Questions? Ask our experts:

The white Sonos PLAY:3 Wireless Speaker delivers digital music with hi-fi sound. It works by connecting to an Internet source via Ethernet cable or built-in Wi-Fi. Once connected, you can play your music from your music library or stream music from Internet radio stations, as well as Internet music services.

The PLAY:3 features a three-driver speaker system with three dedicated amplifiers - one for each driver. There's one tweeter, two mid-range drivers, and one bass radiator. If one room or one speaker isn't enough, you can expand wirelessly by adding Sonos speakers all over your home. You can enjoy multi-room simultaneous streaming of the same song, or a different music source from each player. For added flexibility, you can control your PLAY:3 remotely via Android device, iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

Crystal-Clear, Room-Filling Sound

Three Speakers Powered by Three Dedicated Digital Amplifiers
The PLAY:3 uses three digital amplifiers individually coupled with three speakers to deliver sound to any room. The wireless music system provides pure, clean sound that is suitable for bringing room-filling music to a kitchen, bedroom, office, or just about any other room in your home. A bass radiator produces powerful low notes while two mid-range drivers and one tweeter fill out the sound

The three lightweight and powerful amplifiers are also energy efficient in both standby mode and during regular use
Tweeter
A single tweeter creates a crisp and accurate high-frequency response
Mid-Range Drivers
Dual dedicated mid-range drivers ensure the faithful reproduction of mid-range frequencies crucial for accurate playback of vocals and instruments
Bass Radiator
A bass radiator is tuned to use the energized air volume inside of PLAY:3 to provide deep, clean, and powerful bass from a small package
All-Digital Sound Architecture
The PLAY:3 reproduces the music as the artist intended. All filter settings, active equalization, and time-alignment are done in the digital domain through DSP circuitry, so there's no loss of audio quality or energy
Adjustable Bass & Treble Controls
Optimize sound performance using room-specific bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls. Adjust volume by individual room or by groups of rooms

I am a Smart home designer and professional installer of audio / video / computer / control equipment. I Endorse both wired and wireless home / office audio systems. On the most part I prefer wired systems where possible but when wireless is the best solution, Sonos is the system of choice. Experience has shown me that my clients are not as interested in the technology that drives the system but more the quality of the sound and how easy it is to operate the remote control. Sonos does very well in all three areas. The sound is clear and provides three speaker sizes suitable for all room sizes. In very large rooms multiple speakers can be designated to the same room. A Sonos speaker can be setup as a single stereo or as a left or right speaker. This feature is great for clients that wish to at first build a home system on a budget then later add a second speaker to a room for true left/right stereo separation. Each speaker has the capability to relay the Sonos wireless network so when you set up a multi-room system, lay the speakers out accordingly to best extend the signal. The user interface is very easy to learn and use. Sonos is quick to push out upgrades to stay up-to-date on newer content providers like Pandora and Spotify. They are always adding new providers when they become available. Installation is relatively simple and they have many sources of assistance available. I highly recommend the companion piece of adding a NAS drive to contain your music library. They come in 1, 2 or 4 drive units. A single drive is enough if you already have a means to make regular backups, if not, then I can not recommend strongly enough that you select the 2 drive version. These drive get a lot of use so having a mirror copy or a backup of your music library is a must. It is recommended that this type of external drive be used to minimize the use and abuse of the internal drive in your computer. One other nice undocumented feature / use of Sonos is that there are very easy to move around so for parties or when you need to have music outdoors, you can always just take the speaker out of a bedroom and place it on the terrace, backyard, or near the pool. Sonos is a good quality, easy to install and use, flexible audio system. May not be the cheapest but you can't have everything.

Add Sonos speakers to the long list of poorly executed wireless technology. In the case of Sonos, the system fails not because the speaker sounds lousy. It's a good enough speaker if you're playing MP3s. And the wireless works as well as most wireless -- with the usual interruptions and flakiness that unfortunately don't lend themselves well to audio playback. The system fails because Sonos will only allow you to use the speaker wirelessly through a poorly conceived proprietary iTunes-like application. Why!? Why?! Why?!Why do they think that people want to add ANOTHER stinking music manager application to iTunes, WinAmp, Windows Media or whatever else people may ALREADY use to manage their music? Why do they think I want to spend a gazillion hours retooling my audio for their average speaker system?! Argh! They could have designed their application to simply route outbound audio to their wireless transmitter, but they chose to build a clumsy and MANDATORY music library application instead. They chose to force their customers to redo what most of us have been doing already with the EXISTING clumsy software. So what I've ended up with is a speaker (which you can't turn off, by the way; it's always on) which requires me to connect a minijack to it if I want to play iTunes, or a CD, or video, or audio from any other source than their terrible player. There are a lot of good speakers out there for $ which would've been a better value than this.To cut Sonos some slack, I'll acknowledge that if you're willing to commit 100% to this system for playback that it will allow you to play your music library wirelessly and I don't really know what the "better" options are. They have management functions which allow you to play different music on multiple speakers in different rooms using the same library. I also want to note that you can control playback with your mobile phone if you're into that kind of thing. In my case, there is simply no reason to use it as designed and I should've just bought a nice pair of speakers that I could connect to a minijack. It would've allowed me vastly more options for things I could play back from my PC (and TV) and saved me money and the headache of another cludgy wireless device.

Comments about PLAY:3 Wireless Speaker (Black):

I was leery of spending this much money on a speaker but now that I have two of them I see the value. The sound that comes out of these is incredible. If you are wondering about stereo sound this speak play both channels, one out of each mid range speaker. If you have a single speaker in the room the farther away from the speaker you are the more stereo effect you get. The other great part is the amount of sound that you get out of one of these. I am never able to turn them up much past halfway as they are incredibly loud. And with the dedicated woofer on the back they have great low frequency response

I see my self purchasing at least one more of these and a few Play:1s for smaller rooms.

These are great speakers. I've had a SONOS 3 for 2-3 years and have loved it. Use it all of the time. So easy to use. I recently bought a second one and have added it to the same room. As great as the first one sounded by itself, having them paired provides an even better sound and gives me more flexibility as to how I might use them around the house. I put the second one on a Sanus stand (the first one sits on a counter or on something else when I move it around). With the stand I don't need to find something to rest the speaker on; all I need is a plug.

Comments about PLAY:3 Wireless Speaker (Black):

I bought this to use around the house when I need background music. It's pretty much perfect for that. I can plug it in anywhere and with a few presses on the app, I have music.

It's very, very simple to set up. I installed the app on my phone, and it found the speaker and set it up without any problems. I mostly stream, and the Sonos works well for that. TuneIn radio has a lot of variety, and it also works with Pandora and Spotify (though you have to have the premium version of Spotify). I don't have a large music library, so I can't say how well it works for that.

The audio quality is adequate. It's certainly better than a laptop speakers or most bluetooth speakers I've tried. It sounds a lot bigger than it actually is, and I haven't had any problems hearing it in any of the rooms in my house. Most of the time, I keep the volume under 1/4. But because it's small, it's not great for bass. I'm not much of an audiophile, so I can't say how well it actually works, except that I like how it sounds. I haven't heard any negative remarks about the sound quality from my roommates or friends, either.

I'd recommend it if you want a simple, "just works" experience, and don't care quite as much about audio quality.

Comments about PLAY:3 Wireless Speaker (Black):

We bought the PLAY:3 for the kitchen, to complement the playbar in the living room and the PLAY:1s in each of the bedrooms. This speaker is definitely stronger than the PLAY:1 and is perfect for the size of our kitchen to work in both the kitchen and dining areas. We are still undecided on whether we'll mount it - it isn't using important counter space at the moment, so it's fine on the kitchen counter, but we might mount it later.

Comments about PLAY:3 Wireless Speaker (White):

I love it. It was expensive, but worth every penny. I bought two of these, a Play 5, and a Play 1, and I think they are all really excellent. The sound quality is really good and I like the Sonos interface a lot. And it's incredibly easy to set up. The only thing I would like is if it could play music through iTunes Radio or iTunes Match...I haven't figured out how to do that yet.

I really like the Sonos system; within about ten minutes of opening the box of the first one, I realized that I "needed" to buy one of these for every room in my house, and for every member of my family, and... Unfortuantely they are too pricey for that, but the Sonos is a great system: Convenient, sounds great, reliable, very easy to use.

This was easy to set up, connect to a NAS music collection, and get rolling. It's perfect for our office, making it very easy for everyone to participate in selecting/vetoing music through a range of devices. Sound quality is quite good but won't blow you away. I have not tried any larger networks of players but have been very happy with this version. It also has good sound volume, although in a large space you won't be knocking down any walls. Bass is lacking, but isn't bad for the package size. Also includes wireless, something that many reviews seemed to have missed, so we can use it happily without a bridge.

I was concerned about the quality of sound from such a small speaker, but was pleasantly surprised...excellent sound. Highly reccomended.

I am an engineer that designs systems that are used when following the President with the Press Corps. I use this system to provide wireless feeds. In the past we used powered 110 volt speakers to distribute audio to all of the networks. This required us to use distribution boxes and cables to each speaker. When overseas we had to use transformers to convert power from 220 volts to 110 volts. Now with Sonos I now set the play 1's on each of the Network tables. I use My laptop a play 5 along with a bridge. This allows me to give the entire press corp a feed from my mixer by using the line in on the play 5. no longer the need to convert power or run cables with distribution. Each network has volume control at the table and I can also mute all when needed by the producer. Great use of a Great System. I can even provide the music that I want while setting up by using my Ipod as a source. For a closed system use the ethernet out on the laptop into the bridge for a closed system.

I bought this Sonos to use with a WD NAS (WD 8TB My Book Live Duo), the sound quality is amazing and the setup very easy. Additionally, I downloaded the application for my ipad/iphone that integrate well with the products and is easy to use
