The AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon Mount by Tokina is an ultra-wide angle autofocus zoom lens with a fast constant f/2.8 maximum aperture. The AT-X 116 PRO DX-II lens is designed for digital cameras with APS-C-size CMOS or CCD sensors. Its angle of view ranges from 104-84° and it can focus as close as 11.8". Nine diaphragm blades help to produce soft out-of-focus backgrounds while two Super-Low Dispersion glass elements and two aspheric elements help to achieve excellent contrast, sharpness and minimal chromatic aberration. As an update to their AT-X 116 PRO DX, Tokina has improved the multi-layer coatings to minimize light reflection and improve optical performance. This updated PRO DX-II also has an internal silent focusing motor that allows the lens to utilize autofocus on Nikon cameras that do not have an AF drive gear and motor.

Tokina's One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows the photographer to switch between autofocus and manual focus with a simple push of the focus ring. Snapping it forward into autofocus and back into manual focus is all that needs be done, there's no need to adjust the AF/MF switch on the camera body.

A constant f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light situations and also aids in creating a shallow depth of field.
An internal silent focusing motor allows the lens to use autofocus on Nikon bodies that do not have an AF drive gear and motor.
Two Super-Low Dispersion glass elements and two aspheric elements, as well as improved multi-coating, achieve excellent sharpness and contrast and reduce aberrations.
The One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism offers a simple switch from manual focus to autofocus and back again. The focus ring snaps forward for AF and back for MF. It's operable with one hand and eliminates the need to switch from AF to MF on the camera body.

I purchased the first version of this lens from B&H in January. While it was still under the return period the version ii was announced.I returned the original and waited "patiently" for the ii.It took a while but when it was finally announced I think that I was probably one of the first to place an order.I did order it early in the morning on the announced sale day. There was absolutely nothing that I could find wrong with the original but the addition of a motor will come in handy for my back-up D40.I usually take my pictures at night and this lens performs beyond my expectations I'll attach a couple of pics that I have taken with this lens. Bear in mind that I am an amature photographer so the image quality would probably be better in more capable hands

I purchased the newer Tokina 11-16 mm f/2.8 because I was looking for an DX alternative to my Nikkor AF-S 14-24 mm f/2.8 for such occasions where I want to travel lighter or need to attach a filter. It is possible that I expected too much because of the mostly positive reviews I read, and/or that I was too critical in my evaluation of this lens because it is not a Nikon product. Either way, after two exchanges I am still not entirely happy with my third sample but I decided to keep it because it works well for me for landscape and travel photography, which is what I use it for. Also, I know what I've got but don't know what I'll get if I exchange it a third time because every new sample I have had was different from the previous one except for the fact that they all were sharpest at f/5.6-f/9.0 at any focal length.

The first sample was what I would describe as the most "balanced" of the three in terms of resolution. Center sharpness was usable at f/2.8. Border sharpness was not as good as center sharpness at all focal lengths, and very disappointing at 11 mm, especially at f/2.8. The resolution was generally best at f/4 - f/8, particularly at 16 mm. The second sample lacked center sharpness at all apertures and focal lengths, which led me to believe there may have been a focusing problem. My third sample is not usable wide open at any focal length. However, resolution increases remarkably at 4.0, and from f/5.6 - f/11 the lens displays very good to excellent sharpness across the frame at all focal lengths. I am also very pleased with the color rendition.

Even though I am quite satisfied with my lens when I use it in the f/5.6 to f/11 aperture range, I can only give it a 3-star rating because of its underperformance at f/2.8 and - for this product in general - the sample variations.

Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon Mount:

I was torn between this an the Nikon 10-24mm f/3.5 for my Nikon d5300... I've only been using this lens for a few weeks, but I am glad I made this choice so far. I was previously using a Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5, and the extra width has given me a whole new perspective. I also appreciate the nearly one full stop lower in my photos...especially since I really like night photos. Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase. The cool thing is that this lens will also work on a Full Frame (at 16mm only)... but at least it works on a full frame! pretty cool!

The f/2.8 of this lens means I get a lot of light and a fast shutter. This lens has filled a spot in my lineup and while I've only had it a few weeks, its become my new favorite go-to for most anything. Its great for macro pictures as well as up close shooting.

I don't think that I would use this indoors without a tripod or a high ISO setting.

Bought this lens primarily for landscape photography after much research. It was between this and Nikon's 10-24mm. I went with Tokina because of the fixed aperture. I wasn't fully sure of what type of landscapes I would ultimately be shooting, but wanted the fixed, wide aperture for low light situations. Haven't tried it out in the field too much, but my test shots have been sharp and the color is bright. I am very happy with my purchase and looking forward to using it going forward. Haven't had any problems with the lens cap or filters being screwed onto the end of the lens. Cap goes on and off easily and my uv filter went on with no problem.

Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon Mount:

                Some background first:
I purchased my first dslr (Nikon D7000) a couple months ago. I've spent a lot of time going over the settings and experimenting with the exposure triangle in manual mode. I've been borrowing my girlfriend's Nikkor 18-200mm which has been my main lens so far.

                The lens:
The Tokina 11-16mm was my first big lens purchase. I am extremely pleased so far. I did a lot of research on different wide angle lenses and believe this is one of the best wide angles for the price. I mentioned to my girlfriend's dad (who has been in photography for a long time) that I was thinking of getting this lens and he said it would be a great investment, which really solidified my decision to purchase it. I've shot a few landscapes with it already and love the outcome of them. I've also tried a few night photos and so far so good. I have had no issues with the lens working with my D7000. I had read about some issues with the D7000 and this specific lens, but it seems like they were all fixed before the second version of the Tokina 11-16 was released. Please note, the DX-II is the second version of the lens. I actually didn't realize this right away so make sure you buy the second version (or first if that floats your boat).

I've attached a a photo I've taken with the lens. Like I said, I'm really new to photography (and post processing) so if you notice any issues it was probably my errors. This lens has been great in my opinion. My goal is to get a water housing and use this lens in the ocean. I think it would be perfect for water shots.

                B&H Service:
I would like to mention this was my first purchase from B&H and I am definitely going to use them in the future for my photo needs. I noticed the price dropped a couple of days after I purchased the lens online. I called customer service and they refunded me the difference without question. Shipping was fast and the pricing was very affordable (actually cheaper than the big online companies).

Just started taking pics in the desert. Produces images that put you right in the subject matter. It seems very sturdy. I'm not sure if the automatic functions work as dependably as my Nikon lenses on my Nikon camera but this could be user error.

I like the way this lens is build, strong little plastic. And best it's less than 1/2 of Nikon's 10-14 mm.

This is my first wide angle lens and it is great. Only had it less then one month but so far it is great. The price for it vs Nikon lens is outstanding. Takes great pictures. So much fun having the wide angle. Looking forward to close up holiday photos.

Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon Mount:

I received this lens about 2 weeks ago after having researched it online for a couple of months and looked at literally hundreds of reviews. Mine is the Nikon mount version. Although it is a bit bulky and heavy the build quality seems exceptional. I also own the Nikon 10.5mm fisheye that I love, but it now seems surplus to my needs so am considering selling it off since the 11-16mm is so close, but without the vertical distortion. Still, I think it will be hard to part with...The push/pull feature for changing from auto to manual focus is actually very nice once one gets used to it. No messing around with switches on the side of the lens barrel. My only concern, and this is very minor, is compatibility with future Nikon camera body models since it is a "3rd party" lens. Then again, I don't know how long it will be before I upgrade to a newer body since I'm so happy with what I have. I even put a Nikon 77mm lens cap on the front, looks good that way!I look forward to some serious night photography with this lens paired with my D90. I also will use it on my infrared converted old D50.Images so far are tack sharp and low light f/2.8 makes it a real winner. No complaints whatsoever!I plan on a Milky Way session with this lens when the time and place are right, more than likely near Lake Tahoe where it gets nice and dark at night.

Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon Mount:

I bought this lens to replace my old (heavily used and beaten up) version 1 of this same lens. I've always loved Tokina's glass but they went above and beyond with the autofocus motor on this version. It's so quiet I sometimes purposefully blur then re-autofocus my shot just to make sure it's actually working. It is, and it's really quiet about it.The reason I'm giving this 4 stars and not 5 is due to the focus clutch ring. This time around it seems much looser and more cheaply made than it's predecessor. The lens itself feels amazing but that one ring is just a little too Playskool feeling for my taste. Beef it back up, Tokina!
