage.

Speaking of power outages, the Drobo Mini also includes a battery backup - when power is spontaneously interrupted, the battery keeps the Drobo alive long enough for the data to be written to non-volatile storage. The battery recharges itself and is designed to last for the life of the product.

The design of the unit has you in mind as well -it's sleek, sturdy, and has a carrierless drive-bay design so that hard drives fit closer to each other, and the unit houses a significantly quieter variable-speed cooling fan.

BeyondRAID Technology
BeyondRaid Technology features single- or dual-drive redundancy. This added layer of protection will create mirrors of one drive so that you'll always have a backup.
Data Aware Tiering
Data-Aware Tiering technology, usually reserved for business-class storage solutions, is also available in this portable Drobo. It intelligently uses the high-performance flash in SSDs to accelerate performance of the storage array, allowing applications such as Adobe Premiere and Apple Aperture fast access to data.
First Drobo with 2.5" Drives
Four hot-swappable drive bays support drives of any capacity (enterprise-class hard drives are not supported). No carriers or screws are needed to insert drives into a Drobo Mini. An innovative new design allows drives to click in and out like a ballpoint pen. Since 2.5" drives are primarily used in laptop computers, they're designed to be portable. Because of this, you can pick up and move Drobo Mini around with confidence.
Thunderbolt and USB 3.0
Drobo Mini is equipped with dual Thunderbolt ports for daisy chaining. Connect up to six Thunderbolt devices and/or a non-Thunderbolt monitor at the end of the chain. This allows even the most portable laptop computers access to high-performance storage while retaining connectivity to other devices and an external monitor. Drobo is the only storage array that offers Thunderbolt and USB 3.0. This latest USB also offers high-performance connectivity and is backward compatibility with computers running compatible versions of Mac OS X or Windows.
Power and Critical Data
Drobo doesn't just protect you from a drive failure, but also from potential data loss after a power outage. Drobo Mini includes a battery that protects all data in memory, or cache, that is, data on its way to the drives. When power spontaneously goes away, the battery keeps the Drobo alive long enough for the data to be written to nonvolatile storage. The battery recharges itself and is designed to last for the life of the product.

great size, fits right underneath the new 2013 Mac Pro, color fits well too. Over both Thunderbolt and USB 3, getting just over 200Mb read/write. Not bad, not amazing, but it's more the main file server for the Mac Pro. my computer only has 256Gb on board SSD, so all my work files are on the Drobo mini. with 4 Hitachi 7200rpm 2.5" 1Tb drives, works great! I have 3Tb of space for all my files with 1 drive redundancy, whole package is portable so I just take both in one bag to/from work, never worrying abt backups or where my files are. when I video edit, I use Thunderbolt SSDs and the Western Digital Velocirapter. highly recommended, easy to configure, install, great product. some say it's not amazing fast, but for me, the small form factor, small drives, quietness, and perfection as base for the new Mac Pro makes it ideal. just add Backblaze to your mission critical files and you're all set.

While it works great and was easy to set up for use as an external disk with my Mac, it doesn't mount when connected to the Apple Airport Extreme router.

I was planning to use the Drobo as network attached storage by sharing the drive on the home network using the router's disk sharing option. Not being able to do this reduced the usefulness of the device.

If you are just planning to use the USB or Thunderbolt cable to connect it directly to your computer it is a very convenient storage solution, with data redundancy built in.

Big, safe storage in a small package

Comments about Drobo Mini 4-Bay Enclosure:

Loaded with four Seagate 2TB Spinpoint M9T 2.5 Mobile SATA Internal hard drives and a Crucial 240GB M500 mSATA Internal SSD drive (for acceleration), this makes a very fast and safe drive. It is where I put files I don't want to lose and so far it works perfectly and is very fast. I would be happier if 4TB 2.5 inch drives existed, but this is the smallest, and best bang for the buck RAID set up that I have found to date.

Does just what it should. Loaded with SSDs it is blazing fast. The only negative I can think of is that it takes a bit of time to boot up when Turing the computer on. Not a big deal at all.

Once I get it to power up, it works OK. I'm using standard drives, and the darn thing gets pretty hot. That's not too confidence-inspiring. But, what really bugs me is the power connector and the on/off button. You might wonder, "how could they screw that up?" Well, evidently, the Drobo dudes did that part of their design work on a Monday morning, after a wild weekend. Maybe they weren't even sobered up yet. The connector itself is a mini locking connector that you have to treat JUST RIGHT. And the tiny little power button, hidden right next to that stinky little connector, has a mind of its own. Sometimes, it will work. And sometimes, it won't. I'd be happier with a friggin' toggle switch. But, hey, those are some really cool LED lights on the front panel... I own two other Drobos, and they work OK, but I could never figure out why they didn't have an on/off switch. Now, I know why.

I have a first gen Drobo and I started getting error messages when sending files over a network. I wanted to upgrade to the Drobo Mini but they only supported 1TB drives. Since I have 3.25TB of data and I could only use 4x1TB drives at 2.72 TB, it wasn't a good fit for me at the moment.

Now that Samsung has 2TB drives in the 9.5mm form factor, I can finally upgrade to the mini and take all my data wherever I go.

So far, it works OK. I already own 2 generation 2 drobos, so I must like them. And I'm really happy to see that Drobo added an on/off power switch to this. But- geez!- why is it so small and finicky? I have to screw around with the back of the box every time I turn it on. They could ditch the fancy lights and the cool packaging, and I wouldn't care. Just give me a decent on/off switch, pleeze!

I've only had the Mini Drobo in the studio for a little while, but super easy install. So far I'm impressed. Read a review or two before purchasing about noise, but I'm not noticing much of any. Running it as a media storage unit and backup for a Macbook Pro Retina with AVID Media Composer 7 software. In talking to Drobo, they recommended using disks that spin @ 7400.

Comments about Drobo Mini 4-Bay Enclosure:

I have two Drobo Mini devices. The first is used to store my electronic media (books, photographs, videos, software, etc), The second is setup to be my TimeMachine backup drive for both the first Drobo Mini and the local system hard drive.

Installation of the hard drives and setup on the desktop were straightforward. There have been a few minor annoyances.

                  1) I have yet to be able to register the products using the Drobo Dashboard. The software doesn't recognize the account that was setup to accomplish this task. I have registered the products, but through the website directly.

                  2) The desktop is running Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6.8). As a result, I am not able to chain the devices together using the lightning connectors. I instead have to use two of the USB connectors, one for each drive.

                  3) The operating system does not recognize the actual capacity of the drive. Instead, the theoretical maximum specified during setup is used by OSX. For the TimeMachine device, this necessitated additional partitioning, using the disk utility, where the first partition was sized at 85% of the actual capacity. This should result in a drive that can fill to capacity without flagging the drives as needing expansion and not result in backup issues when TimeMachine tries to use virtual disk that doesn't exist.

This being said, the Drobo Minis that I now have are my first from this company. Hoping that the devices perform well over the long haul.

I converted from a Drobo (2nd Gen) to the Drobo Mini. Setup was a breeze... insert hard drives, insert mSATA for blazing speed, and connect. Transferring over 1.5 TB of data took several hours, but now that my music, photos, and videos were on the Drobo Mini, iPhoto and iTunes opened up much, much faster. On my old Drobo, I've had 3 HDs fail over the past 5 years and the ease of simply pulling out and inserting a new HD is so easy. No thinking on my part.

The only complaint I have is that the fans are a bit noisy if you have in on your desktop, but no louder than a laptop and it's understandable because of the smaller enclosure. Its not a deal breaker. I would and have recommended Drobo to many friends.

I'm using this hard drive RAID for videos, RAW images and processed images. I'm trying to avoid the need to buy more and more hard drives. I should be able to replace the individual drives with larger capacity drives as needed.

                      - Basic tests show that the drobo is about twice as fast as other firewire drives I use.
                      - You can't use normal hard drive tools to repair or maintain this drive. Hopefully the drobo software does that.
                      - The volume size in the Finder (Mac) is not the actual usable space on the RAID.

Comments about Drobo Mini 4-Bay Enclosure:

I bought the Mini in preparation for upgrading to the new MacPro. I have the unit loaded right now with (4) 1 TB drives and a 128 mSATA card. The speeds are great so far via Thunderbolt connected to my MacBookPro. The USB3 speeds are also good. I'm a working photographer and use Aperture for my stills shooting with D3s, D800, and D4. I also use FCPX for video work. The Drobo is handing the load well.

I had a external backup fail on me and it couldn't be recovered so I wanted a redundent backup system. The Drobo Mini was just what I needed. Set up was easy. I did had to install a USB 3 card in my computer first and that was just as easy. I've started using Microsoft's SyncToy for back-ups. It works fine

Comments about Drobo Mini 4-Bay Enclosure:

I had a 3Tb waterproof/fireproof IoSafe drive that went bad. I don't think I got a year out of it! I had everything backed up to Backblaze but had to wait for them to create & send me a drive. I already have a Drobo FS that I wasn't using much due to it being a network drive. I saw the mini when it came out and thought it would be nice. I got 4 1Tb drives for it and all is good. It's super fast! I did set it up with dual redundancy. Now I'm just keeping my current projects on it and everything else on the FS once complete. Plus the cloud & external drives for each year.

Comments about Drobo Mini 4-Bay Enclosure:

I had an original 4 bay Drobo that I used in conjunction with my 2009 Mac Pro. I upgraded my Mac Pro to the brand new screaming 27" iMac and decided to upgrade the Drobo as well to remove some bulk. This small Drobo is a great little companion for the iMac and plenty of power to run my Aperture Library from. Add an additional SSD into the expansion slot to make it even faster. I have one single complaint about the unit, and that is, it is pretty loud. Because of the small super fast spinning fan you get a good amount of noise from the unit. Not ideal if you have it on the same desk you use microphones on. This is not a deal breaker, but definitely something to be aware of if you have noise considerations.

I was super excited to get the drobo mini after hearing great reviews. Got everything loaded according to the directions and when I updated the firmware as instructed by the Drobo dashboard, it crashed my computer, no longer recognizes the unit on the USB 3 ports, only recognizes 1 of the 2 drives I purchased and has been a big hassle to try to resolve. I have been trouble shooting solutions with Drobo through their web interface and it's a do this...send us an email update...ok...now do this...send us another email update - and so on. Not even sure if they get it working properly I'll have faith in the system to work.

Comments about Drobo Mini 4-Bay Enclosure:

I purchased the Mini with 4 1TB Travelstar 7200RPM drives and a Crucial MSATA 120 GB SSD accelerator drive. This is connected to my MBP Retina with Thunderbolt. I am maintaining my raw and processed photo library on the Drobo Mini, while keeping my Lightoom 5 catalogs with smart previews on my MBP. When away from home this allows me to process the photos while not taking up a lot of space on my internal hard drive and sync the catalog back to the library when I reconnect with the Mini. The transfer speed is very fast. I don't know whether this is due to the SSD drive which accelerates performance or the Thunderbolt connection, but if there is a difference between the speed with my internal SSD drive and the Drobo Mini, it is barely noticeable. Setup was painless, but I do recommend carefully following the setup instructions. The downloadable Drobo "dashboard" software is well done and gives you all necessary information concerning the performance of the Mini (or any other Drobo you might connect). I can't speak to reliability since I've had it for only a few weeks (and there have been some issues with past Drobo models which are claimed to now be resolved), but if it remains reliable, I'm impressed, particularly at the lower price Drobo is now offering the Mini at.

In knew the great reputation for Drobo and loved the Mini's footprint and features, but did not allow for Apple Airport attached NAS. After calling Drobo, I was informed that it was not supported which was counter to all the threads on the web. Ethernet would be nice to resolve but had to go with another option.
