The Lumix DMC-LX7 Digital Camera (White) by Panasonic brings with it a fully redesigned lens, sensor and image processor for fast performance and gorgeous picture quality.  Starting with the newly developed 24mm Leica DC Vario-Summilux lens, we will see why the LX7 is a cut above the rest in terms of high quality optics in a point and shoot. The LX7's lens is a 3.8x optical zoom lens with a focal length equivalency of 24-90mm. That is a great standard zoom for all your day-to-day shooting but what makes the lens special is its f/1.4 aperture at the wide angle end and f/2.3 at the telephoto end. These are apertures in line with the best available SLR lenses and will provide you with enough light entering your camera to use high shutter speeds and capture sharp images with beautiful gradations even in low light settings.

The LX7 has also adopted a new larger (1/1.7") 10.1MP MOS sensor with an improved S/N (signal-to-noise) ratio that will result in high resolution images with outstanding clarity and rich gradation, even in high contrast situations. The Venus Engine image processor has also been improved, now featuring Intelligent NR (Noise Reduction) which optimizes the NR process by separating parts of the image. It will detect the bright part of an image and localize the noise reduction where it is needed most.  Also, the processor integrates a high speed digital signal to improve continuous shooting rates to 11 frames per second with mechanical shutter and 5 fps in continuous Auto Focus.

The LCD display on the LX7 is a full 3.0" and houses 920,000 dots. Sharpness is ensured, as is wide angle viewing, and with its Intelligent mode, the LCD will automatically adjust its brightness based on the exterior lighting conditions.

The Lumix LX7 also records Full HD Video with a dedicated one-touch button. In addition to shooting video in two separate formats (MPEG-4/H.264 and MP4), the LX7 records sound with Dolby Digital Stereo Creator. This high quality stereo microphone system offers zoom noise reduction and Auto Wind Cut to reduce background noise. Creative functions in the video mode let you adjust shutter speed and aperture to create special effects or simply, to improve your home videos.

Creative and assistive controls are one reason the Panasonic LX series are such great cameras and the LX7 is no different. Sixteen in-camera filters offer a range of creative options including Radial and Smooth Defocus and a new Time Lapse Shot function allows for beautiful series of flowers blooming, cities passing into night or clouds rolling by. Also, the LX7 has a been equipped with an aperture ring, focus lever and rear dial for further image control and Photo Style modes will enhance your images when shooting specific types of scenes and iA (Intelligent Auto) and iA Plus will give you that little bit of help to capture tricky images (Intelligent HDR) or not so tricky (Face Detection). Of course, the Lumix LX7 has complete manual control for advanced shooters to fine tune their shots to be exactly as wanted.

Being a camera that even the pros appreciate means that the LX7 comes with a full line of accessories to improve your shooting in any situation. The camera's hot-shoe allows for the attachment of advanced accessories such as the tilt-shift Live View Finder.  With accessories such as this, its improved sensor, fast lens and host of creative controls, there is very little that the Lumix LX7 cannot perform.

Optics
The lens is where it all begins with the LX7! With 11 elements, including 9 aspherical surfaces and a dual-sided aspherical ED lens (first for a Lumix), this Leica DC Vario-Summilux lens produces exquisite high resolution images with minimal distortion and a soft-focused background. Nano Surface coating cuts down on reflection as light passes through the lens and its 24mm wide angle offers a huge viewing angle with little distortion. The f/1.4 aperture in wide angle and f/2.3 at telephoto mean that fast shutter speeds are possible even in low light.
Sensor
The Lumix LX7 adopts a new 1/1.7-inch 10.1MP MOS Sensor that features an improved S/N ratio by 1.5 dB compared with its predecessor, which results in high resolution images with stunning clarity in high sensitivity recording and also in low ISO, reproducing rich gradation with wide dynamic range even when the situation is highly contrasted.
Image Processor
The Venus Engine keeps resolution high by optimizing the noise-reduction process. Bright areas in each image are identified and a multi-step NR process is applied to keep even high contrast images smooth. High speed digital signal output means that continuous shooting speeds have improved up to 11 frames per second in full 10MP resolution.
Video
Full HD 1080 60p video recording with Dolby Stereo audio recording with creative video modes to control your images as you see fit.
Intelligent Auto
iA and iA Plus modes allow you to put the more difficult shots into the hands of a master - your LX7 camera. Optical Image Stabilization keeps your images blur-free, AF-Tracking lets you hold focus on moving subjects, Face Recognition perfects your portraits and Motion Deblur lets you adjust the nicely out-of-focus backgrounds. In addition, Intelligent HDR will help you create great shots even when the light and shadows are not cooperating and Intelligent Handheld Night Shot will give you blur-free night shots without flash.
Creative Options and Full Manual Control
Be able to go both ways. In-camera filters and creative options such as Soft Focus, Dynamic Monochrome, Toy Effect and the new Radial Defocus allow you to create stunning images without taking them to your computer first and full manual control allows you to shoot like a pro by controlling the camera to work your own personal magic.
Time Lapse Shot Function
Time Lapse Shot Function is a nice addition the LX7, allowing you to easily create time lapse images of clouds passing, flowers blooming or cities moving. Get creative and try it on your friends changing facial expressions.
Multiple Optional Accessories
The available accessories for the LX7 will bring your shooting to another level and keep your camera functional for years to come. An external flash, an external view finder and multiple filters are all available to turn your camera into a complete system.

I've owned the LX5 and now the LX7. Don't give this camera a second thought. The Leica lens is crisp clear and the images this baby produces are second to none. The camera is small and very light, easy to take anywhere without feeling like you're lugging around a brick. I am an artist and a professional photographer and I find myself using this camera on a daily basis for absolutely everything apart from actual client work or my own artwork. Shoot in RAW and learn to explore the full potential of this tiny camera. You will not regret this purchase, I guarantee it.

One detail to remember is that it is not perfect in low light. Anything about 400 ISO will produce color noise that you might not be comfortable with but it is easily reduced when you shoot in RAW. Learn to use your equipment and know its limits and you will find yourself producing beautiful work.

I thought I'd upgrade from my LX5, but it wasn't worth the change. I have returned the LX7. In low light, there's too much chromo-luminance noise, the photos look "blotchy". The shutter lag is quite long, as well. The LX7 is not improved from the last model.I didn't think the extra f-stop on the LX7 made any difference, since the chip still had the same limitations as my LX5. Which is too much low light noise, and blotchy grain. In addition, Panasonic deicided to change the shoe-mounted digital viewfinder, from their last model. So everyone who paid a couple of [$] for that device. for their LX5, discovered it didn't work on the LX7. (thanks Panasonic, but to me, it would be like changing lens mounts, after you've sold me a bunch of lenses)There's no extension tube, and 18mm lens option, on the new model, something quite usefull on the LX5, so the new camera actually gave me less of an option than I had with their last model. I've had a long run with Lumix cameras, it's time for a change. I returned the LX7. I now use the Sony Cybershot RX100, for high quality "small" camera situations.

Comments about Lumix DMC-LX7 Digital Camera (Black):

Toting a big D-SLR around is not always convenient nor needed and this Lumix DMC-LX7 is just about perfect to fill the gap. I've just begun scratching the surface with regards using the camera but so far I'm delighted with the quality and the results and small enough to tuck into a pocket or bag.

Comments about Lumix DMC-LX7 Digital Camera (Black):

I own a Fuji XT-1 with a couple lenses and I am very happy with the equipment, especially after living with Rolleiflexes, Hasselblads, Leicas and Nikons for more than 50 years. The Fuji quality is outstanding and it provides plenty of freedom to create. However, even with a small camera bag, it still feels like one is carrying too much equipment for a day in the streets (you feel it on your shoulder also after a long walk or a hike). Years ago, I had a Lumix LX-3 and still enjoy looking at most of the photos made with that camera. The camera is long gone. Just recently, after considering many options in the "pocketable" market, I decided to purchase a camera that has been available for the past two years, not one that just came to market: the Lumix LX-7. I also purchased the LVF-2 (viewfinder) and an additional battery from B&H. Great quality, easy to maneuver, great software, but must of all, great glass. It's not as quick as other recent products but the zoom range is good, especially the 24mm. If you are looking to photograph action sports, this is not the camera for you.Ordering through B&H was a quick and easy and I highly recommend using them.

Comments about Lumix DMC-LX7 Digital Camera (Black):

I have a full size DSLR kit and needed a more accessible camera to keep in my bag at all times. My problem with finding a smaller camera was that they are designed as point-and-shoot devices and I wanted actual real camera features that would allow manual adjustments. Top on my wish list was a good lens with a very fast aperture; second need was to make slow-mo video along with good HD. This camera satisfies/exceeds all of my core needs. The quality of the picture is amazing and it is the perfect size camera - to get pro results without all of my pro camera gear!

If you take video or playback shots often, I advise purchasing a 2nd battery. The charger is awesome as it has no cables, just plugs into the outlet. The ND and focus tuning features are great, however it would be easier to work if they didn't share the same button and rocker. The one issue I have had, and still working on a satisfactory procedure, is that the flash won't work in a number of modes and you have to know how to change your preferred mode into something close enough so that you can operate a fill flash. I'm not ready to call it a flaw yet, but I figured enabling the force flash would allow this. I do love this camera. And it arrived on my doorstep in two days with an SDHC memory card! I am looking into adding a viewfinder attachment to the LCD screen so that I don't have to have my reading glasses on hand.

Comments about Lumix DMC-LX7 Digital Camera (Black):

I use this camera when carrying a full sized DSLR is not practical. The image and HD video quality is good. It has full manual controls and shoots in RAW format so it's a step above a cheap "point and shoot" camera.I bought this camera because the control wheel on the back of my three year old Lumix LX5 stopped working, everything else is fine. The cost to repair the LX5, probably close to $, I figured it was better to buy a new camera. I do not believe the faulty control wheel is a common problem.

Comments about Lumix DMC-LX7 Digital Camera (Black):

When choosing the LX7, I had two main interests: full manual controls and easy portability. Traveling with a DSLR has proven to be annoying as a tourist. The Lumix is small enough and light enough to head out with for the day, though not so much so that it fits easily in my pocket.

Being fairly new to manual settings, I've found the UI to be fairly intuitive and the menus mostly easy to navigate. The focus is slower than I'd have imagined and it's a bit cumbersome to change the focal point. Maybe it takes time to get used to, but I could see myself missing a shot trying to get the focus right.

Otherwise, I'm generally impressed. It's quite easy to get professional looking photos using the Aperture priority setting. Though, I haven't been as successful with the Shutter priority. In the way that I use it, it's a powerful toy with capabilities far beyond my own.

Comments about Lumix DMC-LX7 Digital Camera (Black):

I like the LX7 because it produces fewer clipped highlights than any of it's competitors including the Canon s120 or the Sony RX100-2 - so pictures of people seem more natural to me.

The Sony has better specs due to its larger sensor and can make bigger prints…but just looking at the pictures on a computer or sharing snaps the LX7 wins. I cannot comment on the movie capabilities.

The lens does not retract all the way like the others but you get used to the lens cap. The filter holder gizmo does a nice job. The electronic viewfinder is excellent and a must have for shooting outdoors in bright light. The lens is superior. I like the 24-90 equiv. zoom range. Difference between a 24mm equiv. and a 28mm equiv. is significant.

I normally shoot with a full frame DSLR and use the LX7 when I am not fully geared. Often I take a test image with the LX7, then come back with my d800 or Df and find it hard to pick a favorite for computer viewing or web display.

P - Program mode or iA - Intelligent Automatic mode - with 11 frames per second selected is perfect for shooting things like festivals, subway cars, elevators, demonstrations or department store interiors while moving rapidly and not being noticed. I never go anywhere without my LX7.

The iA mode - intelligent automatic - not sure how that is different from the P mode except it picks the focus mode and can invoke face recognition for you. Both these "leave it the camera" modes nail exposure. This model out performs and out handles the prior versions in many small ways that add up.

Comments about Lumix DMC-LX7 Digital Camera (Black):

I am having to travel much more for my job recently. This travel takes me to scenic areas that are new to me. Since I'm flying and trying to pack light, I don't want to haul around my 5DII kit. I considered micro 4/3, but to get the performance of this lens, especially the large aperture, I would have had to spend much more than I wanted.I settled on the LX7 and I'm very happy with my decision. The zoom range is just right, I love the 24mm wide angle compared to 28 or 35mm. The camera comes to life quickly and is very responsive. The images are very sharp and crisp and the auto white balance is very accurate. I love that I can shoot RAW and refine the images in Lightroom. When I opened the box, I was surprised at how small the LX7 is. It's just the size I was looking for. My big hands have no problems with the controls. Speaking of controls, I can shoot in a semi-automatic mode (I normally shoot AV), but still have the ability to completely control exposure, focus, etc. I will use it primarily as a still camera, but the video quality is very good. I've viewed video from it on my 10' home theater screen and it looks amazingly good.I have two small quibbles. I tried the panorama mode and it works fine sometimes, but other times it has problems with the background if it is very busy. I consider the feature a bonus, so it's no big deal. Also, when working on an image on Photoshop, I noticed a little more noise @ISO 200 in the dark areas of the photo than I was expecting. I have to put it in perspective, since I'm used to looking at Canon 5DII files. At normal size the noise isn't a problem and it cleaned up nicely with NIK's Dfine noise reduction software. This is a great little camera that's a welcome addition to my equipment list. It will serve the same purpose that my treasured Leica M3 served back in the film days - small, unobtrusive camera just right for traveling and everyday use. Finally, B&H service is excellent. The camera and accessories shipped the same day I ordered and arrived as promised. The items were packed well and arrived undamaged.

I'm a micro 4/3 shooter and was considering the LUMIX 12-35mm/F2.8 for my GH2 but I also wanted a smaller camera for those times when I just needed a casual camera for quality snapshots and video. My LX7 gives me more in terms of relative focal lenght plus an even faster lens, F1.4, for low light situations. For my level and style of photoghraphy the price savings of this camera vs that lens allows more money for other accessories without much lose of quality and with most of the features of my GH2 plus great macro capability.

I shoot a DSLR as my work camera but wanted a small 2nd camera to carry when not taking the bigger bag. With the Lumix LX7 You have more control than with a simple point & shoot vacation camera. You can still shoot it auto and be happy with that; but it shines for me in that it has a very fast lens and options for manual settings. And the video looks great. It has the ability to shoot 120 fps (at 720 size). if you search youtube you'll see that the 120 slow mo looks pretty darn good. There are plenty of cameras that have more pixel count but the fast 1.4 lens makes up for a lot and how big do you really intend to enlarge a print? I can't give it 5 stars for several reasons. The operation menu could be simplified; I don't know why they include all those "special effect" settings. They should concentrate on what they can leave off of these small semi-pro cameras. The camera has a manual F-stop ring which is cool, but it also has some other settings next to the ring that I keep accidentally bumping and changing: aspect ratio and settings for manual/auto/cu focus. So you need to remember to check those settings each time before shooting. I like to have a viewfinder so I bought the Panasonic Digital Viewfinder for this camera. Kind of pricey but I recommend it for use in bright sunlight. But the view screen is no worse than other cameras this size. With the added viewfinder it almost feels like a little Leica m series. It has a little popup flash, but you have this fast lens so don't use it unless you have to.

Comments about Lumix DMC-LX7 Digital Camera (Black):

I'm a professional photographer and I was looking for a compact light camera BUT with great optic, shooting RAW, good resolution, a decent zoom range, etc.
A camera that let me, if needed, using my files for professional use without carrying all the heavy stuff that I used to, during long vacation trips, like for example a month in Eastern Europe.
Now I found it!! when I developed my raw files into Capture One Pro 7 the details that I can recover from shadows are amazing, great color rendition, and in general very good files with enough resolution to even send to a client or make an excellent print as large as 11x14 or even larger without compromise the quality.
the back screen is very good and large enough and all the options that it has are great, even I don't use it, but when my wife or other people are using the camera, is great to have it all this nice options.
Maybe the only downside that I could mention is, that is too light!! so you have to have special attention to be very steady in order to not to move it.
By the way the panorama and HDR options works great and the video is HD with stereo sound.
This little gem with just one SM card of 128 GB it's all you need to enjoy your trip, get great shots and not break your bones.
It's a very welcome Panasonic chip camera, knowing that you actually had a Leica!
I upload a sample picture taken under some tricky conditions, very strong light outside and shadows at the interior, to test the flash and the skin tone rendition. The subject is close to a wall, so I want to avoid the typical strong shadow that I hate that you get using a camera flash. I'm very pleased with the results. I shoot in RAW and I process using Capture One Pro 7 and I had have to correct the saturation of the skin locally, but even without any local correction the result was very good, but as a pro, I've always have the temptation to make little corrections.
