Vanguard's Alta Pro 254 Carbon Fiber Tripod With SBH-50 Ball Head includes a tripod made of 6X carbon fiber to provide a lightweight (3.46 lb) but very sturdy and versatile camera support. It extends to 5.08', and folds down to only 20.9" which makes it easy to attach to a gear bag, or backpack.

The included SBH-50 ball head is compact (3.5"), lightweight (10.2 oz), and features 2 bubble levels for precision attitude adjustment. It also has a safety locking system for quick release, and a single knob locking mechanism. It supports cameras, lenses and camcorders up to 13.2 lb. This head increases camera stability and provides faster, more accurate camera positioning.

The four-section legs, which can be independently positioned at 25, 50 and 80 degrees, add to this tripod's versatile positioning capabilities. The legs are quickly secured into their position with one-twist leg locks.

The tripod's center column has a tilting bracket which can rotate a full 360 degrees from a standard vertical position. It is a key feature to help you position the tripod and your equipment at unusual angles. Plus, the column is spring-loaded to provide your equipment with protection against shocks. The column comes with a retractable weight hook from which you can attach a gear bag for added stability on any terrain.

Vanguard's Single Piece Ball Unit Technology incorporates the ball and stem of the ball head into one solid unit which provides a core strength that's resistant to degradation from everyday use. The ball head's Advanced Magnesium Housing System couples a rugged magnesium exterior with a hollow interior to provide the precision, fluid-like movements of a standard head minus extraneous weight. The SBH-50 is supplied with two QS-39 quick release plates so you can easily alternate cameras on and off the ball head.

The Alta Pro 254CT is a popular choice for those who need a tripod that is flexible and easy to set up. It meets the needs for landscape, wide angle and macro photography and a wide range of other applications.

Very nice product. If anything it might be helpful if there was a better way to compare multiple products at the same time. Since there are at least 1000 different makes and models I see the problem. However I probaby had 40 hours or research in choosing this product.

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 254 Carbon Fiber Tripod With SBH-50 Ball Head:

If you want the most bang for your buck, the whole Vanguard Alta Pro line is unsurpassed.I purchased an Alta Pro 283 CB 100 for my heavy Canon 7D plus 70-200 lens. Couldn't be more satisfied. My wife shoots a Canon Rebel 3ti, lighter--and so is she. We checked her cam out on my tripod and it was overkill for her cam and carrying ability, so we searched for a more compact and lighter tripod.Aha! The solution seemed to be the Alta Pro 254 SB-50. I wondered about downgrading to the SB-50 ball head, not knowing. But, for the lighter Rebel, it is rock solid and presents itself as rugged and smooth as the SB-100. And! And I don't know why, other than Vanguards superlative engineering, the little tripod is rock solid stable. All this in a compact, light weight machine that my beautiful, little wife can carry no sweat. If I had another wife, we would have bought two! Can't say enough for the Vanguard Alta Pro series. The line presents solutions for every need. The BH guys will guide you to selecting the right one for your needs. They are awesome.

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 254 Carbon Fiber Tripod With SBH-50 Ball Head:

I didn't find many reviews of tripods from users with micro 4/3 cameras, so I wasn't sure how to translate the reviews with larger SLR's. I had identified a Manfrotto that I thought might work pretty well, but it was aluminum and the carbon fiber version was very expensive. I asked a B&H advisor what he would suggest as an alternative and he recommended the Vanguard 284 with the SBH-100 head. I liked the features and price and ordered one. I considered the 254, but didn't see that it also came with a head at a special price, so I went with the 284. In the meantime a friend found the 254 package and I also ordered one of those. The 254 suits my purposes better. It is lighter and smaller, but still seemed very solid and stable with my OM-D, even with the 300-600 equivalent telephoto on it, and when used for macro shooting with the center column at an angle. I imaging there are applications (strong winds and long exposures) where the 284 might improve stability, but I was willing to make that trade-off. Both seemed very well made, full-featured, and smooth functioning and didn't scrimp on the accessories (e.g., bag).

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 254 Carbon Fiber Tripod With SBH-50 Ball Head:

Just used it a few times so far, but stable in any position I've put it in. The ball head works well and holds its place. The release buttons for the legs are a little hard to press, but like the weight and ease of extension of legs. Can't wait to try it for macro. Just wish it were a little bit lighter.

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 254 Carbon Fiber Tripod With SBH-50 Ball Head:

I do a variety of photography work, from landscapes, babies to weddings. I'm also a photography student, hoping to gain more photography knowledge. I have been using cheap pan tilt tripods since I picked up my first DSLR 5+ years ago and broken many of them. I just could not make myself take the plunge and spend the money on a quality tri-pod. That is until the last one snapped as I tightened the pan and I almost lost my gear into a river.

There are tripods out there that cost way less than this one and definitely some that cost way more, but I could not be happier with my purchase. The carbon fiber is super light and the ease of use is amazing. I was overwhelmed taking it out of the box, never having used anything than the basic pan tilt, but it took no time at all to learn the functionality. The amount of things this tripod can do is awesome. I love the quarter turn twist locks on the legs. The bubbles ensure every photo is perfectly aligned. It holds your gear in place and there is no drifting. The feet spikes give it added stability and if you want even more, the hook on the center column can be used to weigh it down.

I really liked the fact this tripod came with a lifetime warranty. This gave me a lot of reassurance when spending the amount of money I did. It passed the approval of my teacher who seems to like collecting every type of camera gear there is and has played around with many of these.

I honestly have found nothing about this set-up I don't like.

My typical gear is the Canon 40D, 17-55 and a 580ex II. It holds this no problem.

I bought this tripod specifically to take outdoors with me, mostly on long hikes. My previous tripods were either too heavy or not durable enough. My new Carbon Fiber tripod by Vanguard has all of the features that make tripod shooting convenient, and is also extremely light weight. It is a perfect addition to my growing photo gear collection.
