The 4TB 2big NAS Server from LaCie provides a fast, secure and flexible network storage RAID solution. Since the requirements differ among all users, the 2big NAS provides a choice between faster transfer rates or file mirroring with a simple flip of a switch. For programs demanding high-speed, such as video editing or graphics, you can choose RAID 0 (fast). If data backup is important, RAID 1 (safe) will keep a copy of each file on the 2big NAS's two disks. RAID technology offers superior data protection for greater integrity and validation than standard hard disk storage. With both an eSATA and a USB 2.0 interface, you'll experience enhanced transfer rates to complement any RAID level that is chosen.

The 2big NAS provides blazing fast read speeds of up to 100 MB/s and write speeds of up to 75 MB/s. It features a hard drive storage space of 8 TB. Authorized users can take full advantage of these speeds and storage space through the local network or by remote access using LaCie MyNAS, a web-based interface. A free iOS app with the same name is also available for iPhone and iPad users. The NAS is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux systems along with their respective client backup software (Time Machine, Windows Backup and more). This allows users to connect to the 2big NAS independent of the operating system.

RAID Security and Scalability
RAID 1 mode provides hardware-level data protection and secures important files from disk failure. If a single disk fails, it can be replaced without switching off the 2big NAS, thanks to its hot-swappable design.
Automated NAS Backup
The Dashboard allows replication of the contents of the 2big Server onto an attached USB/eSATA hard drive and vice-versa. You can create automatic backup jobs tailored to each of the attached devices. Backups can also be configured to start automatically each time a USB hard drive is connected to the 2big Server. The NAS can also be used to back up another NAS, whether it's on the local network or remotely located (NAS must be rsync-compatible; for LaCie NAS, both client and server should have NAS OS 2.2 or later.) Furthermore, a nightly backup of the NAS can be configured onto a backup server in a completely different building.
Faster Internal File Sharing
The 2big NAS boosts your business productivity with up to 100 MB/s read and 75 MB/s write speeds. The 2big NAS is powered by a 2 GHz ARM processor and the highly efficient Ext4 file system. This combination optimizes file transfers between the users. Everyone on the network can share files quickly and easily, whether they are on a Windows, Mac or a Linux platform. Folders within the network can be defined as private or public. For private folders, you'll be able to closely control access by setting user or group-level permissions.
Mobile Productivity
LaCie MyNAS delivers the simplest setup in the industry. Just name the network storage without leaving the Dashboard and it's accessible from anywhere. All you need is an Internet connection. From within a browser, authorized users can download, manage and upload files remotely. They can also stream image and audio files. A free iPhone/iPad app gives you a convenient and instant access to all the files and storage capacity on your phone or tablet.
Seamless Network Integration
The NAS is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux. This makes it a viable solution for an entire office, even if your sales department uses PCs and the graphic design team uses Macs. Support for Active Directory feature allows import of existing users and groups with a simple click of a mouse.
Easy Setup
The 2big NAS is very easy to set up. A NAS novice will also be able to set up and run it in just 10 minutes. It is powered by the LaCie NAS OS 2. The server's user-friendly and web-based interface, the Dashboard, provides easy access to powerful features. Its setup wizards with presets make advanced tasks such as RAID management, user authorization and NAS-to-NAS backups much more manageable.
Complete Computer Backup Solution
The 2big NAS comes with everything required to back up office computers. It comes with three client licenses for Genie Backup Manager Pro for Windows and three licenses for Intego Backup Manager Pro for Mac. (Additional licenses can be purchased online.) You can install the included software on computers to be backed up or simply use the Time Machine or Windows 7 Backup. Data can be restored in seconds in case you accidentally delete an important file or if the hard drive fails.
Energy Efficient
The 2big NAS helps to reduce power consumption by controlling its energy usage. In eco mode, it uses one-tenth of the energy of its NAS predecessors without reducing user access to the stored data. The shut down and restart times can also be scheduled for the 2big NAS. It also supports wake on LAN protocol, so if the NAS is asleep and using zero electricity, you can easily wake it up from your computer remotely without being physically next to the 2big NAS.
iSCSI Target
You can set up an iSCSI share of the 2big NAS and mount it as a local share on the computer. An iSCSI connection provides better performance and flexibility for professional applications such as backup or virtualization.
Dual-Cooling for Long-Term Reliability
The 2big NAS has an advanced dual cooling system that ensures long-term reliability and prevents overheating. Its solid aluminum casing provides 60% more surface area, which diverts and dissipates heat efficiently. In addition, its thermo-regulated fan turns on and off according to the internal temperature. It cools the components and also reduces the electricity usage.
Centralized Printing
Centralize the printing process by connecting a compatible printer to the USB 2.0 port of the 2big NAS. It allows any authorized user to print from any computer on the network.

Comments about LaCie 4TB 2big NAS Server:

First one I was shipped was bad and verified by lacie. Second one I bought worked but then I got into the meat of the device. First off, the NAS kept dropping off my network even though I set the power settings to be always on. The unit would stay powered but the oS on the device or the network card kept failing. Kind of hard to use it when it keeps disappearing and they only thing that seemed to bring it back was restarting the nas.

Then I actually got some files loaded. Then I decided to delete some. BEware it does not like to delete files. I used the mac files system to try and delete files and the provided lacie assistant. Impossible to remove them. The only way to delete a bunch of files is to wipe out your whole share. You might as well buy something else. Much thanks to B&H for giving me zero hassle on exchanging these units.

Comments about LaCie 4TB 2big NAS Server:

We needed a device to store Word documents and PDF's that could be accessible from all four computers we have in the office. This NAS was the perfect fit.

While connecting it over the local network is really easy (The LaCie Network Assistant is actually really good), getting it accessible from out of the office was a little trickier since our cable modem (supplied by Comcast Business Class) had a built in firewall in it. After being on the phone numerous times with Comcast, I realized that they were the problem. We ended up purchasing a stand-alone modem which solved the problem and now we can access the NAS through the LaCie "mynas" website and through FTP/SFTP (just make sure you forward the ports correctly on your router). Every night we have it set up so that it backs up to another LaCie 2big NAS outside of the office and it has been working without any glitches. We were also able to hook up our networked copier/printer/scanner to scan directly to the NAS via FTP.

As far as the speed goes, we couldn't be happier. Everyone in the office is able to use the drive at the same time and save to the drive just as they would when they would save locally on the computer in the My Documents folder. Most of the employees in the office have a little trouble with computers, but they were able to adopt to the NAS.

As far as the iPad/iPhone app goes, make sure that you activate the "mynas" remote connection before attempting to log in. Once you do that, the app is very easy to use.

Overall it is a great device! It is really nice that in the event of a drive failure you can keep working using the other RAID disk and then pop in a new drive to keep the Raid 1 mirror going.

My only complaint is that the "mynas" website uses java to upload files. It works fine for now, but Apple has been disabling java over the past few months due to security threats so we will have to stay on top of the updates.

Just a note: I used a Mac running OSX 10.8.3 to set up the NAS and the employees use two older Macs running OSX 10.6.8, and two Windows 7 desktops (those are mostly used) with the NAS.
