Product Highlights
  • Strong Carbon Fiber/Aluminum Gimbal Head
  • Supports Up to 40 lb
  • Weighs Only 2.4 lb
  • Reduced Vibrations Due to Carbon Fiber
  • Better Tolerance for Temperature Change
  • Arca-Compatible Quick Release System
  • Quick Release Plate Included
  • Tilts From +150 to -60 Degrees
  • Ideal for Using Long Telephoto Lenses

The Sirui PH-20 Gimbal Head is a great solution to the problem of shooting moving subjects with a long telephoto lens. Ball heads and 3-way heads can be cumbersome in fast-moving situations, but the gimbal head makes your camera and heavy lens seemingly weightless, and you can smoothly and precisely track fast-moving subjects.

Cross-patterned, multi-layer carbon fiber in the arm and forged aircraft aluminum alloy in the L-bracket make the PH-20 very strong--it can hold up to 44 lb, but it weighs only 2.4 lb. Carbon fiber also reduces vibrations and provides better tolerance for temperature changes.

With the camera and lens perfectly balanced on the gimbal head, there’s no need to lock any controls. You can quickly and easily move your camera in any direction with a very light amount of force. In fact, a correctly aligned system can be controlled with one finger.

Product packaging and overall build seem really nice.
However, when trying to do very small, minute movements (using a 500mm) - especially when doing video (I do mostly surf photography) - there is a sticking when trying to start the movement.
I've taken the top cap off the assembly where it connects to the tripod and sprayed some tri-flow in there. That seemed to help side-to-side. However, I cannot get the up and down to work. Unfortunately, for video especially this head does not perform well enough for me to use. I've even missed some stills due to the stickiness issue.
I believe it's past my return period too.

      Sirui PH-20 Gimbal Head.

Comments about Sirui PH-20 Gimbal Head:

I purchased this Sirui carbon fiber gimbal head to be used with a Gitzo Mountaineer #GT3531 tripod
and a FLM #PL-15 leveling plate as my lighter weight setup for traveling, and longer hikes into the field.
This gimbal head is defiantly lighter then either my Wimberley VRII, or my Custom Brackets CB gimbal
head. The Sirui is nicely finished and works well to a point. But, the action is a bit stiff (which I'm pretty sure will loosen up once it's used more, and used in warmer weather?) And I've found it to have little tension / friction control of the panning motion. It appears to either be tight, or fully off with an easy panning motion. When you try to put a little friction into the panning motion by slightly tightening down on the friction control knob; the action becomes jerky and no longer a smooth fluid motion! (Which would be unacceptable if you were doing any video work!) At the present time, this minor flaw is acceptable to me because of the lighter weight [2+lbs.] wanted of this gimbal. This Sirui #PH-20 Gimbal comes in a nicely padded case with several accessories that are expensive extra cost items with other gimbal heads. The Sirui Gimbal is a good value at it's present price from B&H. But: if Sirui can work out the problem with the stiff jerky/notchy motion when a slight tension is put on the panning friction control knob? It will be an excellent gimbal head, at an excellent price! For now; my Wimberley Gimbal VRII is still the smoothest, most fluid motion, with complete tension/friction control of all function's of all my Gimbal's: with the Custom Brackets CB Gimbal running a very close second.

Comments about Sirui PH-20 Gimbal Head:

I've had this gimbal for about a year. I use it with a 500mm telescope (80mm aperture) for nature observing and photography. The camera+telescope combo is about 5-6kg. I have a leveling base fitted under the gimbal, which is very practical when i'm continually changing locations on unlevel ground. I use a set of 3-series Gitzo legs i got from B&H 20 years ago, still as good as new.

The support is very stable, efficient and safe. I've used it in strong winds with no problems. The Sirui is also lightweight - well under 1kg as i use it, without the swing arm. The movement is smooth enough for observing and for photography. My telescope is easily and safely held in place, i can re-orient it with one finger, and it will stay pointed in place when i let go of it. There is no risk of my equipment taking a nose-dive. I can even swing it 360 degrees around itself with no fears. Finish and operation are impeccable.

In fact i like it so much that i use the Sirui and leveler with all my lens, leaving the Arca-swiss ball-head in the drawer. It goes without saying that i wouldn't even think of using a long lens with a ballhead after having used a gimbal head.

On the minus side, there is a little bit of stickyness in the vertical movement when starting the movement, which makes it less than ideal for video, but if you're shooting video, you should have a fluid head (=no stars deducted). Horizontal panning is as smooth as butter, but not damped of course.

        Siriui PH-20 Gimbal Head

        By The Teal Guy.

Comments about Sirui PH-20 Gimbal Head:

I was originally pleased with this purchase. The design & workmanship appeared excellent. All the carbon fiber weave was in alignment with no gap's filled in with the bonding agent. (An important fact in reference to strength to weight.) It was lighter in weight then aluminum gimbal's. Which was the main reason I purchased this gimbal. But; when I went to assemble it onto an FLM leveling plate head, I heard right away a clicking noise in the bearings of the pan head. While rotating (panning) the gimbal head around; you could hear a clicking noise as if one or more of the bearings were broken, of were not aligning within the race? If you tightened down on the friction knob just a little and tried to pan; the clicking became much louder and the panning motion jumped from one indent to the next with a jerking motion. It was obvious that something was defective. B&H was notified and authorized a returned with a prepaid shipping label. (It's nice to deal with a company that stands behind the products they sell!). Waiting for the replacement.

This will do exactly what I want with my 300mm 2.8 lens. The weight of the lens is off-set by the way a gimbal works. I can swing the lens up or down with one finger. It is truly a wonderful device. Given the intended use of this head, make sure you mount it on a sturdy tripod, capable of holding the weight of a long telephoto lens and camera.

Comments about Sirui PH-20 Gimbal Head:

Extraordinary attention to detail. Remarkable finish and fit to use. I use this product on a Carbon Fiber Manfrotto tripod either with a Nikon 600mm f/4 or a smaller brother the Nikon 80-400mm, providing for both excellent stability.

Gimbal Movements are smooth and precise; fit is exact and knobs tension is perfect.

It is pricey, but if you want a gimbal for life and ease of mind and perfection, search no more.

Agree with earlier posts, this is a good/satisfying product. Every part of the gimbal head works as it should. My wife has only used it for a few days with our 500mm and 600mm lenses but, agree that the head operates smoothly with no faults at this time.
It seems to be a great product.

Comments about Sirui PH-20 Gimbal Head:

(First, I am not associated with any vendor - just a customer). Just received the Sirui PH-20 gimbal head and have not taken it out of the house. My initial assessment of the product is that it deserves the five star rating. Rationale: it appears to be every thing that the previous comments have written. It even exceeded my expectations due to the extra case and hardware - for mounting at the top of the arm if desired. (I don't know why any one would want to install and use the top/side mount)? Compared with a more expensive competitor I liked the Siru price and I'm satisfied with the hardware. Again, have only mounted my wife's Canon 600mm f/4 II on the gimbal head for an in the house review. Great so far.
