The tripod has a maximum load capability of 18 lb, extends to 63", and folds down to only 21.12", which makes it very easy to transport. The SBH-100 Ball Head is an impressive, lightweight (15.9 oz) support that will keep equipment up to 22 lb securely and accurately positioned on your tripod, aided by two built-in bubble levels.

The 4-section legs can be independently positioned at 25, 50 and 80° to allow positioning of the tripod at low and unique angles and are quickly secured into position with one-twist leg locks. The center column has a tilting bracket which also helps to achieve unusual camera positioning and is spring-loaded to provide your equipment with protection against shocks and vibrations.

Vanguard's Single Piece Ball Unit Technology incorporates the ball head's ball and stem into one solid unit which provides a core strength that is resistant to degradation from everyday use. The Advanced Magnesium Housing System couples a rugged magnesium exterior with a hollow interior to provide the precision, fluid-like movements of a standard head minus any extraneous weight. This ball head only weighs 15.9 oz . It comes with two QS-39 quick release plates which make it easy and convenient to remove one camera from the ball head and replace it with another.

The Alta Pro 284 CT is a popular choice for those who need a tripod that is flexible, easy to set up, and meets the needs for landscape, wide angle and macro photography applications.

This vanguard 284ct with the sbh100 ball head works like a dream, and for Canadian customers, B&H shipping and service was second to none,The rock bag is not included, but 2 camera plated are included. Even with semi heavy lenses like the 70-200 2.8 it is rock solid.

Well designed and well made. Very good value comapred to the overpriced Italian near equivalents.
The ability to configure the legs to get near to ground level was the main reason I chose this tripod. Not as light as the ideal but that should make it more stable.
The head works well with a Canon5D III and my Canon 70-200 F4 or my Canon 400 f5.6

Offers more stability than my old tripod for heavier lenses. stronger head with levels and adjustable center column, especially for macro work. It is somewhat heavier than my older tripod and the carrying bag could be better: zipper with inside pocket would be nice

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 284 CT Carbon Fiber Tripod With SBH-100 Ball Head:

I had looked at cheaper carbon fiber tripods at [*] since I don't use a trpoid all that much and was tired of lugging around my heavy one. But every time I picked up the [*] one it felt really cheap. So I ordered the Vanguard 284CT with SBH-100 head and it is fantastic. It's light weight but feels sturdy. One of the legs is a bit sticky when opening it up but maybe its just because it's new and needs to loosen up a little. But its just one leg. But it's not a problem. The legs are thick and even when fully extended, it feels rock solid and the handy hook at the bottom of the center column will hold your bag and make it really solid. I love the flexibility for using for macro work and that it has ring locks instead of twist locks that stick out and hang up on things.

            284 or 283???

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 284 CT Carbon Fiber Tripod With SBH-100 Ball Head:

I couldn't decide between the Alta Pro 284CB100 and the 283CB100 based upon BH description, professional and customer reviews. They are both excellent tripods, far exceeding what one would expect for the price.

It comes down to your application and camera gear. I want maximum stability for landscape work while standing up with viewfinder at eye level. My heaviest gear is a Canon 7D with 1.4 tele, the Canon F4 70-200 IS L lens and the Canon tripod collar, weighing 5 pounds total. The tripod collar mount keeps it from being teetery. I am 5' 9" tall.

Vanguard's model numbers, e.i. 283 and 284 designate that the maximum leg diameter is 28mm and the tripods have 3 or 4 leg sections.

I tested both. For my application the 283 won for two reasons.

First, the 283 put the viewfinder at eye level with the legs fully extended and without needing to raise the center column, hence, maximum stability at my working height.

Second, the 284 required full extension of all leg sections plus center column raised half way. The extra leg section is, of necessity, thinner, and might, under some circumstances, allow shake, though, on my smooth kitchen floor I didn't notice any.

So, what did I gain with the 283? Perhaps more stability, good working height without the extra work of extending another leg and the center column.

That's it. The difference in stability was minor, if even perceptable.

I don't care that the 283 weighs about 3/4 pounds more and is a couple of inches longer since I don't trek at my age. By the way, contrary to several customer reviews, the 283 does fit into the carrying case with the top of the case closed. Just fold the ball mount down into the vertical shooting slot.

I would have chosen the 284 if I wanted the lightest and shortest and if I wanted to max out the contortion advantages of 4 leg sections.

              They both are excellent machines.

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 284 CT Carbon Fiber Tripod With SBH-100 Ball Head:

First off, I don't do many reviews but I had to share about my experience with the combination of this tripod and the GH-300T Pistol Grip Ball Head. I'd never owned a Vanguard product before and I'm a huge fan now and decided to review both products.

I do mainly wedding and portrait photography, its a lot of hand held stuff, but for certain applications, you absolutely can benefit by having a versatile tripod.

I upgraded my tripod from a very decent Sunpak carbon fiber tripod, which, in its own right was a great deal (got it on closeout locally 4 years ago) but had become worn and wasn't as versatile as my professional demands have become.

This tripod is rock solid. The only hint of instability is when you have a large lens (coupled with an SLR + battery grip + speedlight) and you use the center column to offset too far. Even then, if you have the space you can make the base wide enough to make it work. Still, head and shoulders above the Sunpak.

The twist lock takes a bit of getting used to but once you get the hang of it, you can adjust the height with one hand while the camera is still attached.

I've only used this tripod for two weddings so far, one it was on mainly concrete, the other it was in slightly uneven grass and it performed equally well. I haven't had a chance to use the ball head that it comes with, because I purchased it with the aforementioned Vanguard Pistol grip head. The SBH-100 immediately went on my old tripod though as the build quality is far superior than the Sunpak pan head. I can say anyone wanting the ball head won't be disappointed.

It would be nice if the quick release plate were the same for all Vanguard products, but perhaps that's asking too much. During weddings, you may want to switch from a tripod to a monopod with another Vanguard head quickly, and you can't unless the two products take the same release plate.

My favorite feature is the center column both because it angles out for direct-down shots and creative/ergonomic angles, but it also has its own rotation control so you can use it as a 2nd (or 3rd with the pistol grip) pan head which makes for extremely easy maneuverability in confined spaces (the combinations will blow your mind once you mess with it a bit). This makes it great for 360 degree video pans when you don't want a fixed vertical axis.

It is a little heavier than I expected, but to me, that spells quality, the fact that it is compact is most important in terms of size.

The only thing I will say is that the bag it comes with leaves a little to be desired. While it is fairly good quality, it doesn't match the epic quality of the tripod itself. I immediately put this tripod in my Sunpak tripod bag which is leather/heavier nylon with a zipper instead of a draw string, and has a padded neoprene strap. The provided strap is also not comfortable enough to carry long distances (especially with the heavier weight I mentioned). This may sound like pointless moaning, but the experience of getting your gear to the shoot is sometimes as important to a pro photographer as the comfort of use during the shoot. I only mention this so that maybe Vanguard will step this up in the future.

All in all, the build of this tripod doesn't seem like it will be subject to as much wear and tear as my old tripod because there's higher quality fittings and less adjustment screws that become loose over time. Its just really well designed, and solidly manufactured. I'll get 5+ wedding seasons out of it, easy.

What a great value at this price point, this tripod is strudy, compact and light weigth. Unfolds easily, great ballhead, double lock secures the camera firmly, center column allows for a wide range of shooting angles. Can say enough great things about this tripod. It gets a lot of heavy use and it hasn't given me a problem yet.

I have recently stepped up to using canons L series lenses. With a bigger better lens comes more weight. My 2.8 70-200 canon lens is solid as it can be mounted to this tripod. Really impressed with the build Quality of this tripod. Easy to use and the legs are quarter turn so you can grab all three leg locks and open them with one turn of you wrist. ( very handy) This tripod will also get very close to the ground for those low angle shots. If this tripod is in your budget, buy it you wont be disapointed!

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 284 CT Carbon Fiber Tripod With SBH-100 Ball Head:

I just used this tripod for an engagement photo session in the Catskills. It is lightweight, which helped while walking up and down hills and through fields. The multiple positions on the legs were helpful, especially with the uneven ground. It is also super sturdy - I always had a steady, level shot. The twist leg locks make it a breeze to set up.

Plus, you can't beat the price for a good carbon fiber kit.

Take loads of nature photography and this tripod fits the bill so well. So light and easy to carry. Set up is a breeze and it handles my Pentax K5 with a 200 prime on it with no issues. Would definitely recommend this tripod.

Sturdy and works great. The head is easy to adjust & stays put with 24 to 70 lens. Have not tried it with my 70 to 200 yet. The quick release plate has to be attached with a coin. No "D" type ring so you can attach with just your fingers. A plate that would fit my manfroto heads would be great also.

This tripod stands really stable and it can be extend to a very tall hight. It allows you to do lots of different angles too. But one of the down side is that this tripod is a bit heavy when you need to do some long hour travel with you carrying around.

Have had this tripod for 2 weeks and I love it! Love the height and multiple angles it can be set to. Extends to about 6'3" with center column extended and ball head attached. Very sturdy. I have tried putting most of my body weight(175lbs)on it and it doesn't budge. Get the stone bag if you plan to have the center column at 90 degrees for extra stability.

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 284 CT Carbon Fiber Tripod With SBH-100 Ball Head:

This AP 284 CT tripod was purchased as an upgrade to replace a Vanguard Alta 203 AP. The 203 was purchased to use with a Canon Rebel. Although it is portable and light, the 203 is not sufficient to use with a larger Canon body.
The AP 284 is sturdy. It holds the larger Canon camera body and macro lens steady even when the center column is elevated. The tripod's weight is reasonable given the size of the tripod. Given the fact that this combo unit includes an SBH 100 Ball Head, it is a very good value.
A not too obvious disadvantage: While the Ball Head is useful for general photography, it is less than ideal for macro-photography where it is a challenge to position it for level vs composition. To overcome this aspect, I have removed the Ball Head and replaced it with a Vanguard pistol grip. I will see if that is more suitable.
Vanguard system disadvantage - The Alta pistol grip uses a different size quick detach plate than the plates used by the SBH 100 Ball Head, the 203 AP tripod and a Vanguard monopod.
