I'm a photographer and growing videographer - needed some more space to play with. Also wanted a place to set up another Time Machine backup (Mac user). This drive fit the bill. 3TB drive, smaller than a VHS tape. USB 3.0 lets it xfer data like a boss.

As soon as I got it, I partitioned into two parts, 1T and 2TB. Then set one as the Time Machine backup drive. Works flawlessly in the background.

Came with a 2 year warranty.

Feels like a solid brick of aluminum, which I like. Plasticky drives have a place in my workflow, but not right on my desktop. This fits in. One thoughtful touch: The blue LED status light is in the back and not very bright.... keeps my room from looking like a space station at night. SOme other drives have lights that are way too bright.

No complaints so far... and the price was excellent.

Another lovely product from Lacie. I have a few quibbles, however. My product came without an instruction booklet, but I was able to get it set up. When first connected, I could not determine if the unit was powered up; turns out it has a rather dim power lamp located on the top rear of the unit. Lacking setup instructions, I was able to locate a power switch (pushbutton) on the back panel. It was barely detectable as a "lump" on the back, not the best location, and hard to activate, taking a rather serious push. Plus, in conjunction with the previously mentioned dim power lamp, makes turnon/shutoff iffy.

When the unit was powered up, I could not get the setup program to run. It would start, but nothing else would happen; Windows7 task manager did not show it as a running program , but did show it as a process. I was seeing CPU activity, but after several minutes of inactivity otherwise, I terminated the process and tried again, with the same results. The Lacie website suggested that the drive had been corrupted somehow and walked me through the steps of re-partitioning and formatting the drive using Windows7's tools. My first attempt at this failed in the last step, where Windows could or would not format the drive either quick or full. I was trying to format it as NTFS. The Lacie site said that if this should happen, the drive was probably bad. I opened a ticket on it with Lacie, rebooted the computer, whereupon the drive showed up in Windows just fine with one active NTFS partition of the entire drive, which was what I wanted.

The drive has been working fine since then, but it's only been about 2 weeks, and I am reluctant to move any files to it. So far I've just been making copies of large video files and it has so far worked OK on this computer and another laptop also running Windows7 with good transfer speeds.

The power brick/lump will require a small extension cord to plug into a powerstrip due to its size. The unit does come with its own USB3 cable, although I am not fond of the connector used that plugs into the drive (seems rather fussy) although it was probably chosen so as to keep the overall size of the unit as small as possible...which it certainly is.

What can I say the price was right. And of course this guy is very fast. There's no lag here. Using it in conjunction with the new Mac Pro. It's great for editing and when you just don't have the space to do it on the computer itself. Great tool and great travel companion.

Comments about LaCie Minimus USB 3.0 (3TB):

Hard drive was easy to set up through disk utility on my mac, didn't bother with the LaCie software. Bought two of these for archiving old projects and just have everything duplicated from the first to the second. Very sleek and small design, smaller than three stacked blu-rays. Haven't had them long enough to comment on their longevity, but LaCie has generally been reliable for me. They're quiet and fast, too. 2.5TB copied in about 4.5 hours over USB3.

Works as advertised. Small footprint, quiet, USB3 on iMac gives me the advertised 5gb/min transfer rate. I use it for video backup. Of course, I'm more interested to see how it works a year or two from now - all hard drives work the first month! That being said I have many LaCie hard drives and they've treated me well. I also really like the Intego backup software that is included for free with the drive.

Comments about LaCie Minimus USB 3.0 (3TB):

Recently I purchased a LaCie Minimus USB 3.0 (3TB) drive from B&H for my iMac. Never heard of LaCie technology prior to this purchase, I was leary. The LaCie is quiet, this was important because I use the iMac in a studio for audio recording and editing.
So far I have learned to leave the LaCie off until the Mac is fully booted; I have had the iMac freeze during boot up when the drive is powered up first. Using Apple Time Machine, the LaCie has locked-up the Mac only once. The drive is fast, my Mac Time Machine backs up daily, and transparently. I am pleased with the quality of technology in the LaCie external drive. My only complaint is the length of USB cable., 90cm is just not long enough for me to place the drive where I wanted it.

A lot of space, great for storing photos and videos. The drive runs very quietly, but it would time out and thus trigger "Improperly Ejected" message in my iMac all the time. The drive runs slow when it is about half full.

Comments about LaCie Minimus USB 3.0 (3TB):

The operating system requirements are getting so "new" that you may need to format on a new computer. That's the only way I could use one of these, since I have a 1st generation Mac Pro. Would be better if they provided software for a wider variety of systems.
