Questions? Ask our experts:

The black Sonos PLAY:5 (Gen 1) Wireless Speaker delivers digital music with high-fidelity sound. It works by connecting to an Internet source via Ethernet cable or built-in Wi-Fi. Once connected, you can play your music from your music library or stream music from Internet radio stations, as well as many other Internet music services.

The PLAY:5 features a five-driver speaker system with five dedicated amplifiers - one for each driver. There are two tweeters, two mid-range drivers, and one bass driver. If one room or one speaker isn't enough, you can expand wirelessly by adding Sonos players all over your home. You can enjoy multi-room simultaneous streaming or you can listen to a different music source from each player. For added flexibility, you can control your PLAY:5 remotely via Android device, iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

Clear, Room-Filling Sound

Five Speakers Powered by Five Dedicated Digital Amplifiers
The PLAY:5 uses five digital amplifiers individually coupled with five speakers to deliver clear sound to any room. A subwoofer produces powerful bass while two mid-range drivers and two tweeters fill out the sound
Class-D Amplifiers
The powerful and lightweight amplifiers are energy efficient in standby mode and during regular use
Tweeters
Two tweeters create a crisp and accurate high-frequency response
Mid-Range Drivers
Dual dedicated mid-range drivers ensure the faithful reproduction of mid-range frequencies crucial for accurate playback of vocals and instruments
Subwoofer Driver
The system's dedicated subwoofer driver provides deep, powerful bass you can feel
All-Digital Sound Architecture
The PLAY:5 reproduces the music as the artist intended. All filter settings, active equalization, and time-alignment are done in the digital domain through DSP circuitry, so there's no loss of audio quality or energy
Acoustic Port
The acoustic port on the rear of the unit serves two purposes - it's vital to the sound output of the PLAY:5 when in use and it's also a convenient handle when moving it from one room to another
Adjustable Bass & Treble Controls
Optimize sound performance using room-specific bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls. Adjust volume by individual room or by groups of rooms

This is probably my 7th or 8th Sonos component. Love the system. A simple press of a button to set things up. With the Android and iPhone apps, there's no need to put out for added controllers. But I have two controllers from when I bought the system years ago and I love them both. They're more intuitive and simpler to use than the phone interface, although the phone interface is quite nice. Rhapsody, Pandora, and my music library are what I mainly listen to. Occasionally I'll call up internet radio. Last summer we had someone visiting from Albania and we played the local Albanian radio station via the internet. Good range. I have components in my basement, on tbhe first floor, second floor in the attic (home theater and game room) as well as outside at my pool. No communications issues at all. The Play 5 is good for what it is. It can be stationary. It can be moved around. The sound is pretty good. Not fabulous. But pretty good. Best thing I love about Sonos is the instant feedback. If we're talking about a song or a band (What was that song from back when you...?), BANG, with a few finger strokes you can have the song playing. Great for social gatherings. The Play 5 is a slick looking box that will fit into any decor. You can hide it. Or you can display it. But you must listen to it!

    ON SONOS GENERALLY:

The good: Most of the time I LOVE my Sonos system. I use Sonos in 7 locations in my very large appointment. It's the only solution I was able to find that kept music synchronized in all rooms, and I think Sonos has done an excellent job on linking to your private music library and streaming services, IF you like popular/rock/song-based music. I like the sound quality a lot, though with a big system like mine, you do get drop outs and lost speakers now and then. If you're an utter perfectionist this system may not be for you.

The Very very bad for classical music lovers: The interface is MUCH more frustrating for classical music, since Sonos's search function only shows TWO of the many fields shown in Itunes, and as classical music lovers know, Itunes was never good for classical music and has recently gotten even worse. Add that limitation to the inconsistancies in Gracenote.. and it WILL drive you crazy.

On balance, I love the convenience and sound quality of Sonos so much I'd buy it again, but I WISH WISH WISH Sonos would improve its indexing system. Sonos charges fully for the quality of it's equipment

ON THE Play 5: I have a couple Play 3's and i don't think they hold a candle to the Play
5's in bass response or transparency. Each play V also has a "line-in" jack, which allow you to
plub ANY componet (a tv, cd player, etc) into the speaker and play that component all over the house. The more play Vs you have the more compoents you can attach (I wish Sonos had some sort of hub that would allow to connect all your components in one spot, but you can't have everything).

I'm hardly an audiophile, and I'm nearly 60; with that caveat I think the sound from the V's are very good; and smashing if you add the (very expensive) Sonos Subwoofer.

Comments about PLAY:5 (Gen 1) Wireless Speaker (White):

Bought these SONOS Play5 .... Had to call tech support....They too were exceptionally courteous and PATIENT....and on the money. I tried to connect wirelessly....had an issue so I called SONOS and the tech told me to connect enclosed ethernet cable first...then walked me though the process... disconnected the ethernet cable ....VOILA... Perfect
We setup 2 one inside the house the other outside for BBQ with 60 people...IT DID THE JOB!!!!!! 110%... In my opinion...better than BOSE which I was considering.... the wireless connection NEVER failed through the walls and the distance of at least 30 ft. Unbelieveable Audio Quality... So, if you're thinking about speakers for your house or whatever...playable with iPhone, iPad, etc....SONOS PLAY5....and B&H for the great service and shipping!!!!

Comments about PLAY:5 All-in-One Wireless Music System (Black):

Sonos has done a great job at creating an integrated wireless speaker system, who's software is as well made as the hardware itself. You can set alarms, play radio, your iTunes music library, and internet music providers as well. It also looks nice as well.

The only criticism I have is that because it is a single speaker without purchasing another speaker you have a limited mono sound experience - but clearly the "Sonos System" expects you to have more than one speaker and its trivial to assign Left/Right channels. That said the price for a single speaker is high for the overall effect....so I'd recommend getting two and then whatever speaker series fits your budget.

Set it up in my home office- very quick, easy to carry out instructions without any technical jargon.
iPhone immediately synced and I was listening to my tunes.
Would like to have synced it with my Sonos 3 for stereo, but apparently you need two of the same model units to do that.
Plenty of volume and enjoyable output.

Comments about PLAY:5 (Gen 1) Wireless Speaker (White):

After much research into products from Sonos, Bose, Samsung and others, decided to go with Sonos speaker system. Quick easy setup; superb sound quality; more music options available including playing my own music catalog from hard disk without proprietary software; stereo capability is a plus; using Sonos software on computer, Android phones and tablets all at the same time to control music and volumes in each room; better price point. Started with Play 5 and two Play 1's. Will definitely be adding more speakers to complete whole house system. Would highly recommend Sonos!

I bought the Play:5 because of its line in feature. Once I got it home and hooked up, I found out it's even better than I'd thought!

It turns out that I can plug something into the line-in jack -- in my case, an Apple Airport Express -- and 'tune' my Play:1 to the input on the Play:5! This means that I can stream audio from my iPhone, iPad, or Mac to any of my Sonos speakers! And, it turns out, I can even stream a podcast or music track (from ANY app on my phone that supports AirPlay) to the Play:1, even when the Play:5 is itself playing something different, e.g. SiriusXM or Pandora!

Something that I think was a little disappointing is the fact that you can't play, let's say, "plain" audio from your computer ...for example to play a youtube video and make it sound through the Sonos ...not wirelessly.

these are better sounding than Bowes speakers. these are very easy to install and configure. easy iPhone control. We are using these in a showroom wired to the network. the wireless is great at home but in the showroom these is a lot of noise on the 2.4ghz and these speakers shut down every once in awhile. they would be assume if they were 5 ghz wireless

Comments about PLAY:5 All-in-One Wireless Music System (Black):

The Sonos Play 5 sounds great for the size speaker system that it is. The control software works great on my Samsung S5 (Android version 4.4.4) but not so great on my HTC Thunderbolt (Android version 4.0.4); it too often loses the Sonos network and can not find it for a while. Overall, I am very pleased and look forward to expanding the system. A major drawback is the high price!! Also, my daughter is having trouble with her Play 5 on her network – check the Sonos site to be sure that your network router is compatible before you buy (or you could change your router which is what she will do).

Give excellent sound in a compact package. Very easy setup and tremendous set of options to connect to a wide variety of network services like Google Play, Spotify, and Pandora to name a few. The sound really folks the room. Sounds better then Bose and others I have checked out.

                      Pros:
+Insanely easy to set-up wireless mode with iPhone ap (some reservations, note below...)
+Two Sonos Play: 5 in paired stereo are crisp and clear and clear separation.
+Plays from computer, iPhone, iPad, and other music services. Radio Stations available is simply awesome.
+Sonos tech help is very helpful and quickly responsive
                      Cons:
-Cannot stream from Apple iTunes Match (no access to Apple servers -- no fault of Sonos!)
-major problems playing FLACC or Apple Lossless unless Ethernet is wired to one of the speakers providing a "bridge" otherwise has "network issues." Feels like "wireless mode" is still in beta.
-iDevice ap could be a tad more intuitive -- presently clunky in playing back music -- will not recognize new downloaded music unless iDevice is shut-down and restarted.

Did a remodel recently and decided to go with the Sonos system, instead of dedicated wall or ceiling mounted speakers and central hardwired hardware. The Sonos system is very flexible, a cinch to setup, and provides great sound.

I am an engineer that designs systems that are used when following the President with the Press Corps. I use this system to provide wireless feeds. In the past we used powered 110 volt speakers to distribute audio to all of the networks. This required us to use distribution boxes and cables to each speaker. When overseas we had to use transformers to convert power from 220 volts to 110 volts. Now with Sonos I now set the play 1's on each of the Network tables. I use My laptop a play 5 along with a bridge. This allows me to give the entire press corp a feed from my mixer by using the line in on the play 5. no longer the need to convert power or run cables with distribution. Each network has volume control at the table and I can also mute all when needed by the producer. Great use of a Great System. I can even provide the music that I want while setting up by using my Ipod as a source. For a closed system use the ethernet out on the laptop into the bridge for a closed system.
