The Lumix G5 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with Lumix G Vario 14-42mm Lens (Black) from Panasonic is a recent addition to the Lumix line of Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM) cameras and brings with it a host of improvements as well as the Lumix commitment to quality optics. A compact design with built-in flash and ergonomically organized controls, the G5, in union with the Lumix G Vario 14-42mm lens, offers powerful photo and video performance resulting in top of the line image quality, sharp details and excellent resolution and color production. If you're interested in "going mirrorless", this is the camera for you.

A redesigned Venus Engine image processor and newly integrated 16.05 MP Live MOS sensor increase performance speed, improve Auto-focus and more so, render crisp and detailed images in both photo and video. The Venus Engine has improved its already advanced signal processing capabilities and with 3DNR and Multi-process NR can detect bright areas as well as smooth areas or edges within in an image and apply a multi-step noise reduction to further increase the sharpness of your photo. High Dynamic Range has been integrated on the G5 and will shoot several identical photos simultaneously in order to overlay them and create one perfectly balanced photo. In all Lumix G series cameras, the image sensor controls the auto focus. Called Contrast AF, it substantially improves focus accuracy, especially at brighter, smaller f-stops. The G5 has incorporated full-area Touch AF, making it possible to set focus on any point within the field of view and Light Speed AF in which focus is locked onto a moving subject. Combine these two elements with a burst rate of 6 frames per second (in full resolution!) and the G5 can shoot fast-moving objects, whether it be a flying bird or a fading smile, with DSLR-like accuracy.

The Live View Finder (LVF) on the Lumix G5 takes the standard view finder to another dimension. The adjustable eye sensor on the LVF senses the presence of an eye and switches the image output from the LCD screen to the eye piece. It also begins to Auto-focus as soon as it senses an eye, which can save you valuable microseconds when that is all you have to get the shot you want. The LVF is a large, bright 1,440,000-dot equivalent with approximately 100% field of view while the LCD display is a full 920,000-dot high resolution screen with wide-viewing angle and also offers 100% field of view. In addition, the LCD offers touch screen operation for basic shooting and playback and rotates 180º to the side and 270º up and down for easier image composition. Most impressive is that with Touch pad function, both the LCD and LVF can be on at the same time for more intuitive shooting. The lag time from shot to LCD output has been minimized on the G5, so monitoring fast moving subjects is better than ever.

A simple but welcomed advancement on the G5 is the Electronic Shutter mode which allows silent shutter operation for a totally silent capture. The G5 has also updated its physical design to be more ergonomically friendly. The new function lever near the shutter release button can control zoom with some lenses, aperture in manual mode and can magnify images in playback. More so, in combination with the camera's rear dial it can adjust all major shooting settings. This is a huge design improvement that will help all shooters focus on the essentials as opposed to searching for the right button to push.

Of course, the Lumix G5 also produces Full HD 1080 60p video and the improvements in sensor and image processing have pay-off for video quality as well. Touch AF in video mode allows selective focusing adjustment during shooting and Tracking AF keeps focus on a subject while it moves. A dedicated video button is the only button needed to start shooting video and while shooting video, simple touch of the shutter release allows for photos to be taken during video capture.

Despite its high performance capability, the G5 also hosts an array of beginner friendly scene guides which allow the user to choose a pre-fabricated scene closest to the one they'd like to shoot and the camera will adjust its settings to accommodate that scene. Now with fourteen Creative Control Mode filters including Soft Focus and One Point Color, the G5 can recommend filters that will enhance your photography. These assistive controls are in addition to the Lumix iA (Intelligent Auto) which will integrate all of its assist functions into one setting and let the camera do all the work. Sometimes that's the best way to get the photo you need.

The Panasonic Lumix G5 will work with the full line of G series lenses but in this case it comes complete with the Lumix G Vario 14-42mm lens. This is a standard zoom lens with the focal lengths to shoot almost any day to day needs, from landscapes and sunsets to friends and family. Its 35mm equivalency is 28-84mm which is very inclusive and aperture runs from f/3.5(wide) to f/22. It is a multicoated lens to eliminate light flares and its Auto-focus and Auto-exposure functions are fully supported in both photo and video modes. It is an ideal lens to start your foray into compact mirrorless shooting with the Lumix G5.

New Advanced Image Processor
A redesigned Venus Engine features exceptionally advanced signal processing capabilities, producing clear, crisp images in both photo and video recording. The 3DNR detects smooth areas or edges in photos and adjusts the strength of noise reduction (stronger for smooth portion, milder for edge portion) to maintain object descriptiveness. The Multi-process NR quickly detects brightness in each part of a picture and applies optimal noise reduction in multiple steps. The newly incorporated HDR (High Dynamic Range) allows for several pictures consecutively shot at different exposure levels to be overlaid, producing a single composite picture to eliminate over-exposure or under-exposure.
LCD Display
A large, 920,000-dot high resolution LCD screen with wide-viewing angle rotates 180º to the side, tilts 270º up and down and offers approximately 100% field of view. Touch screen operation on the LCD screen allows for simple shooting or playback of images and the new Touch Pad function enables the use of both LVF and LCD simultaneously. Lag time of image output has been minimized by approximately 18% compared to the LUMIX G5's predecessor, the LUMIX G3, making it easier to monitor fast-moving subjects.
Auto-focus
Auto-focus is controlled by the sensor, increasing focus accuracy especially with wide apertures. Touch AF makes it possible to set focus on any point in the field of view and Light speed AF locks focus on a fast-moving subject.
Ergonomics and Function Lever
A new function lever conveniently located near the shutter release allows for direct adjustment of zoom, exposure or aperture control and can be used to magnify images in playback mode and page flip in menu mode. Additionally, using the function lever and rear dial in combination allows users to adjust major shooting settings.
Silent Electronic Shutter
The newly added Electronic Shutter mode allows silent operation which is helpful in areas where silence is needed.
Full HD 1080 60p Video
The Lumix G5 offers the ability to record high-resolution full-HD 1920 x 1080 60p videos in AVCHD Progressive (MPEG-4) or 30p in MP4 format. Subjects with fast motion and fine details are reproduced clearly. In addition to practical full-time AF, the Touch AF in video recording allows the focus to be shifted while shooting video. Video recording begins instantly with the push of one dedicated button and still photos can be taken during video shooting with just a push of the shutter release.
Beginner Friendly Scene Guides, Creative Control Mode and iA
The Lumix G5 offers 23 sample professional photos which the user can choose from in order to match the shot they would like to take. Once chosen, the camera will adjust its settings accordingly and your resulting photo will look as good as the pro's. Creative Control Mode now offers 14 filter options which switch seamlessly and give your photo various effects such as Dynamic Monochrome, Soft Focus and Star Effect. The Lumix series iA (Intelligent Auto) integrates all of the cameras assistive functions to create the perfectly balanced images you compose.
Lumix G Vario14-42mm Lens
This 14-42mm Lumix lens is included with the purchase of the Lumix G5 camera body. With a 35mm focal length equivalency of 28-84mm, this is a great everyday go-to lens that incorporates true wide angle and telephoto dimensions to allow you to shoot everything from wide-open landscapes to close-up expressions. The G5 is fully compatible with the entire line of Lumix G series lenses.

To me, the G5 is Panasonic's sleeper camera, and meant for people who are primarily photographers rather than videographers.
I run my G5 with the superb but costly new 12-35 f2.8 Panasonic lens, which is equivalent to the workhorse 24-70 lenses used by pro's everywhere.
But the best feature of the G5 is its user interface. The best camera you have isn't necessarily the one you have with, but one that you can set up quickly without going through time consuming menus that test your recall. Neither people nor pets wait for a photographer.

Like other G cameras, its Q.Menu uses a strip of icons representing major functions such as WB and ISO speed. You can customize them from another strip above containing many of the key camera functions. Use your finger to drag a function icon onto the bottom strip. Once set up, just press the Q.Menu button and press the WB, ISO or other icon in the strip. Simple, fast and effective. In addition, there are four function buttons (two on the touch screen) that can complement your customization.
So, I can set up the camera beforehand for general shooting conditions using Q.Menu. Holding the LCD open, I can press the area I want to focus on and shoot quickly as another option, (the G5 will fire when you touch some area within the display), or I can customize the AF/AE lock button to lock focus on the area I selected, recompose and shoot as needed. The camera calculates the exposure as it fires a shot. Or you can do the opposite: press the button to lock exposure and the camera focuses when you fire it. The G5 also can be set up to focus as soon as you look into the EVF up top, so as long as you understand how the auto focus is going to work, you can operate very, very quickly. If you have selected Face Recognition, say in your Q.Menu customization, then as soon as you look in the EVF, the camera will seek a face for its focus point.
This simplifies the life of a street photographer.

Other things I like about the G5:
The new sensor is clean up to 1600 (for me) and doesn't require much noise reduction in LightRoom.
Intelligent Auto (iA) works pretty well when you need to get off a shot quickly and have no time to set the camera up. It's a one-button press on the top plate.
Video quality is excellent. I just set it in iA mode and it does a remakably good job at exposure,WB and auto-focus
    It's fairly compact.
Image quality of the micro four-thirds cameras just gets better and better, provided you have a good lens (surprise). Their weakness remains at low EV levels, which is one reason to have a fast lens and/or flash when the light isn't so good

As a high-end hobbyist I was looking for quality results; as a tired traveler I was looking for portability and ease of use. The compact size and lighter weight (also attributable to the mirrorless technology) provided that, and the output quality is more than acceptable. The only real problem is that the controls are overly complicated. Even choosing/changing the flash mode is hard to figure out. Ultimately, after being unable to master various modes in the few weeks before the first trip I took this camera on, I ended up shooting almost exclusively in the "IA" (intelligent auto) mode. Luckily, with automatic bracketing, this almost always produced good results. The 14-42 kit lens works fine, but feels cheap. I'd spring for the pancake option.

    amazing dslm!

    By luis

Comments about Panasonic Lumix G5 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with Lumix G Vario 14-42mm Lens (Black):

this is my first venture into the micro 4/3rds camera systems, and after using canon and nikon dslr's for the last few years, I can say I'm hooked! the selective autofocus, ability to take photos while recording full hd video, and the ease of use really helps with the transition from dslr to dslm. although the touchscreen could be a bit more responsive, and the lens could be a lot smoother when implimenting manual zoom. this is a wonderful starter kit for those looking for the power and versatility of a dslr in a much more compact and budget friendly package! I have already done a few photoshoots with this camera, and plan to shoot some video with it soon! I highly reccommend this camera to any photography enthusiasts!

Comments about Lumix G5 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with Lumix G Vario 14-42mm Lens (Black):

I bought the G5 because I had used the GH3 before as one of my video production cameras in my work capacity, and it had been surprisingly useful and superb in both quality and capabilities. I bought the G5 as a personal camera because it offers a lot of capability for the price. It shoots solid video until your SD card is full, rather than being limited to a certain length. It shoots both mp4 and AVCHD, so it is suited for casual family videos with the smaller, efficient MP4 format and offers the higher quality format with the more cumbersome file structure for more serious projects. It is not the same as some of its more expensive competitors though. It takes a little learning to maneuver one's way around it. It doesn't have a convenient manual focus switch. It doesn't have an external microphone input. It's touch screen is both a blessing and a pain in the neck, but the nuisances can be overcome by learning to work with it. The lens is good but limiting, but with the micro 4/3 mount, lens adapters are available for almost all other lens brands. I have enough lenses for other cameras by now that I buy the adapters and simply resign myself to working manually with a great selection of lenses. I did notice that the display doesn't stay on in certain positions.

I have been looking for a higher quality camera than a point and shoot to take hiking, but didn't want the weight and size of a full size DLSR. This camera is the perfect size and not any larger than my Lumix DMC-FZ18. The lenses are also very compact. The picture quality is fantastic. I am just starting to learn the advanced features. Highly recommended.

This was my first purchase of a micro 4/3rds camera. I have purchased many items from B&H many years ago. B&H has always been fair priced with a quick delivery time and the product as described + nicely packed. This product was no exception.
The camera is discontinued, it seems to be working well, need to try it
out in different situations. The size is nice. I bought this camera to take
on vacation and not have to carry around a DSLR & a camcorder. I will add a
nice lens to this camera and see what it can really do in the future. Thanks B&H for your great service.

I used only point and shoots before, and didn't want to upgrade to DSLR. This seems perfectly fitting my needs and in a manageable size

Comments about Lumix G5 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with Lumix G Vario 14-42mm Lens (Black):

I use this as my carry everywhere camera. With the 14-42 lens it fits nicely into a small fanny pack or small shoulder bag. The camera is, for me, a perfect combination of image quality and size. This was purchased on closeout and is no longer available but based on my experience with this camera I wouldn't hesitate to purchase the G6 which succeeded it. I mainly shoot in aperture preferred mode and the zoom lever just behind the shutter button acts as the exposure compensation control. Along with the rear control wheel to control aperture this makes for a quick to set up machine. I also purchased Panasonic's 45-200 lens this gives me a combo that covers from 28 mm to 400 mm equivalent in a package weighing less than three pounds. There are a few foibles The camera is battery hungry so purchase an extra or two. Images are a little noisy above ISO 800 but are easy to correct in post processing. I've accidently changed a few settings while working but for the most part I've been quite satisfied with the purchase

Comments about Lumix G5 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with Lumix G Vario 14-42mm Lens (Black):

I love the versatility of the g5 i can take awesome portraits as well as amazing action shots. The camera set up is simple just dont mess with the given instructions they are not user friendly. Go to this link it made a night and day difference in my shots this man is a pro and managed to make sense of Panasonics horrible instruction booklet. So far the only bummer about the camera is the lack of external microphone capability--The video is too clean to describe--it does have stereo microphones built in but when filming my band perform it would have been nice to place the microphones left and right at a distance to eliminate crowd noiseBottom line is that i ordered this camera on a friday and recieved it within 5 days.this is the 3rd lumix i have purchased from B&H and they have never failed to deliver a great product in a timely manner.

I need to have a tool for making good pictures as well as making my own movies. In the beginning I meant to buy an SLR (Alpha SLT-A57), but it is quite bulky, especially when you are hiking. So I have turned to G5 - camera that have comparable possibilities, but much lighter.

I bought this camera expecting a step-up in quality and dynamic range from my Panasonic point and shoot cameras (FZ40 superzoom and zs15 compact). I was quite disappointed to discover that this camera produces pictures that are no better than either of these smaller and more convenient cameras. The dynamic range is very disappointing - no better than the small sensor cameras. The sharpness and color are also no better - in fact, most of the images are softer. I would recommend that if you have a good point-and-shoot and are looking to step up to improved picture quality, skip this camera and go for a SLR with an APS-C size sensor and a higher dynamic range.

Excellent and full featured micro four thirds camera. Light and easy to carry around and the electronic viewfinder is quite usable. The kit lens is OK for casual use although the zoom ring is not smooth. Highly recommended camera, although it has been upgraded to the new G6. But this camera offers better value. Good video quality.

After having used a Konica Minolta for years, the Lumix DMC G5K is great! Smaller, yet better optics and features. Lens changes are quick and secure. The response time of the optics is very fast. This is the fifth camera I've bought from B&H, and they have all served me well in my photography work.
This is a good starter camera, or good upgrade for a pro shooter.

I've had the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5 for a week and I am very happy. I'm still learning how to set the camera up (there are plenty of great blogs out there with info) and it has all the functions that I need as a beginner photography enthusiast.

The body is solid and I like the grip which makes it easy to hang on to. The menu is easy to navigate and buttons and toggles can be customised as shortcuts.

Purchased the Panasonic G5 with kit lens at what I assume is a closeout price, well after the introduction of the G6. Compared to the very high prices attached to the latest generation of offerings from Olympus, the Panasonic G5 brings a more than satisfactory level of imaging quality at near giveaway cost.

Comments about Lumix G5 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with Lumix G Vario 14-42mm Lens (Black):

B&H is selling this camera with a 14-42 lens for less than the body alone. Must be making room for the G6. I couldn't pass it up. I've had it for a week and have no regrets. Using 45-200 lens at the moment.
                        My opinions so far:

Image quality is better than the P7100 but not as good as D7100, D700 and Canon 5D MKII. The difference is not that great.
The auto focus is fast and reliable.
The EVF is no match for a OVF and takes adjusting to. Its bearable.
Battery life is not great and a second is almost mandatory.
I'm getting accustomed to the menus and touch screen. I wish there was a standard for all manufacturers. Touch screen is not as reliable as the buttons.
The flash is OK but could be more powerful. Lenses cast a shadow at close distances. There is a hot shoe so there are options.
There is an optional remote but it needs to be mounted in the hot shoe so you can't use a flash (disappointing).
The articulating monitor is a nuisance. It just feels awkward hanging off to the side so I leave it facing out. Hope it doesn't damage easily. I prefer the tilting type.
I don't care for video and never use it. Wish I didn't have to pay for it.

I like higher end cameras and this isn't one but its got good IQ and is small and light, easy to carry and use. I sold my P7100.

This camera doesn't make me want to sell my DSLRs but it will definitely be my go to camera when I'm traveling light.

Comments about Lumix G5 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with Lumix G Vario 14-42mm Lens (Black):

Great camera! Takes a little getting used to if this is new to you. Pictures are clear and crisp. I am used to a smaller camera, so having two lenses and the body is something I am learning to love. Very sturdy camera and lense. The only thing I would change is the lense cap is sort of loose.

This is a great beginners camera.Video is excellent. Stills are good in normal lighting with the kit lens. Touch screen is responsive and easy to use. The touch AF works well. White balance is hit and miss. I'm sure this camera will shine with better quality lenses. EVF is better than expected and very usable.
