The 1TB MiniStation Thunderbolt/USB 3.0 Portable Drive with Cables by Buffalo Technology gives you the three S's that all data managers and curators need - storage, style, and speed. This 1TB drive now features both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt connectors for the ultimate in fast transfers - if you're a PC users engaging the USB 3.0 port, you'll see transfers at 12x the speed of USB 2.0, roughly 5Gbps. If you're a Mac user, using the Thunderbolt port, you'll see twice that - transfer speed approaching 10Gbps. Yikes.

Housed in a sleek aluminum body, this portable speed demon can easily be placed in a bag or carrying case and moved from workspace to workspace. There's no additional power supply to carry because the unit is bus-powered - it runs from power supplied to the connector from the host computer.

Although the MiniStation drives are formatted out of the box as HSF+ for Mac users, a simple reformat makes the drives PC accessible in either FAT32 or NTFS partitions. It's also Time Machine compatible, so you can get a complete Mac data backup immediately. You can also daisy-chain up to six Thunderbolt devices together, so using the MiniStation as one of the drop points in a server chain is possible (please note that because there is only one Thunderbolt port on this unit, it must be placed at the end of the chain).

You can even forget about the added expense and time of tracking down cables - this unit comes with both a USB 3.0 cable and a Thunderbolt cable, which separately can cost over $60. You can start transferring, storing, and securing data as soon as you open the box.

Unparalleled Speed
MiniStation Thunderbolt features the revolutionary Thunderbolt technology, raising the bar on how you transfer, store and transport data. Delivering speeds up to an amazing 10 Gbps, it is the fastest interface available, 2X faster than USB 3.0, ideal for creative professionals and multimedia enthusiasts. Additionally, you can daisy-chain up to six Thunderbolt devices to maximize use of a single port.
USB Compatibility
Coupled with the lightning-fast Thunderbolt technology is a USB 3.0 port for universal connectivity. Simply plug it into any available USB port on your computer and instantly add capacity or store files to take on the road. Plug and play usability means there are no drivers to install and MiniStation Thunderbolt is pre-formatted for Mac computers but can easily be reformatted for use with PCs.
Time Machine Backup
MiniStation Thunderbolt is pre-formatted for use with Mac and is compatible with Time Machine for complete data backup. Schedule backups and automatically protect your important files with plug and play connectivity.
Compact and Convenient
Housed in a sleek aluminum body, MiniStation Thunderbolt is a stylish storage companion for your laptop while on the go and at home. Designed for mobility, it offers bus-powered portable storage for your data and for your on-the-go lifestyle. It works with Mac and PC so you can access your files from whichever computer you are on, even while away from home.
All Cables Included
MiniStation Thunderbolt is a complete portable Thunderbolt storage solution, supplied with all necessary cables and components. Simply plug it in to any available Thunderbolt or USB port on your Mac or PC computer and instantly add capacity or securely store files to take on the road.

B&H has the best price on this thunderbolt drive! It is as simple as plugging in. It is styled to fit your mac product line. It is light weight, MAC format ready, using it to store virtual machines & time machine backups.

It comes with the cables for thunderbolt & USB. It is USB 2.0 & 3.0 compatible. I can backup my MAC & save the time capsule on my NAS by plugging in directly with USB.

If I were to say something bad about it, it gets warm.

I use the product to shuttle libraries back and forth between myself and others. Its certainly nice that it comes with its own Thunderbolt cable. The speed of the drive when moving data seems to be about twice the speed of a Firewire 800 drive. I'm running off of a 7200 RPM drive at the moment and I'm waiting to see if transfers speed up any after installing a SSD.

It comes in an aluminum casing which is nice. Its about the same size as my G-Tech mobile drives so that is cool. I wish it had a second Thunderbolt port so other drives could be chained through it. I use a non Apple display with my laptop so when I want to use the drive i have to unplug my second monitor. I could just use it with the USB port but that sort of defeats the purpose of Thunderbolt doesn't it?

I am somewhat concerned about its durability but I've only had the drive for three weeks so we'll see how that goes. For now i'm gentle but we'll see how it holds up to airline travel in the near future. If it holds up I do plan on buying another one of these so they mirror each other.

I bought this because of it's size and the thunderbolt connection. It really is exactly as advertised and I couldn't be happier. It is a bit pricey but it is quite affordable compared to other thunderbolt externals.

Comments about Buffalo 1TB MiniStation Thunderbolt/USB 3.0 Portable Drive with Cables:

I bought a small pile of these to issue my film students. They use FCP X which is really built around using fast, portable, thunderbolt drives. These have been through one semester and have survived well enough. Putting the fear of God into students about replacement costs helps in this matter, but still. Accidents happen as does jostling. And these are a significant upgrade to the old G-Drive Firewire 800 drives I have, which are now relegated to backup duty. I like that they are self-powered and come with the cable, which is a total racket otherwise. The case also is a little bit matte finish, which will take writing from a Sharpie to identify the unit with semipermanent inventory info. Also comes in a small enough cardboard box without excess packaging that makes it easy to give to students.

My only suggestion for improvement would be to have a pass-through port. For me, this would mean plugging into the back of my 8TB WD powerbook and chaining a series of drives to copy stock footage onto a series of drives all at once. But alas, few products are perfect.

They DO get hot if you run a lot of data through them. But I think that is pretty much all thunderbolt drives, esp small ones.

Just started Using it. I find it great to Edit on the Go. With a Mac Book Pro and the MiniStation I have it all and since it does not need AC it's perfect to set it up quick.

I'd like it to have more processing power and speed.

Comments about Buffalo 1TB MiniStation Thunderbolt/USB 3.0 Portable Drive with Cables:

I purchased this little Drive for a storing video and photos from a 2 week shoot. Quiet, True Plug and Play on my Macbook Air, this drive has excellent build quality and asthetics. With effective grip strips onthe bottom and included Thunderbolt and USB 3 Cables, the Buffalo 1TB MiniStation has worked without a hitch. I used iMovie to quickly deliver next day videos for my clients to enjoy from the previous days events, and the Ministation proved to be the perfect companion, as traveling light was a priority! On one video I recorded a voiceover, and it was nice to not worry about any unwanted noise from the unit. The only negative was this drive will run "hot" during rendering of video projects. Just short of holding it in your hand "hot"! But having used various External Hard Drives, the 1TB Buffalo MiniStation sits at the top, providing a better Per-Gigabyte value for the money, especially with the included interconnects!

Aesthetically pleasing; matches the similarly colored MACs.

Inclusion of Thunderbolt and USB3 cables is a major plus!

I'm using this as an editing stopgap for a client. They're keeping a backup of all the files, but they're spread over a lot of external drives so I bought this to accumulate all the footage while I edit it. The project revolves around 500 short form videos, 1000 GIFs and 1000 Stills, so you can see how it eats up space very quickly. Being able to edit directly off of the Buffalo drive saves a lot of internal hard drive space as well and thanks to the Thunderbolt connection there's minimal performance lost. Last and best of all is that it's bus powered and super compact. LOVE it.

If you're using a SATA II 3.0 GBs disk drive, then merely using a Thunderbolt cable is not going to more than triple the transfer speed. You're limited by the SATA II 3.0 GBs connection.

Thunderbolt is great! Not WAY faster than USB 3.0 but DEFINITELY faster. Simple plug-and-play. Adds storage to a 2012 MacBook Pro with a 256gb SSD. Best of both worlds: super fast SSD with plenty of room on the MiniStation for media/etc.

Great product, I bought two on the initial purchase and they both are working well. I like that this product has two outputs - Thunderbolt (great speed) and the USB 3 which is backward compatible with USB 2 devices. I use these on two different MacBook Pros that I have. One is an older 17" version (no Thunderbolt) and the other is a new 15" Retinal display version. It works very well on both and I am able to take my Aperture libraries with me as I travel. If I had any wish that could turn 4 stars into 5 stars it would be for this product to be available as an SSD drive with at least 960 MB to 1 TB capacity (larger without a larger footprint would be even better)

I'm using this with Time Machine on a Mac desktop (with OS 10.7 Lion) for backups. Of course I can't yet comment on the drive's long-term performance, but setup was a snap. I plugged in the Thunderbolt cable, turned on Time Machine, and I was done. The Buffalo drive fits perfectly on the base of the iMac display. It even looks as if it had been designed to go along with the Mac. Copying about 225 GB of data from the Mac to the Buffalo drive using Thunderbolt took about an hour, I think. The external drive is a bit warm to the touch, but that mild drawback is the only negative I can think of.

Drive came with both a thunderbolt cable and USB3 cable. The thunderbolt cable transferred my video files relatively fast (It is limited due to the top speed of the hard drive inside) but it is still very fast. (ex. 10GB under 4-5Min)

I bought this drive due to thunderbolt cabling vs. a WD passport or Seagate. It was already set-up for my mac OS and It was my intent to open it open up (youtube video) and pull the platter drive and install and SSD drive from crucial memory to take full advantage of the thunderbolt cable transfer speed, but unless your in a crazy hurry, this thing transfers GB size files at a very acceptable rate of speed.

I highly recommend this drive if you own a mac book pro and need some extra space.
